"There is nothing expressly written in the rules that says that a *player* cannot serve as a mount for another *player* ". Might be awkward when you're trying to play at the table and one player is mounting the other. But the rulebooks don't really set limits to what players can do (that is what the law is for). The rules are there to set limits on what player characters can do.

I get the feeling my "Mounted Combatant tank" comment on an earlier video helped inspire this build, and I'm more than happy with that! It's an exciting way to tank, and rarely taken advantage of! (Try combining it with the Sanctuary spell for even stronger defense.)

My favourite thing about this ruling is the benefits of mounted combatant applies when you are mounted. Now, thanks to the issues of the english language, this technically could apply when you are mounted(on a mount) or mounted(being a mount)

I always see people saying a barbarian mount with a wizard riding them, but the other way round is so much better, the wizard is a mount and a halfling barbarian or something is riding them and has the mounted combatant feat which allows the barbarian to put all the damage targeting the wizard on them self.

Hmmm... well, the obvious pick would be either the Centaur race or the Moon Druid class (or both which could allow for the saddle to remain in place when wild shaping). Other options include: Custom Lineage (says you can pick your look, doesn't force you to be bipedal), Van Richten's lineages (Centaur Dhampir, Centaur Reborn, Centaur Hexblood - technically you wouldn't get to keep the benefits of the Equine Build feature, but you'd still stay at a medium size and with the bottom part of a horse). Odd possibility: Armorer Artificer with an armor designed for a person with a mountable protrusion in the back and two extra legs? The Arcane Armor feature reads: "The armor replaces any missing limbs, functioning identically to a limb it replaces.", although I assume it means a limb missing from the body and not a limb missing from inside the armor, otherwise you could also have more than two functional arms. Still, if you want to and your DM would allow you that for the sake of being mountable... go for it. Assuming it's not a Druid - I'm guessing either Paladin for the auras' benefits to always include the rider, Ancestral Guardian/Totem Warrior Barbarian for the advantage/disadvantage shenanigans, Armorer Artificer for the same reason as the Barbarian, Battlemaster Fighter (see before), and last and probably least likely but it does have a d10 hit die so... Beast Master Ranger? I don't think Ranger is really likely (and the Beast Master subclass even less so) but if you wanted two mounts instead of one for some reason with the option of aquatic ones, there you have it. I'm guessing the rider would be a Rogue because of Sneak Attack, but I'm not sure how being in a saddle affects Evasion and Dex saves. Cavalier would obviously work with any "attack only me" type of mount because they can then impose definite disadvantage on a single target + get the benefits of the Born to the Saddle feature. A Paladin on a different Paladin would allow both rider and mount to constantly benefit from both auras. Exciting stuff, can't wait!

Based on the properties of Mounted Combatant, I'm going to guess the rider is the tank, since MC can redirect all direct attacks and gives the mount Evasion. Possibly with Interception and/or Protection fighting style(s), though that wouldn't be strictly necessary for the mount, though it might be situationally better and useful for the rest of the party. Also going to guess Barbarian for the mount since Reckless Attack isn't particularly threatening when the enemies can't target you properly.

I made a really weird mounted build the other day in a one-shot, and I was mind-blown at how hard it was to kill. Lore Bard 10, Peace Cleric 3 I was a Kobold (new rules, not pack tactics) riding a Polar Bear (reflavored as a giant lizard, but same stats, and the DM gave it a climb speed instead of a swim speed). My mount Mildred was the actual character fighting. Her rider Zeek was a pure support whose only purpose was keeping her alive and fighting. Warding Bond was the staple here. It said the mount would need to wear the ring, but the spell doesn't specify that it has to be on its finger, so it was on a chain around her neck, worked into the harness. I upcast Aid to level 7 for 35 HP to her, me, and one other teammate. Her health went from 42 to 77. Mine went from 94 to 129. She gained +1 to armor and saves, and resistance to all damage, sending the rest to me, so essentially we combined our HP pools and I added 70 total to that pool. Then I'd use Emboldening Bond on her and any other party members, particularly martials looking to land attacks more easily. Basically once-per-turn Bless without concentration. Find Greater Steed makes ANY spell that Zeek cast only on himself apply to her as well. It's go time. Armor of Agathys (Lv6) Mirror Image (Lv2) Fire Shield (Lv4) Shadow of Moil (Lv4) or Spirit Shroud (Lv3) or Haste (Lv3) Sanctuary (Lv1) The Sanctuary drops from Mildred the moment she attacks something, but that's fine. That's the one spell that was specifically for Zeek anyway. His only important magical items were a Staff of Healing and a Guardian Emblem to cancel crits. He doesn't attack anyone anyway, so I can use the rules where my steed can attack, but doesn't share initiative with me. Perfectly acceptable. As a Lore Bard, I can use cutting words to reduce the damage of 5 attacks per short rest. This on top of Warding Bond keeps those 30 temp HP from Armor of Agathys going so much longer, as attackers get blasted for stupid amounts of damage from 2-3 different return-damage spells. If they try to ignore the mount and kill the rider, they have to pass a Wisdom save first, or redirect the attack to someone else (like Mildred) anyway. And even if they succeed, they have to hit through your mirror images. And even if they do, they have to get through cutting words damage reductions. And even if they do, you have all the same shields as your mount, so they hurt themselves and probably won't even touch your real HP. So attacking you personally is almost meaningless. Your mount has okay damage, nothing crazy, but the fact that they have to contend with a whole-ass support riding it does make you a problem. If your mount is getting worn down after a long fight, you can always cast Cure Wounds on yourself (with a slot or your staff), healing you both. Considering you're sharing an HP pool, that's doubled healing. In a pinch, Aura of Vitality can be used for regular, constant sustained healing, applying to both you and the mount as a bonus action for one minute. If you run out of good slots to spend Armor of Agathys on, self-casting Heroism means getting 5 temp HP every turn for both of you, which soaks up 10 damage per round every round for only a 1st level slot. Over that minute, you've ignored up to 100 damage. Not a ton, but it buys time for your healing. At later levels you'll also have Heal (140 HP to your combined health bars) or Regenerate (less of a bulk heal, but it heals 1 HP to each of you every turn for an hour, which can save you resources in the long run). If your DM is feeling generous, you could always take Spirit Guardians instead of Spirit Shroud, as the target is listed as "self", allowing BOTH of you to have that spell going. Some may argue that this spell is area damage, and thus not a spell that "targets only you", to keep that from being abused, but it's really not necessary for the build. You're honestly fine without it. And don't forget, you can hold an action to use Balm of Peace when your mount begins moving, and run around healing your entire team, during which time you are personally immune to opportunity attacks, but the mount isn't (the one you want to be attacked).

