Just a decade ago, clothing retailer Express was at the top its game. Shopping malls were all the rage and remote work was in the distant future, and the company's annual sales reached $2.5 billion from its about 700 stores around the country. But after the departure of its CEO, Michael Weiss, in 2015, the company began to lose its grip. Sales steadily declined and, by April of 2024, Express filed for bankruptcy. Watch the video above to learn about why a group of investors are now jumping in to save the brand.

Facts, I visited the store recently when looking for clothes for a trip. $40-60 for a simple blouse??? Pfft. No thanks, that’s excessive. I ended up getting something from H&M… and the hem has already come undone. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I’ll still rather use a needle and thread instead of paying that much for a SHIRT. smh

For me, the issue with Express is that the quality did not match the price. Selling a polyester blazer for $150 dollars when I can get a 100% linen or cotton blazer for the same price or less depending on where I shop. Express does have nice designs, but if I wanted to buy fast fashion, then I'd just shop at H&M, Forever21, Fashion Nova, Shein, Pretty Little Things, or Temu.

Their quality was so bad for years. Everything was falling apart after a few washes. I remember buying 2 of the 1MX shirts at the same time and just got a different color. The two fit me completely differently. I couldnt believe it They always did those BS sales too, where it was like spend $75 and get $15 off. But everything was priced at like $70 or $150. So it was just a crappy scheme to get you to spend more on their BS. Lastly, their dress clothes never really felt dressy….they felt like they were meant for clubbing or something. They never came off as ‘formal’.

I used to shop there when I was college because it was a way for me to get stylish clothes that were much cheaper than Armani or Neiman Marcus but over the years the inventory for discounted retailers like Nordstrom Rack, Tj Maxx and Marshall’s have improved over the years where prices for designer clothes are now more competitive so that is where I shop now. I feel like the styles of Express has gone bland over the years and the quality is no longer justified for the price they are asking. It’s the same for Banana Republic, I used to buy a lot of their clothes but now I wouldn’t even consider it.

Express has declined in quality and it is extremely behind on trends. Aritzia is a similar store in terms of clothing style and price, but they emphasize a better customer experience and modern branding

In the 90s and very early 00s, Express had great quality clothes which warranted the high price tag. I had jeans, slacks, and collared shirts that lasted YEARS (even with weekly washing). Pre-pandemic I used shop at their stores often. I loved and still do love their designs. Especially the shirts, sweaters and cardigans. However their prices have gotten way out of my budget and with inflation hitting everywhere else in the economy, it’s hard to justify spending that much money on clothes item. To add I’m working at home now so there’s no need to look good anymore. H&M is a lot more reasonable, even though tbh their quality is nowhere near that of Express.

Some of their styles are in a weird limbo. “Where would I wear this?” Too dressy for work, too casual for a dressy environment. These companies that have been around for a while need to stop trying so hard to be fashion forward and go back to the archives and reintroduce top sellers. I just got an incredible Express top but it was the last one. The fit was impeccable so I could see why it sold out. If they had more colors of that style I’d buy em up. But I’m a fashion school dropout so they’d never consider hiring me in corporate even though I’m apart their target audience. The fashion industry is so stuck up in regards to hiring people who are genuinely passionate and have the talent and drive to make much needed improvements.

Express was my go-to for clothing from 2017 to 2019. I considered my style to be "elevated basics" -- tops with an interesting detail like frilly sleeves or a sweetheart neckline -- and Express was (and still is) the best option for this type of clothing. Although they were pricy, I would always wait until what I wanted would go on clearance + an extra 50 or 60% off, and I'd stack $10 reward and a free shipping coupon on top of the discount. But between the fact that I bought a ton clothes a few years ago and the fact that I work from home most days, I don't really need to add any more clothes to my wardrobe. Additionally, something else happened to turn me off from Express: their quality and sizing isn't as consistent as it used to be. I've always been a size large at Express, even when I was 15 pounds heavier. But last summer, I bought 3 blouses from Express and the sizing was terrible for two of them. One I had to size up to an XL; the other I was in between sizes: and this was even though I was 15 pounds lighter! The last blouse fit great, but the material started pilling within an hour of me wearing the blouse. So it looks like Express has chosen the "fast fashion, worse quality" route (except they haven't lowered their prices). It makes me sad to say this, because I still really like the clothing options at Express.

I went into Express and they have a lot of nice items but it is very expensive and very overpriced!! Everything is made in China, India, Indonesia etc etc. The buttons, seams, fabrication itself isn't that great!! You can find woven and knit items just like that for way less on Fashion Nova

I know for me i stopped shopping there because i felt like their stuff was way overpriced. I've worked retail so I'm familiar with how these things work. Their styles were unremarkable and felt cheap and like i said overpriced. But i do hope they figure it out. They're a staple in American culture at this point!

Awesome video, Gracias,! I think the market is over-heated. And I am concerned that people are focusing less on fundamentals and just chanting the mantra of dollar cost averaging and driving the market higher without considering fundamentals. It is a catch-22 for me. I mean I like crypto prices going higher but I also hate buying over-priced market and ETFs. Personally, I have stopped buying growth ETFs- they are ridiculously over-valued. Dividend crypto and ETFs are a little better but they are still over-valued. There is some hope with small and mid caps. I am not sure they are undervalued but at least they are less over-valued..This pattern offers a valuable insight for strategic planning. Despite these trends, i have delve deeply into active trading and managed to grow a nest egg of around 100k to a decent 432k in the space of a few months... I'm especially grateful to Haley Eleanor , whose deep expertise and traditional trading acumen have been invaluable in this challenging, ever-evolving financial landscape.

Interesting the segment mentioned nothing about leadership post Weiss and attributed the debt to the pandemic, or about WHP’s preexisting ownership in Express before the consortium or the hundreds of workers let go last month in a state that offers no severance protection in cases of mass layoffs.
