Simple and straightforward explaination...but with a p.f. corrected cap in circuit your household wiring draws lower utility current...so it's that much lesser stressed... Now the properly rated hardware...( wire gauge..fuse ratings...thermal trips...ckt.brakers...switches & sockets... etc ..) can be optimally downsized..so this lowers the costs....& improves the overall " safety factor" of your household equipment..so you become a contributor to improving the " electricity footprint " in s small way.

With a proper circuit board like ras pi you could hook up a capacitor for the start load, batteries for saving power, and set a charge time in your computer for the cheapest time of night. If you have solar, you can charge in daytime too. Test your home power usage before buying equipment or trying to salvage old equipment.

Note that in the USA, while most home circuits are 110-120VAC, the input into the house is 220-240VAC and then split into two 110-120VAC legs. So if the house's wiring relies on only one of the two 110-120 VAC legs, you get charged as if you used both, doubling your bill. So it is generally best to make sure that the appliances that use the most current over each day are evenly split between the two different 110-120VAC legs.

how does that work? Meter gets measured off watts. If you use only 1 leg, you are using twice as many watts on one leg but if you split them on 2 legs you are still using the same amount of watts but they are simply split in 2

Attention between KW, KVA, KVAR, KVD (distorsion wave). KVA=KW+KVAR+KVD. The metter measures only KWH, means active power, means power like in DC current, U*I=P (watt). The metter doesn't know about KVAR, KVA, KVD. For this exist special metters. The cos xx si for metter ideal, means 1. For this the metter is built to measure correctly the power for what we pay the bill. The rest is theory for us. A capacitor consumes nothing in ac/dc circuit, the resistance, capacitance is big. The voltage is danger for it.

In generator terms I'm not sure exactly what bad power factor is doing. Resistive loads provide constant slowing in the generator, but reactive loads are slowing the generator for part of the cycle and speeding it up for the other part - like putting a spring on an arm on the generator? Also they waste more energy in wires because you have higher peak currents than you need with a purely resistive load. It's like trying to start a car engine which is a combination of mechanical resistive and reactive loads. It has a flywheel which is inertia to accelerate (inductive) and compression in the cylinders (capacitive) and finally air resistance in the valves and exhaust and oil resistance and friction in the cylinders and coolant flow (resistive). Or if you take a fixed gear spin bike with a big steel flywheel from a gym, the inertia to pedal up the generator in the flywheel is inductive reactance that will kick your feet if you lock your legs from high speed. The felt pads on the flywheel are a resistive load. A capacitive load would be attaching a spring to the flywheel that stretches and actually prevents the pedals turning after a certain amount of stretch, so only if you pedal forwards and backwards will it work.

Older non digital meters use magnetic field to read electric current, if you allegedly stuck a big magnet or put a magnet around the old meters it would slow them and cause your electric bill to go down I guess. Haven't tried it myself. But I've partially or fully bypassed meters before out of necessity on new construction. It's a general practice around here and nobody really says anything when we're building new houses.🤷

Those so-called "electric saver" devices are actually a capacitor used to "dampen" the inductive effect of electrical devices with coils such as old flourescent lights or old aircond compressor on the electrical wiring's total resistance (inductance contributes to resistance in AC circuits). If the inductive effect is either small or absent due to usage of energy-saving electrical devices or flourescent lamps being replaced with LED counterparts, then the capacitor itself will contribute to the total resistance of the wiring via capacitive effect. Total resistance R (total) = R + √(xL^2 - xC^2)

If the voltage drop across the cable is large, does the change in power factor not cause the voltage drop in the conductors to decrease? The power loss on the conductor would decrease and the wasted power would be less. Maybe the calculation of economic efficiency should be more complex.

I'm your new subscriber frm the Philippines. You are ok! Your explanation is clear. The only thing unclear is the value of the capacitor, where to connect it & how to connect it. I consume 250 KW every month. Now, forgetting all other videos and or explanations, let's go straight to the point. Would a 5 - 10 uF/450v rated capacitor used in washing machines & air conditioners achieve the purpose? Which one along that range is the best? Also, I constructed below a table (if you will), where, as I said, being straight to the point, you can fill up, based on your computations, the capacitor ratings in accordance to monthly consumptions. KW USED CAP VALUE 400KW. ____uF This, based on the assumption that the capacitor is wired in the main panel thru a circuit breaker or a fuse. Thanks in advance for the answer.

