Well we finally found out what the Can Am Defender XT Cab can and cannot do with the Apache 360 LT tracks! Despite this little setback we still had a great time winter camping. We had to change our plans a bit but it all worked out well!
We also got chance to test out the Therm-a-rest Polar Ranger Sleeping Bag!
We also answer some submitted subscriber questions! 😉
/ the_emporium_youtube
We make a small commission from Amazon sales and this really helps us out with purchasing future gear for adventures!
Best wishes Michael & Esme 🐶

X2! Me too! There’s something about watching folks and dogs beside a campfire that just decompresses the soul. The only concern I had on this vid was this - did you have to worry about clinkers and sparks from the fire landing on your downhill stuff, Mike? All my gear had burn holes in it...😔

Great trip! Your arctic bag reminded me of the bag I was issued at Dover AFB in Delaware in 1977. You could scrunch the air hole down to about 3 inches, plus we wore a felt sleeping hood as well. Very comfortable and you didn't want to get out of it in the morning -- like you said. I kept a two liter (litre) soda bottle in there to pee in...and then I had a hot water bottle as well. Ha ha. We were in military GP medium tents; about 4 or 5 to a tent. The door flap would not close in the one I was in. The temperature was about -9c and the wind was gusty. Still, the bag was great. I was only 27 then, and now I'll be 70 on the 1st of May. Where did the years go? Keep on making the most of your years. You made me nervous almost getting stuck there.

Thanks David! They had some good gear back then! I especially like my AF mukluks you mentioned you had on previous posts! I'm 49 this year and try and make the most of these years, especially with Esme. My grandmother is 36 years older than you! This is her second pandemic 😉 Hope you stay safe David! Thanks for answering my question I am researching camera systems and stuff before I make a channel for myself and I love that your all about encouraging others to become passionate about camping A tip for you as someone who camps in a lavvu with a dog Use the tent half to measure 3 poles from gromit end to point then make a tripod having a centre pole when camping with a dog is really annoying and I always make my tent pegs aswell so it's just part of my routine just got to smooth over and perfect the point of the tripod Takes a while longer but it is worth it to me and my dog Louis 😎

Had to check my subscriptions list. You are indeed there. 1 of 4. Parsed the list down over a month ago. Like Esme's little balloon comments. Who says dogs aren't judgemental??? My idea of winter camping is going to my camp with heat and inside facilities.. Both my dogs will sleep with me at camp but not at home. Funny little hounds. Seeing the title picture of the Defender "stuck", I'm thinking, well that must of sucked. Been there. Now that I'm older and less nimble. I have to slow down and really assess my self recovery scenarios. Glad you didn't have to call in air support.

The Emporium Outdoors well I spent my first night in the gazelle. It got down -3 Celsius here last night I’m proud of myself for sleeping out in that lol I have a really nice Kelty -20 sleeping bag so I was nice and toasty warm and I had a buddy heater in the tent with me. I wish there was a way for us to exchange pictures in here. It felt so good to camp after so long spring is finally here. Just wanted to give you an update. I’m so excited I’m going to camp for the next few days out in the yard. We’re supposed to get rain tonight so it will be cold and rainy this will be the big test.

It's amazing how easy it is to get stuck in fresh snow. Once the chassis becomes buoyant and the vehicle starts floating..you're done! I have been stopped so many times in jeeps and trucks. You're right about about help...the only thing that could pull you out if you go any further is maybe a 6x6 M939... Else have to come back and get your vehicle later in the spring like some hunters that get snowed in.

Here in 2 weeks I head for the Adirondacks for winter camping in the spring . Been doing it 18 years now and gets harder every year as I has to hike in 3 mil's, seasonal roads, so yeh . 😒 But like you I have my 85250 king quad that go's about any place I point it in or at . It's . Front and rear racks and a wench and ropes if need be .The quad just let's me bring in more modern things to help . Funny how a chain saw can cut down time preping for a fire 😁 . Nice bag/pad... but, (I agree) when it breaks up what you enjoy, what's the point? That might be a nice set-up to add inside of a hammock and have something to cover the foot area for Esme to nest into during the cold months. That was some pretty deep snow, smart move not trying to push it too hard. Hat's off to ya my friend. You're hungry for a piece of meat, so you eat one... on video, and not apologizing to anyone for it. Nor, SHOULD YOU apologize to anyone. Enjoy the slab of goodness and eat what you choose to eat.

Esme and Hope too sleep close to us for protection when camping or just in the house and I can't sleep without her. I thought you were like me and unable to get into a mummy bag? I bought another one for Hope but she didn't want to sleep alone so I doubled them up and let me tell you that it's one hell of a Big mummy bag now. Lol Man needs meat and potatoes but if you want you can get Herring for breakfast or as us Scottish call them Kippers lol. Get some beef suet from the butcher and fry veggies in a tablespoon of it, or beef jerky rehydrated in your cup of soup for extra flavor. Stay safe from me and Hope.

