Good for you Kevin! Hope you have a happy retirement (in 4 years 😄)! Best way to start is in the backyard. Test all your equipment, figure out anything you forgot then take a trip to the bush. Its a very satisfying way to camp, knowing you are keeping yourself warm, plus it a nice activity feeding the stove while listening to some music or a podcast 👍 Let me know how it works out if you try it!

Hi Michael and Esme! Nice enjoyable long video just the way I like it. Boy I'm really jealous of that reindeer hide , looks like Esme did you a favor by taking the sleeping bag and leaving the hide to you ! Your wife was spot on with this gift. Concerning the first section of the stove pipe that sits on the stove, I solved the problem by welding three 90 degree steel corner braces ( 1 inch x 1 inch) on top of the stove . They are already pre-drilled so you just screw the pipe using auto-drilling screws ....super safe ! Nice use of that long handle shovel holding the stove pipe. It's nice to have many uses with the same tool. Take care !!
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stéphane - We were both covered in feathers!!! 😆 But it was nice to sleep under the reindeer skin. Surprising comfortable! I like the idea of the corner bracers - I was going to do the same sort of thing! I hear lots of people warning about the Carbon Monoxide danger but not many people mention the stove pipe security. I feel that's as much an issue to be honest 👍 All the best for 2021! 😉

Your tips for screwing the stove pipes together & bracing them up outside are really important. I watched a video the other night where they had an extensive length of light weight vertical stove pipe sections where they were going to leave the structure set up for the entire winter. I left the same tips. ! ~winks~

Yup - It's a very important safety tip and not mentioned enough in videos. I had it disconnect on me a few times during the camping in the past and that "could" be fatal if you were asleep for instance 👍

About a month ago I decided to try out them little packets of instant coffee, which is a powder form. I'm used to having the jars of instant. I been going with Nescafé Rich for so long. Anyway, I got a box of the camp packets and as I like my Nescafé so much I stuck with their brand, but I got their _Sweat & Creamy_ French Vanilla packets. I love french vanilla cappuccinos which is what I get at Tim Hortons. Well... I am very happy with these packets. It is real good stuff, so I'm gonna keep stocking up on those once in a while. Nice thing with these flavored powder type of coffees, is I don't need to add as much sugar, so that will save on weight in my pack, having less sugar to carry. Plus the weight difference of the coffee packets is less than the regular instant I'd use before.

Esme says " I think your mistaken, the hide was purchased by mom for me actually". haha! Awesome to see the Lynx just laying in the road. I have only ever saw one in my life and it was actually swimming to an island. I thought is was some ducks but as I got closer realized it was a cat! I backed off paddling and just watched it go up on the shore, shake and take to the woods. Too bad on the sleeping bag. I have a few things from OneTigris and they usually make quality stuff for a reasonable price. That was a lot of down and I wouldn't have been too happy about that either. Wonderful night out, thanks for sharing. :) :)

Really good advice on how to get the best from your stove mate, I shall take it in to account. I have a spare flue pipe segment with a dampener on it but doesn’t fit the other flue pipe segments due to it being from a different stove, if I can some way convert it I’ll. w laughing. I’ll have one that the front and then that also which like you say with a little playing about I’ll be able to get it running efficiently. The Reindeer hide was just ace wasn’t it and obviously it was keeping you toasty. Lovely sausage and egg in the morning for you too Michael. Thanks for the upload mate 👍

Happy new year Micheal. Not sure if you follow Lonewolf 902, he's up in your neck of the woods (I live out in Australia now so anywhere in the same country is "your neck of the wood's!"). You might want to check him out and his dealing's with One Tigress. Awesome video as always mate, we don't get snow here in Queensland, so seeing your camp site's in the snow is a kind of memory of the old country. I remember my grandparent's village in Oxfordshire getting snowed in for weeks a time as a kid, and as a teen getting to within 1/2 mile of the village only to be met by an 8 ft snow drift and having to walk the rest of the way in. Stay safe and give Esme a scratch behind the ear for me!