I doubt the average home would have enough induction motors to affect the PF very much, I worked in mining for many years, I served my apprenticeship as a coal mine electrician in the 1960's and it was policy to install PF correction capacitors to reduce "wattless" current. The power utilities charged my employer extra for poor PF correction. Our coal mines contained vast numbers of electric motors from low HP to large 300HP motors, later mines much larger HP's, so without correction we'd have poor PF and the utilities would charge us extra. For many years fluorescent lights had built in PF correction capacitors.

I would say that modern smart power meters may detect the existing PF and calculate pwr consumed as per formula mentioned. In contrast, OLD spinning disc meters turn cogs which moves the revolution counters depends on the number of revolutions to register pwr consumed by customers. In this case, adding a capacitor reduces current and disc spin speed, hence lower meter readings for the appliance used. It was benefitial then, but doubtful nowadays...

Electricity is charged for kW not current. It may be less or more for same kW depending on power factor. Secondly most machines designed at 0.8 pf at rated load. You can only improve it with capacitor bank

.999pf. is ideal...but very difficult to achieve...the cost for trying to reach it will rise exponentially...and equipment will also be complex...not just more capacitors... ideally today 0.9-0.93 is more realistic

Tell me something, how can a radio station, or television station transmit 100k watts 24/7 and pay the power bill ? Just sayin, someone knows something !

They are consuming electricity from the grid depending on transmitted power requirement. It is to be noted that there are different types of tariffs and there are different criteria of calculating bills. Its not that simple. This video focuses mainly on residential and industrial tariffs

If it really worked, there would be plug-in adaptors with a capacitor inside on the market, I never seen one.

Can I use a capacitor to save for my electricity bill? If yes, which capacitor does save more electricity No, you cannot use capacitor to save for electricity bill ! Why ? For this we need to know about power in alternating current Circuit. ! The answer is going to be long ! There are 3 types of power in alternating current : Active power : The active power is the real power, and it is measured in killowatts.(PRODUCT OF VOLTAGE•CURRENT•COSΦ cos Φ being the angle between voltage amd current). Reactive power : The power which flows back and forth that means it moves in both the directions in the circuit or reacts upon itself, is called Reactive Power.reactive power does not do any real work and thus sometimes called as imaginary power. Measure in kVAR.(PRODUCT Of VOLTAGE•CURRENT•SINΦ.) APPERENT Power : the vector combination of above 2 power is called apperent power ! Measure in KVA.(product of just voltage and current) Now What does capacitor do ? It stores electrical energy in form of electric field which can supply current when there is change in voltage which keeps it constant ! For ac current it reacts in ac power in which current leads voltage by 90° (ideal capacitor) What does inductor do ? It stores electrical energy in form of magnetic field around it. It reacts in ac power i.e voltage lead current by 90° (ideal inductor) Since almost all ELECTRICAL device are inductive in nature ( microwave oven, induction motor fan, pump motor) this gadgets consume reactive power along with real power which increses current In wire (real power current + reactive power current) and also reduce power factor(pf) In real power the cos fi is also indicates nature of load.for example pf=1 means there is no reactive load.(only resistive)Below 1 to 0 is inductive load. And above 1 there is capacitive load. The more the pf is toward unity the better the power factor(less current) Since electricity board charges only for active power the capacitor cannot generate or consume real power(exception are there). Thus using capacitors is useless for domestic consumer as well as commercial consumer. But wait, Since industries use inductive load it also uses huge amount of reactive power.. Which causes huge amount of i^2r losses in wire resulting in more capacity grid and expenses for electricity board.thus electricity board not only measures active power but also reactive power.Reactive power can be compensated by introducing capacitor not one but many (usually bank which operates as per power factor being bad). This capacitor bank helps in increasing pf. The electricity board penalize the industry for there pf being bad thus capacitor bank helps them maintain good Pf which not only save them from penalty but also get token of appreciation(usually a very little discount )from electricity board for maintaining good power factor. Bottom line : capacitor does not save electricity neither electricity bill. Sorry for long answer. If you like the answer don't forget to upvote !
