🔷 ABOUT US 🔷
We're a DIY family building our "forever homestead" from 15 acres of raw undeveloped land in Tennessee. All of our content is family friendly and safe for everyone to enjoy.
In today's video we take a deep dive into our single wide mobile home's energy usage and power consumption. We purchased an Emporia Gen 2 Vue whole house energy monitor to track our home's electrical usage and pinpoint areas to reduce our energy bill. This will help us determine our home's energy usage, identify inefficient appliances or circuits, and find ways to lower our monthly power bill to save on energy costs. Let's go!

That Lectric bill usually hits you right in the family Joules, but I can see you have put in Amp-le time researching this topic. It's Shock-ing how much Lectricity folks use. Watt is going on here? I know, it Hertz alot while you Ion out all the details. Just try to stay calm and don't blow a Fuse. I have faith in you. I know you Conduit.

Some electric companies charge higher rates during the day. Cheaper rates at night and weekends. Ours is higher 2pm to 7pm Monday threw Friday. Water heaters are a big energy usage. We shut off the water heater mid morning and turn it back on later afternoon. Our water heater keeps hot water for daily usage without running. And only needs to run for shower times. It will run longer but only a couple times Not on and off during the day and night. So I love the thought of that kind of control and knowledge Thank You for sharing.

If the weather is good and you don't already do this, try hanging out your laundry on a clothes line and cut back using a clothes dryer. If they have non-peak rates that are lower from your power company, consider using the washing machine during that time, some washing machines have timers. Perhaps overtime, invest in insulation so when you do need it to be cool or warm, you don't need to run the mini-split as often, as the insulation will help with this.

In the summer we would hang out our clothes, using the air conditioner used enough electricity and that saved a lot of energy to go to cooling the house, I wished I had a clothes line now...mama had a wonderful one, Daddy made her lines by sinking cross ties in the ground with a T across the top, which made her 4 lines to hang clothes on, made of a fairly thick wire, when the weather got warm we would go out there a clean the wire so it wouldn't dirty the clothes....I like the way air dry clothes smell.

WHAT???? No bloopers????? Well, that was terrific, Sam and Angela! I think you can rest easy in the fact that you're gonna be helping lots and lots of us who buy this unit, install it, and then actually KNOW what's going on with our consumption. Plus, it will put us in a mindset of saving energy. Because the more we save, the more energy there is that can be used by other things and people. Well done!

nice. One suggestion in the future, get velcro ties instead of zip ties, it makes it easier to adjust your wiring in the future if you say one of those probes burnt out or you wanted to add more or whatever Edit. On the heating issue. I know its an expense, but check out Lumnah Acres and Northern Seclusion, they have switched to outdoor wood boilers. And I have read that depending on your local regulations, in most states landscape companies have to pay to dispose of trees they cut down now. Finding some local landscapers who will just drop off the cut down trees on your land and you can use them for firewood could be a big savings.

Great video, A little tip/trick when working on cable management. When adding zip ties, place your first tie and tighten. Now place your second zip tie right next to the first and make sure the zip tie is positioned or oriented exactly like the first and snug it up but not so tight that it won't move. Now you can rotate the second tie back and forth while sliding away from the first, you may need to move wires around a bit. You will notice that the wires will be neatly organized as you slide your tie away from the original. The wires or cables will remain in the same orientation as you do this. Rinse and repeat until you are at the end of your run.

The improvements you have done to your home have cut your A/C requirements by at least 50% new windows/doors that are tight and new insulation everywhere along with the roof-over have buttoned up that 1988 Palm Harbor Single Wide pretty well. Still nice to know where the power use is though. I agree that a timer on the water heater and putting blanket wrapper on it can save real money over the installation cost, and is well worth doing.

Some folks save a lot on water heater by install on off switch...I went from apx. 175 00 per month to 31.00 ... I'm one person , totally electric..great learning curve...I have new fridge..one chest freezer, led lights I do a lot of zone heating / cooling and other things 😶 you might discover advantage of on demand hot water heater.maintaining hot water is very inefficient. I'm also heating water closer to tub / shower area .idea of gas heater in areas for cozy is VERY good I do that also...then heat and cool window units are off or very low setting...I have two units ....three bedroom house ( old house ) . FYI...I'm 77 mow a huge yard with self propelled 170 Honda gas mower and 56 volt battery weed eater...I'm looking to down size for various reasons and what I've learned here GOD willing will serve me well. Love your videos.. believe mini split is way to go 👍...and your sweet family is your greatest blessing. Sam you and Angela are think outside the box folks , exactly what's needed in times we live in. @@bettyboop7738 In reference to the on / off switch for the water heater, when do you turn it on/ off? Thank you for the info above. My elec bill is killing me. I also have window units, they were supposed to be temp, but I really like having them- I pretty much keep them at 78.

