While I do agree it was good to see the truck actually struggling and not just going down a groomed course, that's a 5 rated trail per OnX, so pretty moderate. And of course they had pre-run the track to make sure everybody would get through just fine and had their people there on-site making sure everything was managed. All that said this might be the new standard in off-road capable EVs. Certainly can't say that from just this video but this might be the first time I've seen an EV off road and didn't hate it at first sight. And it sounds like the 2-motor version would actually be better since it gets real lockers - you could see several times on this video where the rear sim-u-locker wasn't able to cope.

Yes and no - I'm sure there will be some buyers with plenty of play money who will take it out to play even if only a few times. I'd expect more than the G or RR (which both go well beyond this price as well). Purely speculation of course, but it seems like the mentality of the buyer for this would be more inclined to do so compared to the others. Sorta viewing this more as a giant Jeep than a luxury SUV. Then again I may just be talking out of my ass - I don't expect to see any of the on the Rubicon any time soon.

its interesting watching these extreme SUVs EVs off-road. The 3 things TFL mention do hinder the off-road EV. There weight seems to be a real problem, we saw them just sliding off course in almost every shot. The virtual lockers just can't work like a traditional locker as Tommy said probably due to the excessive weight. Also it looks like they would all benefit with a low range gearbox as the throttle response makes them all look really jerky and pretty amateur when they're clearly not. Even the rear steering doesn't seem to help with this heavy beast. It's a shame, all the great tech seems thwarted with it's lack of control, usability in the real world.

So far, the closest I came was climbing to parking lot that was a bit higher than the parking lot I was in, without having to drive all the way around (LOL!), just drove over the concrete embankment without a problem.

I agree that the weight is a major issue with EVs off-road - although there’s a lot of tech on that beast beyond the batteries that are adding weight. I suspect that the other stuff - which appears to primarily relate to the programming - will get figured out over time. My Wrangler 4Xe doesn’t have the throttle issue you guys talk about. I don’t know if I’ve just gotten used to it or it’s because they figure it out for the ‘24s, but in low range I find that I electric-only is my preferred set-up off-road. My second Tesla is much better than my first and FSD is now actually usable on the road. That’s the thing about tech, it typically gets better over time. BEVs and hybrids will improve over time and these guys will eventually figure out the best set-up that actually works both on and off-road.

These trucks will not be around or collectible in 10 years unless there is an affordable way to convert it to a V8. The batteries are so expensive that most of these new ones will be in junk yards in 4 to 8 years if they don't melt from battery fires. GM has done a good job with their batteries compared to other manufactures when it comes to not catching fire as I haven't heard of a Hummer EV catching fire yet. However, there are not many on the road yet. TFL absolutely should mention the potential fire risks of owning an EV everytime they do an ev video. Not many people understand the fire risk and safety should come first, even if it makes the car company that invited you out for testing not so happy. However, they never say anything particularly bad about any new car they test anymore because they are afraid GM will give them the Subaru treatment. I miss the old days, when TFL was not afraid to make a not so nice review.

Great video. Although EVs may not be ready for the mainstream - lack of range, excessive weight, infrastructure, and cost being a few hurdles still yet to tackle - this is a good look of what's to come in the next ten to twenty years. Personally I'd like a smaller version more akin to the H3 of years past (similar in size to a 4Runner or Wrangler) and maybe a PIEV option rather than full electric. But in any case, it's an exciting glimpse into the future. EVs don't have to be boring.

@@Nebula1701oh, for around town driving or even short road trips they're fine. I'm thinking more along the lines of off roading, like in this video. If you're out in the desert, you need to have the battery capacity to run the trail all day and then get back into town. Donut did a Cybertruck video where their range dropped like a rock off road. ICE cars can carry Jerry cans for the times they need extra range, but you can't do that with EVs. It'll be solved eventually.
@Nebula1701
@Nebula1701 Ай бұрын
@@backwoodstherapy Hummer has twice the battery capacity of the Cybertruck and off-roading is its home. Anyway... other EVs would be able to charge up the EV needing a boost. Many are now getting V2V charging capability. (Vehicle to Vehicle charging) There are also portable batteries you can get for quick charge ups... just enough to get ya back to the start of the trail where there should be some Charging stations.

Maybe you should wait 50 years? I have been driving teslas since 2016, range around 350 miles, supercharge about 5 times a year for a total of 2 hrs, 1 trip to tesla every 2 years fir minimal maintenance, how much time a year you spend going to gas stations? I have seen the lines at Costco gas

You pushed these much harder than the Toyota's. Has the Tacoma become less capable, durable? Looks a bit scary on the downhill, could run away with all the weight. Also off camber looks like the weight pulls it sideways more.

Two 40 lbs (16 kg) propane bottles with a small 3 KW Propane fuel cell generator would easily solve that issue. The Propane fillup would be less than 160 AUD ... I can get a propane generator for as cheap as 700 cdn (800 AUD) so range is no longer an issue AND the propane will support a lot of shrimp on the barbie!

@@djtesseract3064 It wouuld be debatble if that was enough fuel to get you through but you would run out of food anf water before you got to the end , charging from a 240v generator gives you 2km of charge for 10 minutes . To do 3000km would take 31 days of charging plus travel time , that is under ideal conditions , now add didcharge when using low range in sand dunes

EXACTLY WHY I SAID Being able to control your rear steering angle seperate. Because that tail swing can get you in trouble. Quick slide on the screen to control angle? Could've swapped to a grab walk quickly on that first obstacle. Would be a tone if fun actually.