In a campaign I played a while back, my character was a Warforged tank for the party but our dm let me have my size be much larger at the cost of 5 feet less movement every round. We then also had a spellcaster who was a halfling. Our favourite thing to do was for me to pick him up and put him on one of my shoulders whilst we were traveling or fighting. Man that was a fun campaign

Centaur being ridden by a paladin with mounted combat feat. All attacks can be taken by the paladin and both get aura of protection? Centaur is rogue or barbarian? (Maybe with if you attack my ally you get disad). Or ranged and centaur is a wizard and ridden by ranged eldritch knight?

In my campaign my character, a centaur paladin serve commonly as a mount for my allies and even pull the cart for my team. This is a specific situation where it makes sense at least but it definitely means its possible at some tables

I played a centaur ancestral guardians barbarian with a buddy playing a halfling cavalier fighter in a low level campaign that ended at 5th level. I took Sentinel and buddy took Mounted Combatant at fourth. We had a twilight cleric in the party and the enemies literally couldn’t get enough damage on the board to down us in our encounters.

So for mount I would guess either centaur like everyone else guessed or bugbear for the synergy with rune knight. I would think that a order cleric dip by either the "mount" or "mounted" would be a good idea. As for other classes that would make good picks, wolf totem barbarian, AG barbarian, rogue (especially phantom), ranger, or paladin, but ranged characters would it easier to fight depending on the initiative order on the other hand a lot of perks of being mounted are best for melee, so mobile will be a must, I think.

Everyone going Centaur or Druid, but where are the chads with Loxodon and Simic Hybrid suggestions of using the extra limb(s) to support the mounted small character?

I am in the process of creating a centaur build as a mount to have an Allie riding on it, I was looking into rogue & barbarian and I’m not sure what weapons we will be using so I still need to work on it a bit, but I wanted my mount to be faster than other mounts with Mobil feat to get out of melee without opportunity attacks.

This is a superfun thought experiment, and can work out pretty powerful. "Mount:" Centaur / Goliath / Loxodon - Ancestral Guardian Barbarian rocking Sentinel + GWM + Halberd (grab Rune Knight 4 at some point) "Rider": Kobold - Twilight Cleric + Mounted Combatant + Resilient Constitution Or consider: Centaur / Goliath / Loxodon - Phantom Rogue with Sentinel Ridden by: Goblin - Bladesinger + Mounted Combatant

If I were DMing, I’d say that a Small humanoid could piggyback on top of, say, an Aarakocra. I’m predicting a Centaur/Aarakocra Rogue and either a Small Custom Lineage or Kobold with the Mounted Combatant feat.

Have previously done a ancestral guardian centaur with levels in cleric for warding bond and heals on the rider. Could also see armorer artificer for the disadvantage on all targets… but whats the rider? Is this going to be an order domain cleric with a rogue on top for healing word giving hp and a reaction attack that procs sneak attack? Very intrigued.

I had a Goliath Rune Knight who acted as a mount for a Halfling Ranger. He had *equipment* heavier than the Halfling, and sitting on the Goliath's shoulders ala 'Pike & Grog' style kinda made sense. I do know there is some sage advice against Centaurs serving as mounts, though, if that's where you're going with your next video. Only because it's something that came up enough for Mr Crawford to weigh in.

This reminds me of a guy who wanted to play a really tough barbarian, that was not very inteligent. In various situations the player would make inteligent choices for the barbarain to act under, only to have the DM make the barbarian role on Int or Wis everytime he made an"intelectual" desicion. (the Barbarian really was that thick I dont think the player repeated that build in a hurry.

I am not really a mount (ingame ;) ) but my wifes character, a mousefolk, often travels on the shoulder of my Minotaur. She's my Pikachu.

been working on a mounted character, but am close to scrapping because the rules for mounted combat simply do not allow mounted combat. gotta talk to my dm, because if you play mounted combat RAW, you're better off just not doing that.
