There's a big debate on the internet over whether language based apps actually do any good. I decided to find out for myself.

Duo Lingo is great for a complete beginner like me as a stepping stone for more serious study or if you just want to know if you like the language. Besides, not everyone wants to become fluent: I don't want to have a conversation about literature or read the local newspapers on my holiday, I'm quite ok to only know some survival language that gets me by. I rather waste my time playing Duo Lingo than many other video games.

For me, duo is especially good for languages with foreign alphabets. For example, I am learning Mandarin at the moment. Duolingo helps me a LOT more than my actual mandarin teacher for writing and reading. However, my teacher helps a lot more for conversation.

I disagree,i think each person learns differently. The key to really learning a language is developing a method that suits you, also keep in mind you need be motivated. Methods like using Duolingo could work given that you are better at learning in that way or if you are not better at learning independently then no app could make you get better.

I'm now on Duolingo for over three years. Here's where I think it's helped and where it hasn't. German - I lived in Germany from 1980 to 1986 on a Canadian military base in Baden-Wuerttemberg. I could speak the local dialect fairly well enough to upset people who speak standard German. (Germans do not like hearing rural dialects AT ALL!) It was good in refreshing my vocabulary, deepening my understanding of grammar and teaching me the standard accent. Russian - Sitting down with a dictionary I could translate two pages a day. (I'm interested in Science Fiction and Fantasy - very little of which has been translated into English from Russian). After working with it for a year I was able to have simple conversations with friends and follow the plots in movies. Hebrew - I could stumble through liturgy but couldn't read much of the Tanakh. Although the Hebrew taught is properly Israelit rather than Biblical Hebrew I can SOUND like I know what I'm doing now. Those were three languages which I already had a fair bit of familiarity with. Duolingo helped me improve on skills i already had. But on languages I had zero knowledge of... Korean, Greek, Japanese, Arabic - I hate the transliterations. Duolingo is no help in learning how to distinguish unfamiliar sounds or how to make those sounds. Scots Gaelic - i'm having a lot of fun with. But this is one of the languages for which I have no practical use. The course has no speaking component. I both enjoy and find frustrating that this is the first course that has a range of dialect and pronunciations. (Being a Canadian born in Ottawa and with Acadian in-laws, French is the language I've had the most formal study of. French pedogogy insists that there is "proper French" and mistakes - even though the millions of people in my country will never use "proper French" there is no way to learn any of the French accents that I will ever encounter in person, in music, on film or in tv.)

I became pretty much fluent in French (having five-hour long conversations with native French people) and started with Duolingo. My experience. Duolingo is great for the beginning, to build vocabulary, phrases, in context, in an engaging manner. But after building the basics, you absolutely have to immerse yourself in the language authentically. I teamed up with a tandem partner and that's how I actually applied what I knew and put it into practice, improved pronunciation, learned the colloqualisms (which is 99% of French) and most importantly got to know how the language actually sounds if not spoken slowly and clearly by a voice actor on Duolingo.

I've also used Duo everyday for a year, and although it's definitely not made me even close to fleunt, it's helped me stay committed to my language learning goals and helped with learning vocab. I supplement with italki and more structured classes, and have really enjoyed my time with it 🦉 --- Editing after watching the video in full, I loved the bit about Duolingo being more of a supplement than a dietary replacement, that's a perfect analogy!

Yoo duolingo is awesome. Not only do it actually make it fun to learn vocab, you have the tips to help with grammar, and the stories to give you a bit more immersion. I love it and I dont understand why it gets so much hate. I also think when you're a absolutely a beginner in that language it makes learning not so overwhelming. You said it right, use it as a supplement to your learning.I'm an absolute beginner in italian but right now I'm doing duolingo and language transfer. Then I'll probably keep doing duolingo and coffee break italian and then I'll find a tutor and start working with them weekly and practicing with a new source. But duolingo has definitely made it fun and enjoyable!

Before watching this video. I will say that- Everyone is asking the wrong question. "Can Duolingo make me fluent?" That is not a fair nor proper question. Everyone knows it can't make you fluent, but it definitely helps with grammar structure, and helping you build a good foundation. A lot of people hate on Duolingo because it apparently makes people think they can become fluent with it- It's weird to me that it receives so much hate hahaha

In tandem with doing Duolingo I personally learn the top 1000-2000 most frequently used words in a language (this includes any popular slang or colloquialisms). Learning those words gives me the vocabulary I need and duo helps me with how to put all of those words together in a way that makes sense. People love to complain that the app teaches you useless sentences, when in actuality the sentences are weird because it’s about the grammar not whatever random noun they use. When the app teaches you how to say “Le cheval mange une pizza” the point isn’t to remember that a horse is eating a pizza, but instead to understand the verb “to eat” when used speaking in third person, present tense. I feel that people get lost in treating the app like a guessing game instead of a digital version of the language learning workbooks we used to use

A class can teach you a language if you put some effort into it. These apps can improve your vocabulary somehow. They are good to strenghten your commitment to learn a language. It is something like with smoking. If you are a smoker and you have five minutes, you go and have a cigarette. If you are learning a language, you can grab your phone and do something for 5 minutes to revise your words.

I spend at least an hour a day using duolingo and it is really helping me. The funny sentences that everyone always quotes or complains about happens mostly at the beginning because at the beginning what words do you know? Colors.. animals.. basic house hold items.. so of course there is a blue cat on the table. That goes away later and I find when I am reading stories and news I find myself recalling learning it on duolingo.

