Ich komm selbst aus Österreich und ich kann auch ohne probleme Hochdeutsch sprechen, wenn ein deutscher mein Wienerisch nicht versteht ._. In Österreich gibt es generell viele Menschen die nur Hochdeutsch können.... Also man hat dort auf jeden fall kein Problem mit einem Sprachunterschied :D

Die meisten Worte waren keine Slangausdrücke sondern offizielle Bezeichnungen. So sind etwa Fisolen oder Ribiseln auch auf den Verpackungen in Supermärkten so angeschrieben. Ebenso wie etwa Obers oder Erdäpfel. Aber wenigstens weiß ich jetzt wie ihr Deutschen zu Ribiseln sagt - also "Johannisbeeren".

Every other dialect in my country sounds mostly like chinese to me.

I am from the US and these are the ones that I came closest on: kaprize = caprice (I think I was correct enough) drahdivaberl = reminds me of the word dredel (a Jewish top) Pallawatsch = reminds me of putsch (beer hall putsch) Frittaten = potatoes pancakes. I am glad that you did this in English. Otherwise I would have struggled much more.

I was thinking of a similar word to 'frittaten' because in Italian 'frittata' is an omelette type meal which always includes eggs and another ingredient like meat, pasta, cheese or vegetables. So both are 'fried' eggs but with different additional ingredients which make them a pancake or omelette.

I am Swiss and I lived in Upper Austria for some years. I can speak Standard German, Swiss German and a bit of Austrian German. I got 7 of those right, though often with guessing from the connections to other Austrian words, because most of these I did not know.

I'm from Austria so it was easy for me to "guess" the meanings but after this video, I think my family is a lil bit weird. 'Cause "Strizzi" was always used as a nickname for a young, cheeky boy...well I didn't expected the other meaning of "Strizzi".

I am from Bavaria and barely got half of those words right. As our dialects are very similiar ("Bavaro-Austrian dialect family"), some terms are also used in (certain regions of) Bavaria, like "Putzerl" (or "Wutzerl"), "Ribisl" or "strawanzen". Others I got right because we're still very close to Austria and are more likely to be exposed to these terms than our "northern lights" (I was correct with Frittaten, sich fadisieren, Paradeiser und Drahdiwaberl). However, some seem to be pure "Austriacisms" and I'd definitely need some context to understand them. Cool video, Trixi, keep up the good work! :)

I'm Bavarian and I didn't know more than you. xD I only knew strawanzen. And I guessed that the "Drahdi" from Drahdiwaberl comes from "Dreh dich". xD

Born in Vienna...never heard Kaprize evahhh before. Gefinkelt - confirmed, in daily use Drahdiwaberl - well nobody uses this but since there is a Band named like that everybody knows the word. Mezzie - born in Vienna...never heard this word evahhh before. But just like words like "Chuzpe" (to have the guts to...) and "Mischpoche" (family/relatives with a negative undertone) they have theris origin in "Jiddisch" (Jewish) and were used more often by the generation of our grandparents and maybe parents but is rarely heard nowadays, thanks Hitler. Paradeiser - oh yes, in proud use on a daily basis - if you wanna impress some Austrian use "Paradeiser" instead of "Tomaten", "Karotten" instead of "Mören", "Erdäpfel" (literally earth aples ;) instead of "Kartoffeln" Fisole - same like Paradeiser Putzerl - well it's the "cute" version of the word "Butzi" which is the slang term for baby. Everything with "-erl" at the end is basically the cute/childish version "Engerl", "Flascherl", "Hunderl"....well except "Sackerl", but that's another story. Pallawatsch - More an old word...not used very often nowadays Frittaten - yes, since there is a soup called "Frittatensuppe" you hear it quite often Verhatscht - she said PENIS! Strizzi - often used in Vienna Ribisil - like Paradeiser and Fisole - nobody says Johannesbeere Strawanzen - yes, often used in Vienna Fadisieren - adjektiv of "fad" which is slang for "langweilig", very often used Geigeln - hmmm maybe I heard that once or twice you would say "er/sie fuhr Schlangenlinien" -> he/she drove snake lines (was all over the place ;) But you get a "Goldsternderl" (gold star) for trying!

Your first idea for Kaprize was really interesting. You know what Freud would make out of it, don't you? ;) My first thought there was "caprice". But that was my only good thought here.

Die (nachträglichen :-) 😄 Auflösungen waren immer korrekt. Bei drei Wörtern würde ich gerne aussprachemäßig etwa nachhelfen: Mezzie - Hier war meines Erachtens die größte Abweichung bei der Aussprache vom Original, sodass ich zunächst gar keine Ahnung hatte, wovon du überhaupt sprichst. Dieses Wort wird mit Betonung auf den Schluss mit sehr langem i ausprochen. Also etwa: "Eine echte Meziiiii" (als eine sehr gute Gelegenheit). Das Dopple-z spielt aussprachemäßig keine Rolle. Frittaten - Hier wäre der Mittelteil "ttat" härter auszusprechen, also nicht wie zB "die Tat", sondern man muss das Doppel-T stärker hören. verhatscht - Hier wäre das a länger zu sprechen, also mehr wie "verhaaatscht". Austrian here, I've also never heard some of those words. It was interesting that you failed several times at the correct pronunciation, but got the final "Baba!" perfectly right in my opinion - I know a lot of Germans who repeatedly fail at Baba even after a lot of practice and many attempts. :D An acquaintance told me some time ago that "Drahdiwaberl" is a concatenation of the phrase "Drah di Waberl!", where "Waberl" is a short form of "Barbara". I think he explained that you said it during dancing: "Dreh dich, Barbara!" Admittedly, I haven't verified this yet. ;) And addtionally, Drahdiwaberl is also the name of a Viennese band.