Hi Steve - I also watch Lonewolf 902 and did leave him a comment. I sympathize to some degree but if you are "doing work" for anyone without first agreeing the terms of the arrangement, you are leaving yourself open to disappointment and altercation. When I deal with vendors (with my channel) I know exactly what's expected and what I get in return. Those companies use smaller channels to promote their products essentially for the cost of the item, and in the early channel days we are all happy for the new gear alone. As your channel grows and your influence is more "saleable" the terms of the deal should change and be agreed upon ahead of time . Just my opinion as a businessman 👍 Thats awesome about Oxfordshire! I used to live there and its so amazingly beautiful in the snow - they must be some great memories!

Not a bad idea. However, when I tried it, it does not do well in wind. 15-20 miles and it collapsed. And the wind blows dirt from under the tent. Just a warning for those wanting to try it.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
So the snow skirt should block the wind if you cover with snow. Also there are straps to tie down the windward sides, in the even of strong gusts. This tent is pretty solid in strong wind if you use the supplied equipment 👍

There's that GOOD girl, Alberta's best camp dog ! If lynx are about, could be some good bunny-busting if they're in season. They're a favorite snack for a lynx. Question for you, would that Helinox cot work with the Teton tent? Looks like the Helinox packs away into a smaller package. Congrats on the Reindeer hide. They are nice and warm ! Too bad on that One Tigris bag not working out. I'd be most concerned about the down shedding. I'm with you, gimme a nice/big rectangular bag with draft baffles and a SOLID zipper which works two ways and can connect a second bag for couples' sleeping comfort. Have you considered using Flax Seed Oil to "season" the wood stove while it's still hot, like you would the cast iron? Kind of nice to keep the rust at bay, if that'd work. Good camp-out, always a pleasure to watch one of your vids and to enjoy (with you) the antics of Esme and Simon. And, NOTHING warms the body like a furnace full of meat ! Good lookin' sammich there Kemosabe.

You are spot on about the Lynx - I think he was watching something and didn't see me 😄 probably a rabbit! Not sure about the TETON tent - the TETON XXL is a very large cot but I might set it up and test 🤔. I was also disappointed about the OneTigris bag as there other products have always been great 😔. I do need to do some work on the stove. I cleaned it all up at the start of hot tent camping and its already a little rusty. I might try the oil trick! 👍 Until next time 🍻

Have you noticed a difference since BassPro bought out Cabela's ? Personally I preferred Cabela's "ORIGINAL MERCHANDISE" versus the BassPro influence. Cabela's gear was always "Top Of The Line" versus budget oriented with Bass Pro. Your opinion please. So Asketh JimInCincy
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim - I'm with you on this. I was very disappointed when Cabela's sold out to BassPro and lots of long term employee's got laid off. Like most retailers now, they make the mistake of profit over repeat business. I personally don't want the cheapest, I want a selection of goods that range from affordable to the best, and I don't mind paying for it, as long as the product is supported by the reseller (returns/repairs etc). In Canada a few years ago, we also lost WholeSale Sports - a competitor to Cabela's which reduced local competition even further.

Why no tarp for a floor? I'd think that a warm tent would end up melting snow and making the "floor" a bit soggy, if not a little muddy.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
It actually works better with no floor in cold temperatures. You get some melt from under the stove but not much and it dries quick. Also you don't have to worry about going in and out with snow covered boots on 👍

Regarding the wood stove, you don't need to use a heat shield behind it? In addition, it seems you didn't bring along a carbon monoxide detector.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
No need for the heat shield - the radiated temperature is low and there is enough space from the stove to the tent wall. I have previously used a laser thermometer to ensure this on previous trips. Most of the heat is generated by convected heat from the top of the stove. Because I have open vents on the tent and there is no floor (space under the skirt) fresh air is always being drawn in. If the tent had a sealed inner I would be cautious of CO levels but not in this style of hot tent. Hope that helps! 👍

With you promoting the Cabella wide base insulated ice shanty, why not get them to put a stove pipe opening in the actual tent instead of making one and possibly wrecking the tent? Also there should be an optional floor if you plan to camp on it.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Diana - to be clear, I'm not promoting Cabela's and have no relationship with them 👍 Removing the existing window is simple as its held in with velcro, the same as the stove jack I made. No chance of damage. Personally, I never use floors during winter camping. They cause more issues than they solve 👍 Hope that helps! 😉
