Can foam Reduce the Ram Pump Sound

Ram Pumps make a clicking sound when they operate. Is it possible to add some foam around them to reduce the sound? I make a foam box and place it around the waste valve of the ram pump to see if it reduces the sound. In a future video I will place an insulated barrel all the way over the pump to further test the sound dampening ability.

I think if the valve had a rubber seal it would be a lot quieter than the metal on metal

@@travishodges5179Of course the (rubber?) seal will wear out over time, as will this foambox. But it's a much, much smaller part, that's probably a better solution to the problem. Therefore it's a much more durable solution. (If it works)

I have a Rife ram pump. Probably over 80 years old. it has big rubber washers. It is very quiet. Ive been using it for a few extended summers now. Model 10-B

A big part of the whole noise is the vibrations within the structure. The vibrations translate from the valve/pipes to the wood/blocks. If you can put some foam between the ground and blocks or blocks and wood, you might have a good start.

Has to be completely contained, otherwise all you made was a speaker box for it, try to go all the way to the ground with the covering

I like the idea of sitting the whole thing in a box and let it flood itself over so it will shut up the clacking

Mass is one of the best things for sound attenuation. What about making a box out of loose laid concrete blocks, possibly insulated with rockwool? Would it even stay warmer to extend your ram pump season?

Yes you are right! Up next I have two ideas for slightly underwater valves. That should give good results. Also using a phone DB meter.

I think if you want to minimise the noise, you should place your waterlines under ground or in water or isolate them otherwise. The bang of the ram-effect travels through the whole system, as far as I know...

What about something like spray in bed liner sprayed on the inside and outside of the foam 🤠

The sound from the drive pipe can probably only be dampened by burying it, as for the valve, maybe having a rubber ring as a surface for the valve to close against would dempen the sound.

A box with a layer of styrofoam with aluminum side and either rock wood or 6 inch insulation. What i use for my generator cut the sounds down by 3/4. Edit use stain for wood or it will rot fast.

I might put some rubber bushes as it's mounting base, just like how car engine mounting to absorb most of it's vibrations and noise as well as enclosing it with walls all over it just like car engine. The same for pipelines, clamping some areas onto concrete block with some rubber insulated clamp. A cheap neoprene sheet cutting into shape will do.

I say make a double wall tote and put water between the walls. I remember you putting this underwater and it was quieter, but the pressure decreased or it stopped working after a while? I forget what the results were. However, with this idea you'll be keeping air inside the bottom tote.
