"Collin Kartchner is on a mission to save the kids. That starts with exposing the dirty underbelly of social media and how it increases anxiety for children and parents alike.
About the speaker:
Collin Kartchner, founder of Save the Kids, is a social activist spreading education and awareness on the negative effects of social media and screen addiction." Collin Kartchner is a local internet crusader, youth advocate, and social activist spreading education and awareness on the negative effects of social media and screen addiction on our mental and emotional health. In 2017, Collin started a parody Instagram account where he posed as a social media influencer obsessed with fame, likes, diet soda, plastic surgery, and used humor to shed light on how Instagram influencers perpetuate a culture of toxic perfectionism. His account grew to over 60,000 dedicated followers and he now travels across the state and country speaking to teens, parents, educators, and communities about how social media, specifically the correlation between teen social media and screen-time addiction and the epidemic spike in teen anxiety, depression, and suicide. Collin started a nationwide movement to #SavetheKids and #SavetheParents. Collin and his wife, Liz, live in Pleasant Grove with their unplugged 4 kids and an enormous dog, Tuque. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This reminded me of once, I was eating by myself in a McDonalds and right next to me there were a father and her daughter. The father DID NOT EVEN TAKE HIS EYES OFF THE PHONE in like 25 minutes. LITERALLY. The poor child was about 5 yo, super cute, eating, and checking out her happy meal toy. After those approx. 25 minutes, the dad finally stopped using his phone, and guys, I can't describe the face of that little girl. The joy in his face when her dad finally engaged and talked to her. I'm about to cry just remembering it. Society is addicted to a drug and we are not even aware. And kids know.

Today he talked to our school and many kids were left in tears. One of our teaches who had been teaching for 35 years said that it was one of the best assembly's ever. I'm only 13 and I actually paid attention instead of going on my phone like most kids do. I related to many things he said. I loved how he was funny. And I wish he could come back again. Never before have I actually enjoyed an assembly. I always talk to friends, zone out, go on my phone, ect. I only have 1 social media platform. So idk how it is to have Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook but all ik is that Snapchat is enough for me. Just thought he was wonderful and actually taught me something that will stick with me.

I have Facebook to stay connected to family and KZfaq to watch funny and educational videos or to listen to music while I color or do other things. this is so true. i’m 14 and can agree with most of this. it IS an addiction. it’s the same neurological problem as to other addictions. i spend way to much time on my phone and i feel unsafe without it. i have anxiety attacks when i’m not close to my phone and i hate it. i want a flip phone because my phone is ruining my life. i want to have memories of my teenage years having sleepovers not scrolling through instagram. i simply want to live a life without my phone. i’ve tried deleting all the apps but what’s the point? i always download them back. it’s ruining my school, social and future life. procrastinating big projects or work that needs to be done is too easy and i cannot imagine all the time i’ve spent on social media. i want to have memories of talking to my crush, not texting and stalking them. my phone has ruined my grades over time and i hate it. im very grateful to have parents that don’t have social media because they are rarely on their phone. but because they are so clueless they never protected me from the dark sides of my phone. i’ve lost my innocence and i want it back. i’m scared my phone is ruining my life. and i want it to stop

As a teenager, I can really relate with what he said. I'm so glad my parents aren't on their phones 24/7 and I'm so glad they taught me what I know about my self-worth before giving me a phone. Still, it was rough dealing with drama on social media. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to become a part of an online community that supported positivity and taking care of yourself. I completely agree with everything he's said - though I've found great online friends, I need to love my irl ones more. I dont want to end up as the kind of parent who values their phone over their children or friends. It's so sad to see kids who are depressed or suicidal and only have social media to depend on for help, and sometimes help isnt there. Thank you so much for giving this talk, it's really helped me check myself and my choices.

I never wanted my teens to have a cell phone until they were maybe 16. The thing that spurred me to get them a phone earlier (14-15) was the amount of school shootings. I wanted my kids to have a way to call me or authorities. What a sad day that was for me. I'm stuck between being terrified she has a cellphone at her fingertips and and being terrified if she didn't have one and something happened.

This makes me feel good that the iPod nano (4th and 5th gen) and phones with slide keyboards were the in thing when I was in middle school. Smartphones and Social media were VERY prevalent in high school. I got my first smartphone in 9th grade but I didn’t get into The whole social media thing. It was (and still is) wonderful. I have an Instagram that I post to a few times a month but I don’t sit and scroll and I don’t care how many likes I get. It’s great!

I, by nature, was never a Social Media person myself. Even when I first got my phone, I saw Facebook. I didn't know what that was back then, so I opened it and as I tried to figure out what it was. It seemed like an interesting idea at first, but the only unanswered question that never left my mind was : "Why does it exist"? Like, we have phones and phone numbers, we communicate using those, so why do things like Facebook or Twitter or all of that exist? They seemed pointless to me. I was in sixth grade back when I got my phone. Of course, I knew of Facebook's existence way long before that. I used to play games on my mom's account on her laptop. Actually the ONLY single reason I EVER told my mom that I wanted a Facebook account was because I wanted to play those games on MY account. It had absolutely nothing to do with me wanting to "communicate" with my "friends" or anything. Right now, I am about to enter High School and I can proudly say that I am not addicted to Social Media. The only Social Media platforms I really use are KZfaq, Reddit and Whatsapp. Whatsapp for communication, KZfaq for fun and Reddit for fandoms and such. I feel weird (in a good way) that I didn't grow up with Social Media unlike most of my friends, but I am much grateful for that. I just want to say that everything technology-related is an extremely sharp double-edged sword. Social Media for example, is extremely useful for communication with people in far places, but it is also extremely addictive, and the developing companies are not helping by any means, by far, I daresay they are quit content with all of these addictions so much so that they are trying to lure you in with all the new things they add. Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Snapchat, Whatsapp. You don't need any of these, really you only need one or two accounts, but no, you actually don't need any. You could just send emails or messages for communications, and use KZfaq for videos. That's really all you need from technology, anything else is just like a lure dropped by the big companies, and most of us, unfortunately, foolishly get caught in it. For people with countless Social Media accounts, I have one question. Why? Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

you touched on many tender places. Today I bought a 'flip phone' after three years of struggle on a 'smart' phone. I probably am addicted to youtube in these 'covid' times. I remember my son in earlier years and knowing that something was wrong in the way I parented...found a super reading 'PET Parent effectiveness Training' and got some hints about better ways of being and communicating. it's been quite a journey, more focused on looking inside myself and growing better ( I hope). I feel more real with my son today and with myself. He's56, I'm 84. Thank you for caring and sharing the good stuff. Frances Pizzino still growing and painting pretty pictures.
