Chris Jordan is all in on beauty. After photographing sea birds dying by the dozens from consuming bits of plastic, Chris had a revelation: It was time to refocus in his lens on the awesome beauty of the planet. Now, he searches out natural places that can inspire us to treasure and protect them from the devastating effects of pollution and climate change.
Special thanks to core the TEDxSeattle organizing team, 100+ volunteers, and our generous partners - without you, this experience would not be possible. Find out more about our talks, speakers, entertainers, activities, and year-round events at TEDxSeattle.com.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark in-depth discussion and connection in a community setting. These events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
Chris is an internationally acclaimed photographer and filmmaker whose works are exhibited and published worldwide. His work walks the fine line between beauty and despair while exploring the dark undercurrents of our consumer culture’s focus on disposable goods and mass consumption. Chris’s first foray into the subject was the project Intolerable Beauty, which demonstrated the enormous amount of waste in various areas throughout Seattle. His next project, Running the Numbers, used innovative perspectives to illustrate the vast magnitude of our mass consumption.
Chris’s largest project to date is a series of photographs, Midway: Message from the Gyre, and the companion film, Albatross. The project was inspired by a stunning environmental tragedy that’s taking place on a tiny atoll in the North Pacific Ocean. He and his team photographed and filmed thousands of young albatrosses that lay dead on the ground, their stomachs filled with plastic, underscoring the destructive power of our culture of consumption, and our damaged relationship with the living world.

Oh my god he is speaking my heart. I have felt this is also my "mission," and then I vacillate between thinking I should be marching in the streets instead of focusing on my art, but I can no longer bring myself to share the bad news. Had a meltdown the other day with just one ominous, distressing story after another (climate apocalypse indeed, earthquakes, countdown to nuclear destruction, human trafficking, the loss of soil, and then hearing another acquaintance succumbed to cancer) coming through my newsfeed and on the radio. It is exactly that, that we turned away from valuing natural beauty and the wonder of creation. And somehow lost kindness and connection to our fellow human beings. If we could only see our interconnectedness we might be more willing to do what needs doing to protect our world and each other. And creativity and appreciation keep us resourceful. Fear is only paralyzing...motivating only to a point, until overwhelm and helplessness sets in. So I keep sharing simple things, my "daily dog walk" photos in local parks, and painting my crazy, un-tutored paintings and drawings. There seems to be a need to see such things. Don't give up.

Yes., i am tired of all the bad news indeed. Really tired in my body. The beauty you talk about takes me back to the morning dew shining like diamants in the grass.. Never forget. 🙏

This talk shares a lot of what I’ve been thinking for a long time. I used to work for a health org that advocates for tobacco laws and restrictions.... in a lot of our materials scare tactics are used , which seemed to turn people off. Especially if they were already addicted. It’s similar to dieting. If we focus on what we are taking away, we feel depleted instead of focusing on what we want to enjoy or add to our life. I have been thinking about our narrative towards the environment and people who are poor, disenfranchised and/or oppressed. How do we help people understand these subjects that have turned decisive into conversations

In the wake of Vietnam, Martin Luther King and Kennedy assassinations, Pete & Toshi Seeger inspired folks to build a sailboat still sailing fifty years on, on the River that Flows Both Ways. Fiercely tender love shared with so many, turning tide on the health of the Hudson River through appreciation of its beauty...

Chris -what do you say to people who respond "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder?" This is the problem - what you see as beauty and inspiration, an industrialist sees only obstacles in the way of exploiting resources - and they justify the removal of trees, ocean animals, magic rock formations etc. as a means to a better end for their industrial-age society . It seems that to truly help restore the Earth's beauty and integrity , we need to both absorb Earth's beauty as a source of inspiration, motivation and spiritual nourishment but at the same time we need to employ various skillful means to wake up governments and industries that drive the destruction by pointing out the stark environmental truth. This Truth is that there is we now have a very short time-line before the Earth as we know it is irreversibly altered by runaway global warming and destruction of our ocean environment: yes, the Word is the essentially on Fire and is already irreversibly changed. Perhaps Apocalypse if not the right word but Earth on Fire is now a truth, not an imaginary or religious gloom and doom notion. We need to not be afraid to acknowledge that and draw of teh enclaves of beauty remaining as sources of inspriration to forge now pathways forward.
