Thanks for reviewing this! I saw it on another channel a week or 2 ago and looked for macro reviews but NO ONE covered the tilt function while shooting macro, just while shooting normal landscape scenes. So glad to see this lens actually working to extend DoF. I will have to pick one up in the future as that will be super fun to play with.

I used to do this with 4X5 Graphic View camera back in 1978 at our lab at Boeing. We would tilt the front lens board forward and the rear film board backward as I recall to get the most DOF. This was routine.

Cool video and nice lens too! One thing about the depth of field tilting that’s good to know is the following: If you are sooting for example a table at an angle at f/2.8 and you tilt the lens at an angle, if you could extend the plane of the sensor to meet the plane of the table, and the angle of the lens also by extension, intersects the point where the other two planes intersect too, you have infinite depth of field in that table.

Awesome review Micael! Always loved the miniature effect one can achive with a tilt shift lens. Even if it’s not optically perfect, definitely usable in certain scenarios. Thanks for sharing your findings:) Have a nice weekend!

As with any tilt system, the DOF for a given aperture and focussing distance is constant, the plane of focus can be altered, as shown, but you don’t get any ‘more’.

I am not sure I understand, is this not the same as just making sure your lens is more "parallel" with the subject? in tight spaces I could see it giving you more ability to get into that "parallel" position, but certainly this is just a novelty and not truly practical? Maybe you could make a short video with this lens recording while you have the camera on a tripod and the lens is fully tilted while you are spinning the lens? I would be interested to see how that looks.

You are right, that is another way of achieving the same depth of field. But that would be a completely different composition, which is not always what we want.

At the end of this video, Micael talks about how the channel depends upon viewers subscribing to his Patreon. Having recently done so, I can tell you that it's easily worth it just for the ability to participate in photo critiques and editing demonstrations. If you're considering it, I hope to see you there. Micael, thanks for making this video. Though I don't think this is a good lens for me, I find its expanded depth-of-field very tempting.

I have a very good Nikon F to Z tilt adapter, and a bunch of ‘ancient’ F glass that become a wonderful macro when reversed. But, I Oder how it could work hand held. I doubt if any tilt shift lens can work hand held, but I’d love to be contradicted, :-)

I had a Nikon 85mm tilt-shift for about a year or so. It was great for product photography, but only went to 1:2, and was F-mount. That is one stellar lens, but adding the FTZ and extension tubes to make it "good" for natural macro work created a cumbersome system. Too bad this lens seems to be a little poor optically, I was very excited for it. Would you happen to have macro samples available for download?
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell Жыл бұрын
Sorry I don't have any samples for download. But I can tell you that it is very sharp at smaller apertures. Only problem is on the wider apertures. So if you use it for macro photography and have plenty of light, it shouldn't be an issue.

@@giklab what’s the verdict?
@giklab
@giklab Жыл бұрын
@@thomasemory4352 Thanks for the reminder. I am satisfied with mine, I think it's better optically than Micael's lens. Like mentioned, it vignettes on FF, but if you turn off IBIS it is actually not quite as pronounced, because the sensor doesn't push itself even further beyond the image area. The tilt effect is quite cool, though in practice I ended up using it less than I thought I would. It's still a very useful feature for product photography, for example. My current problem is having time to go out and take photos, rather than anything to do with the lens.

ufff this heavy vignetting reduces the tilt range... better get a canon eos to sony E tilt shit adapter from Fotodiox and adapt any eos mount macro lens or combine with a mamiya 645 os eos adapter and use the superb Mamiya 645 macro lens. you will get tilt and shift and can use a lot of lenses, not only one. I use Contax/Yashica Zeiss lenses with wonderful results. the 50mm at f2 fives woderful results so does the 28mm and the 85mm

Maybe I'm just not used to macro lenses, or interchangable lenses in general, because that focus throw seems a million miles long! Then again, I guess I'm not dealing with a DOF of millimeters...fair enough

Tilting lens a based on the Scheimpflug principle. I used that principle on an engineering project for medical equipment when I graduated from mechanical engineering in 1980. We were working on a system to analyse and numerically describe the shape of handicaped feet so we could later numericallly produce a mold of the feet with some kind of CNC machine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheimpflug_principle.
