If I may suggest, for those of us who found this talk helpful, there’s another earlier talk that touches on the same themes entitled, “Abandoning the All”. Excellent teachings. Thank you, Venerables.

Thanks venerables. From now on I'll try staying celibate and eating at most 2 meals a day, just for fun.

Hi Bhante - please may I request some advice in regards to ordaining. I live in the UK and have student debt of around 75k (payable only when I earn above a certain income). My plan is to become an Anagarika next year to improve my environment for practice - following this, it may or may not be possible to fully ordain/ become a samanera with such a debt in a UK monastery - I think it depends on what the community decide. Do you have any advice for me for how to proceed. If it turns out that I can't ordain after living as an Anagarika do you think it is better to remain a Anagarika indefinitely or work in lay life to pay off the debt and ordain (this would most likely take at least 10 - 20 years and I am currently 25 years old). I really don't know what is the best option. Any advice would be appreciated.

Shouldn't this be fine considering student debt in the UK isn't like any normal debt? The vinaya rule concerning not ordaining debtors was written in reference to a monk who ordained in order to avoid being chased up by his creditors, but the UK student loan is never chased up and is automatically written off after a certain time. I don't know how monasteries in the UK see it though, and perhaps Bhante can give better advice on the issue.

Hello Matt. It appears that you find yourself in a bit of a pickle. Depending on the requirements set by your government or authorities, you may have to repay the loan. While your desire to renounce the world might lead you to hope for leniency, it is unlikely that such an option will be granted. If you have received services that you committed to paying for and have not fulfilled that obligation, it is unwholesome behavior on your part. Regardless of any precepts you may observe, the ongoing situation will remain unresolved until you fulfill your payment responsibilities. Additionally, it is worth considering whether you have been charged excessively for the services you received. Finding a responsible and wholesome way to repay the debt would contribute to the qualities necessary for Dhamma practice in your life. Avoiding your responsibility would hinder you in the long run and have negative consequences as you embark on the path of "going forth." Hopefully, others here who have found themselves in a similar situation can provide you with some insight. ??? Having to work to repay the loan in a lay environment doesn't need to involve sensuality and distractions. You can repay the debt without those things and by abandoning those things, you would at the same time be practicing the Dhamma.

@@ThaniyoThero Thank you Bhante and @saifmohammed865. This is a UK loan and so it doesn't need to be paid off. It is payable if I earn above a certain amount but if I never earn above that amount it is written off after about 30 years. Bhante sorry to ask again but given the fact that it would be written off anyhow, do you still think this would be unwholesome to become an anagarika? I am honestly contemplating both options (paying off the debt over many years OR becoming an anagarika with the possibility of not being able to fully ordain).

If part of the loan deal is that you do not have to pay it off unless you are earning a certain amount, then you dont have a problem in ordaining because you won't be earning anything. So in such a case, you are not being irresponsible.
