Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to put down your phone? There are hidden psychological effects that smartphones are having on our brains. Studies show that smartphone users are developing serious problems, like real addictions, and losing the ability to focus. Mobile technology isn’t going anywhere, so we must become aware of these effects so we can better use technology- instead of letting it use us.
Jeff Butler holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of California Berkeley and has studied psychology for almost a decade. After working as a Software Engineer, Jeff turned his focused towards his true passion- psychology. He has started several companies since, and his most recent company Tek Life Mastery, helps professionals conquer tech distraction to get more done in less time. He speaks at various clubs, colleges, and corporations regarding tech distraction.
Aside from working on his companies, his primary aim in life is to show people how to live more fulfilling lives whether that’s from helping them find their purpose in life or inspiring them to new levels of achievement.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I don't have a television or a computer or laptop, so i use a smartphone to watch things on, but it's very easy to just sit staring at it and getting nothing else done. It's scary how the hours can go by while using your phone for anything and everything.

My solution has 3 parts: 1) No social media apps on my phone. 2) All notifications disabled. 3) Phone permanently set to "Do Not Disturb". It's great! I get all the convenience that a smartphone can bring, without any of the distractions.

I work from home as an internet marketer and web designer. I have 7 computer screens in front of me for 7 hours a day. When I go out, I am totally unplugged. As a matter of fact, I am proud to say "I don't have a mobile phone" and I get to enjoy "LIFE". I'm not "Trapped by an APP".

I’m ashamed of how dependent I’ve become with the iPhone. I use to try to get my family to not use it so much and stopped social media altogether. Haven’t been on Facebook in over a year. But more and more I’m on my phone. With music and videos on KZfaq and I’ve noticed how dependent I was when my phone screen broke and the stores were closed and I had to go only a day and a half with out internet or phone at all and I saw how dependent I was. I went to bed and woke up and went to get a new phone. The motivation I had was as if I was on drugs. I have to do something else ASAP

The very things he says that are causing us to become addicted to cell phones, are the reasons why i don't have or use one. About 5yrs ago, i got one (even at that time, i was sure i was the last person on the planet to get one), but after about 3 months, i had it deactivated, put it in a drawer, and it's been sitting there ever since. I simply couldn't stand the notifications, and getting texts nearly drove me insane. I made sure that anyone who had my number DID NOT give it to anyone else to avoid getting even more. Maybe my body doesn't have dopamine, but having a cell phone just wasn't for me. I lived 53 years without one, and i'm quite sure i'll get through the rest of my days without one. Thanks for the great talk.

Mobile phones can be useful if not used all the time. People are being controlled by others & friends by being in contact too much by text or phone asking where they are & what are they are doing. There are too many control freaks about. Everyone needs chill out space. People are not looking where they are going in the streets because they're looking at their phones.

Ive been talking about this for years. People not paying attention in the grosery stores and even without thier smart phones, there has been a dramtic shift in connection. Im a HSP which means i pick up on the behaviors of others.. The disconnect meaning how much more often I could hear from my babies and face to face then i do now and they live hours or days away., I cut down on my notifications, hence is the reason why there is a dnd setting in the new smart phones today. Im very mindful of the world around me and not to contrdict myself here but to put out the word that i really miss my childen in the way he talks about. .

I decided to learn about smartphone addiction. So I clicked on this video and… I’m a high school teacher in South Korea. I can confirm what he said. This is really bad. The government has now allowed the kids to keep their phones with them at all times. Unlike the US, where the phones should be off and out of sight, here, no such rule. Kids don’t pay attention to the teachers anymore. I’m gob smacked every day how this can happen, but it’s their right to have it, apparently. We can’t help them anymore. They touch them all the time. They flip on Instagram or KZfaq whenever. They’re selling out their futures for the dopamine hits. I tell them to put their phone in their pockets and maybe half of them do. The other half have AirPods hidden under their hair. What can I do? If it’s their right. I wish the government would reverse this, but that won’t happen. So here we are. I’m also of the camp that kids should absolutely not have social media until their 18th birthday, especially in collectivist societies, the effects are ridiculously devastating. However for me, I keep my phone out of my class now and use it less than before. So that’s good for me, but my heart hurts for these kids…

Yes I do agree that smartphones are 100% addicting.. but the first story about the woman & her son presents smart phones as these terrible things that murder people due to lack of attention.. & even though it’s a true story, if the object was changed to something like a book, the same events would occur. I think instead of creating a fear for people, educating them on WHY they’re addicting (which this video did), would present just as much power to the statement. No hate on the Ted Talk, just trying to get my opinions out there.

Most people don't realize that. KZfaq the same way the more subscribers notifications from likes comments you have determines yourself worth that is wrong. You're self value is not based on social media likes and comments subscribers. I got too the point in life why should I give people who don't care to contact me on a regular day-to-day basis permission too look at my photos? And why places your self value in the hands of people you most more likely will never meet? It is such a shame that most of your living rooms people spend more time on their phones than the ones that live with them.

I will give you an example, moderate consumption of alcohol isn't a problem, also there are so many people that use alcohol to be less anxious when they socialize. Should we unban alcohol for teens even though is very risky for their development because with control it reduce the risk? Or think of better ways to help the socialize wihout having to deal with something risky (and in case of phones amd how dopamines work, addicitive) Why not avoiding something risky when we can have better solution like phones without internet and games to communicate. Fun fact alcohol was once legal for kids.