Pretty much agree with all his points. I've found it helpful to read local publications in the language you want to learn in the specific areas you want to visit. Also, watch KZfaq videos in that language about things you're interested in,such as food, travel,or other hobbies/interests you might have. I don't need to know how to rebuild a carburetor in spanish, but I do need to know how to order dinner, etc. Also, listen to music in the target language, talk to your pets, learn to think in that language not just translate.

I do about an hour to 2 hours of German a day on duolingo, plus I watch Dark to try and help me recognise the sounds of sentences and how people actually talk to eachother. Any questions I have I look for the answers on forums, and there are a lot of very helpful native speakers out there who post great explanations of things that I'm stuck on. I'd say Duolingo is giving me the basics so that I can then take that basic understanding and go and consume German media and literature without having to look up every single word. I can just concentrate on identifying the "rules" xx

Thanks for the great info, but you can switch off the reminders, etc in your profile settings. I switch from mobile/cell phone and PC because they have different features. On phone, you can do the lightning rounds and speak/dictate the answers in much better and faster than on PC. Also, I recommend doing 1 exercise in the morning and in the evening you get additional 15 minutes for doubling your XP-points. On the PC you don't lose your heart and have to type the answers which is more effective. Also, I have changed the language learning for me German/French and also French/Englisch or in settings change your language to your mother tongue and also add the language you want to learn and set this as your language - so now your can use both with different exercises and get the total XP points for both, it does not change! Enjoy. THIS is a very fun way to get back into remembering a language you studied at school and it is a fun way to learn a new language! By the way - I teach English and German to adults and my students all use DuoLingo daily for 30 minutes and it certainly makes a difference!

I felt like trying to test Duolingo's "worth" by learning one of the most polished trees (courses) on there, without anything else other than that, and see how far I'll get. I chose French. But after a while I realized this was a waste of time... French conjugations are similar to the ones in Spanish, another language I've been learning. On duolingo, I simply guessed my way through the conjugations of the verbs, since I didn't even know the endings of the verbs and their conjugation tables, and only through trial and error got it right. (I know there are grammar "Tips" but idk, I didn't find them easy to remember, unlike colored ones or watching a yt video, etc.) Yesterday was the first time I searched the verb conjugations. Now it's seems far easier, even with irregulars- all I lack is practice, which is exactly what I think Duolingo is for :) btw I bet Duo is the 1 dislike.

Duolingo is definitely a good first step to learn a new language. But then, you have to study some specific parts of the learning process such as your accent with a native speaker and the grammar with dedicated books. So, I agree when you're saying "yes and no". Not to speack the targeted language definitively, but to begin somewhere to do it so.

From what i see, most of the people who complain about Duolingo are using the free version and doing a few minutes a day. That in itself shows a lack of commitment. I bought a year subscription on it to make myself take it seriously and combined it with Babbel and Pimsleur as they all add unique aspects. Duolingo keeps me driven, the gaming aspect makes you keep on point, Babbel is a more structured serious conversational learning and Pimsluer is great for pronunciation, building confidence & the words sticking in your brain. In short, I would say take it seriously or don't blame the apps because ultimately, it is down to ourselves how much we will learn, these are all just tools to help & they all do help in their own way if we put the work in.

Duolingo is 3/5 in my book. It’s pretty good as a way to drill you in basic grammar and a limited vocabulary. But the English is often unintelligible if you are not American, there’s quite a few errors and clumsy phrases in French (the language I am learning) and the gamification is getting worse. I prefer Busuu, it’s more polished with better explanations.

I agree Duolingo is best when used along with other language learning apps or supplements. For those who try to rate these apps, or for those who want to say this one is better than that one, I'd ask you to consider, say, learning a musical instrument. No one says, "Just learn how to read music. That's all you need to be a good musician or to be good on your instrument." No. Or "Just play along to CDs. Don't worry about reading music." No, again. Or "Just focus on scales or chord memorization." Et cetera. All of it helps. All of that benefits the learning musician or instrumentalist. Same with a given app. Each focuses on different elements. All of it can benefit you. A good diet isn't exclusively eating cucumbers.

can learn a language with Duolingo? Yes,will it make you fluent? No, for that you have to speak it daily and talk to people who speak fleuntly, that's my take anyway

I was thinking of doing a follow up video to talk about this. Over the last few months my ability to read French has definitely improved but I'm not confident enough to have a conversation in that language. I don't think Duolingo can truly prepare you for this. My improvement has probably slowed down due to the fact that I use Duolingo for a very short period each day and I don't do any other lessons to compliment it. Likewise I've been using it to dabble with Mandarin and Russian. The app has been excellent as an introduction for language learning however I'm starting to realise that there's a limit to how much you can learn from it.

I’m 13 and I live in Alabama and I’ve had the idea for 3 years that when I retire I am going to move all the way to Japan and embrace the totally different culture And I finally finished Japanese duolingo for the second time and I’m trying to figure out how I can get to the fluent level of writing and speaking

Duolingo is great for getting you started at learning a language. But its not great for getting you fluent.

I think some people just like stuff to complain about. Duolingo provides a much more professional environment compared to social media, absolutely agree with you.

It’s not for learning phrases though, it’s for teaching sentence structure. So now you can say “The ___ is a ___.” You just substitute the words from your vocabulary.

I was told you need a solid 600-800 hours of practice to become competent in a language. So 5 minutes a day for a year would be only about 30 hours.

There is no way you could become fluent just with Duolingo. If you like translation, it might be interesting but even then a lot of the translations into English are awkward and not used by native speakers. I think there is a lot of laziness and shoddyness involved in the making of the materials. What is worse, language learning in this modern world should be communicative and there is no communication whatsoever in Duolingo. Duolingo should be honest and say it is a translation course, and even at that a very bad one.