@@southerngalcharm4460 southern gal...hot water heater can be turned on APX. Hour before using then turn off ,and run bath or shower... you'll have hot water and because you turn it off before you bath it won't reheat water until needed for next use. This requires a little for thought but it works and makes life in general more affordable. Hope this helps 👍❤️

Why not use a Sotz double heater that you use outside in a metal shed and only run an air line carrying the heat into the house? You burn wood and being contained in the metal shed there is little chance for a house fire. Or you could one of the new wood burning stoves in a small building that controls the air flow to and from the stove and heats the house. It is very efficient burning wood because it gasifies the wood and burns the gasses first.

Sam, I use 2 Emporia Vues in my home, one in the house panel and one in the panel at the pole. I also have solar and love the way it tracks solar input. One thing that I did to reduce my energy usage was to automate the times when my water heater is on or off. I installed a 120v outlet next to my water heater. I then bought a Wyze Smart Outlet and a 120v 2 pole 40A contactor. I plugged the Wyze Smart Outlet into the 120v outlet and then made up a cord to go from the Wyze to the 120V coil of the contactor. The contactor is then put inline with the 240V circuit feeding the water heater. This way when the smart outlet is on, the water heater is getting power. When the smart outlet is off the the water heater does not receive power. I then set up a schedule in the Wyze to turn the smart outlet on at 6 am and off at 8 am, on again at 6 pm and off again at 10 pm, on week days. For the weekends I have the smart outlet come on at 6 am and off again at 10 pm. This prevents those little top off current draws that you see throughout the day and night. Trust me that adds up. You would of course need to set your schedule to suit you but the benefits are real. And this is an inexpensive solution costing less than $50 or so. I have also recently incorporated my Emporias as well as my solar inverters into Home Assistant for even better stats as well as the other benefits of home automation.
@GreenAcreHomestead
@GreenAcreHomestead Жыл бұрын
Okay.. now that's a crazy awesome solution!!! I need to look into this contactor right away! I think we even have a 120v circuit in the space with our water heater that was an old outlet. It's the end of the line, so I terminated it in a junction box and closed it up. Now it may be of great use! Thanks for this info! Emporia have smart outlets too, so maybe that would be an easy integration with one app vs. wzye. But we also have wyze plugs and cameras, so that's easy, too. :) Thanks!!!!!!

You are so welcome! I was unaware of them prior to my research for such devices. Come to find out, they're one of the highest rated suppliers of such units. I'm happy with it to say the least! :)

Perhaps a water tank blanket would help a little with it. I had one at a previous residence. Don’t know how much it helped as it was gas.

What a great bit of kit. Also if you wanted to go off grid completely then it will give you an idea how much solar you would need. Great video please keep up the great work. Kev

I actually understood more of this than I thought….we have a smart metre for gas and electric but I quite honestly leave this to my hubby…but it’s interesting as shows when we are in the green or red depending on energy…. I laughed one day when he was home…I put the washer dryer on to get his work clothes ready…he watched it turn red….I put cooker on to cook his tea… again he saw red… so if we don’t do laundry or eat we’re good I told him 🤣🤣Thank goodness it stays green when we watch tv and I have a cordless vacuum that stays green…darn! 🤣🤣 we actually love that it shows cost daily it really helps you see where your money goes or stayed😉😉! Great video especially here in Britain right now with our energy crisis! 🙋🏻‍♀️🇬🇧💕jane

This seems like a great device and honestly something I would consider installing. I'm curious to see the difference in energy usage between a standard water heater compared to a tankless one.

Bought a similar device (Sense) and installed it on a weekend home. The intent was to help size a stand-by generator system and also to monitor the power consumption when the generator was operating. Over the course of several months, the device has recognized nearly all my connected loads. With this device, I am able to verify my freezers are operating. Also, I was able to identify some ancillary devices and virtually eliminate.

I use wood pellets here in New England. Heating oil and propane are at an all time high. Propane fireplace do you just have your own tank and fill like one does for the grill. What if you use solar to preheat your incoming water to hot water tank. Life uncontained has this if you are interested. A lot of electronics are running in the background even when off. I enjoyed the geeking out with you.