Smoke me a kipper! I'll be home for breakfast! I love kippers but they are not a thing in Canada unfortunately 😔 Normally the mummy bags are not great for me but for very cold weather I can tolerate them. Zipping two together is a great idea! I bet Hope loves that! 🐶

Looked like your new sleeping bag was in fact a whale giving birth to a ....human arm!!! Ok for the funny part. As for the video , once again super quality, well edited, so relaxing to watch and especially so much appreciated in theses hard times. Thank you for the Q and A segment, it's nice to get to know you better. Looks like your new machine will Take you where you want to go. Very impressive. I hope the engine starting issue with your machine is not a lingering problem in cold-cold weather. I Used to have a Kawasaki brute force 750 V-Twin engine. It was an absolute pane to start when it got -20 c or so. Even the pull start woodsnap if you try to pull it over in -20 Celsius. Cord would just snap off. Engine just way too tight. Compression or whatever. Not sure. Never figured it out. All I know is "cold weather no good" Hope your machine is not same - same.

Glad you are liking the videos! I prefer to camp alone and although mechanical breakdowns are possible I'm prepared for that eventually if it ever hits. I've owned an Argo and would not recommend them unless you have an edge case for travelling in muskeg or swamps a lot. The tracks put a big strain on the Argos and half their chain life. Also the Argo I owned with the 18" Plastic Super tracks sucked so bad in snow it wasn't funny. The Can Am is by far a more capable machine but sadly does not float on water 😄

Nice touch with the Q&A! I estimate my Pioneer 500 with tracks to be around 1500 pounds (including extras) But it uses the same sized tracks as on your defender. Maybe that gives it a bit more ability to stay up on the snow...but not all snow is created equal. I just switched back to wheels For late season ice fishing and man it feels good to have a softer ride and lower rpm’s! Do you leave some of the track mounting hardware on your sxs permanently? How long does it take to switch wheels to tracks? Thanks, press on!
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Norm - Totally right - there are many types of snow (I've learnt this over the years! 😄) - This was the heavy sticky stuff! I'm probably 1000lb over the P500 - I'm enjoying the tracks but I'm looking forward to the wheels too! 😊 I can take the fronts off in about 15 minutes per side - The rears about the same. I'll remove all the hardware from the front but keep the rears on as it has some hardware that bolts through the lower control arm. Shouldn't get in the way!

Those tracks are for less deep snow, wet ground, mud to a certain depth. Can Am also has deep snow tracks that are better suited for conditions such as this. But can't be used on hard ground or mud. Apache Backcounty tracks. Tracks add another dimension to your SXS use, but, they also have their limits.

The bag looks great. I saw a video of a different bag with a side zip and that’s definitely interesting. Is it easier to use? Can you use the venting ports to zip the middle then zip the port closed from the inside? Side zips can be difficult and I too have struggled with situations where it would more advantageous if the bag zipped on the other side. My old bag zipper was on the opposite side as my stove. My new bag opens towards my stove which is also the direction I get on my mat. The other side is the tent wall, that doesn’t help. Looks like it worked in the morning, cool 😊❤️🇺🇸☃️❄️🛷⛺️

I like the bag and its a great size for me (5' 9" @ 200lbs) if I was much taller I would need the larger model. The arm zips can be opened inside or outside. The middle zip was a MUST for me as like you - It gets awkward dealing with left and right zips for different situations 🤔. The hood is glorious and perfect for open air camping 👍

Wondering which tracks to get, do you think the Backcountry LT would have made it instead of thee 365's?
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lou - I think a lot of is down to your riding conditions. I don't think I could run the Backcountry tracks because, I'm in deep snow, not much snow, iced gravel tracks and sometimes water and patches of snow at the end of the season. The 360 LT's can do all that as they have smaller track lugs that won't get damaged and wheels not sliders, that need to be kept cool by snow. My machine is also around 2200-2400lb with the tracks so I don't think it would have made that much difference. It was the only place I found I couldn't go that year! 👍

@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
The Cam-Am on tracks is way superior than the Argo. There is a reduction already with the tracks so you can ride in high and switch to low for the deeper stuff. I agree about the SWT - There might be one of those in my near future 😉

That's great new on the Defender! I'll be trading mine in next year (will be 3 years old by then) for a limited! Top speed with tracks is about 40kmph as I recall. The tracks gear down the machine quite a bit. There are also 2 track types - Backcountry and Apache 360 LT. Backcountry is for snow only and use sliders, Apaches can be used in mixed conditions, snow, wet, dry and use bogie wheels. For me the Apache 360 LT was the right choice 👍