Ich komme aus einem Teil des Balkans der früher mal zu Österreich-Ungarn gehörte und der Begriff Drahdiwaberl wurde bei uns auch benutzt um eine "hyperaktive" oder sehr fleißige/geschäftstüchtige Person (vor allem weiblich) zu beschreiben. Wenn man Drahdiwaberl( oder Drahdiwawerl, wie wir gesagt haben) ins Hochdeutsche übersetzt kommt dabei eigentlich Dreh dich(drahdi) Barbara/Bärbel( Waberl/Wawerl) raus. Kennt das noch jemand mit dieser Bedeutung? Vielleicht mal Grosseltern fragen?

A 'Strizzi' (or 'Stritzi' how I personaly write it in Tirol) is kind of a missbehaved person, a cheeky child. A 'rascal' ('Frechdachs'). I never heard of the other meaning 😂 Really funny video! I didn't know some of the words either!

I am from America, the first one born on my mother's side of the family outside Austria. I only got two: "Frittaten" because in my family people either make it or take about how they want some, and "Ribisel" because a month ago I taught myself how to make Linzer Torte :-) LOVE your channel, I smile all the way through and tear up a little because I so love where I came from.

The first one immediately reminded me of the English word "caprice" which has an identical meaning to the Austrian word. After that, the top looked like a dreidel after the reveal, but I didn't guess it beforehand. Frittaten immediately brought to mind a frittata, which is in the same family of food as pancakes.

So, if "Pariser" is slang for "condom," does that mean the area in front of the Brandenburg Gate (known as Pariser Platz) could also be thought of as "Condom Square?" LOL

the zz guess was not bad, in fact most (older) austrian words containing a zz have italian inheritance, like Pizza, Mezzanin, etc.

Palatschinken: I always enjoy situations when the word „Pfannkuchen“ was not understood in Eastern Europe or the Balkan region. One of the leftovers of the monarchy was that we still can use „Palatschinken“ even outside of At.

Knowing almost no German of any variety, I only got the first one pretty much right. _Die Kaprize_ reminded me of the English word "caprice", meaning: 'a sudden and unaccountable change of mood or behavior, a whim, a mere fancy.' It came from the French _caprice_ and the Italian _cappricio_ which have similar meanings. That's close enough to "a funny mood" for me to think it;s related.

Yes, "Lausbub" comes closer to my understanding of "Strizzi") Also, about "Pallawatsch": I think it's more used in a way like "Jetzt red nicht so einen Pallawatsch!"

I live in Austria 2 years, but I never heard someone say "Paradeiser". All people say "Tomaten". But in Serbia, Where I come from, we say "paradaiz" which is so similar. And "Ribisel" also, on Serbian is:"ribizla".I don't know why.

I'm Austrian, but knew only 7 from 15 right. And as a young child, I knew not one of them. not even "Paradeiser". Because I grew up in Vorarlberg, a region with dialects similar to those of Swabia and Switzerland, not the Bavarian dialects from the major part of Austria.

How about a second round: Oachkatzlschwoaf, zuagroast, Pipp'n, oaschlings, ... :D

I am German and got (if at all) only one right. It was sich "fadisieren", I guessed that means to anti-amuse oneself or to not be amused or something like that (because of "sich amüsieren" and the word "fad") but I think that should count because otherwise I'd have none right.

Well, since austrian dialect is not unified there are several things to be said. Paradeiser for example is a word mostly used in eastern Austria, similar to "Obers" vs "Sahne". I would have rather adviced to ask a friend for an austrian dialect/slang dictionary, including such nice words as "nudlaug".

I'm from South Africa. Got only one right. Die Kaprize. It sounds a lot like the english word "Caprice". which means 'whimsy' or foible. I figured it meant something like changeable moods. "Das drahdiwaberl" looks a lot like the Afrikaans word "draadwerk", which means mischief, but in a negative, nasty way.

Dradiwabel is similar to dreidel, which is Hebrew/Yiddish for "top" (the toy)

I only got two correct Trixie. strawanzen, and geigeln. I'm not sure why I got the first it just seems familiar, maybe from when when I dated a Linzer. Geigeln however sounds like the Appalachian dialectal slang si-gogglin which means to be slanted, crooked out of balance, zigzag or all around wonky. maybe it's just coincidence or perhaps there's a cognate somewhere. das problem ist du hast zu deutsche wort-verbinungen zu diesen wörtern gesucht (die zum großen teil nicht dialekt sind, sondern einfach deren bezeichnung). die meisten sind aber abwandlungen aus dem französischen, italienischen (frittaten= frittata), ungarischen generell böhmischen weil österreich-ungarn und so (die eu in der eu)....viele verschiedene sprachen vorallem aus den (logisch) nachbarländern und weil österreich schon immer das deutsche frankreich angestrebt hat, daher eben auch einiges aus dem französischen übernommen und verwurstet hat.^^

I literally did not get the Austrian slang at all. I get some German here and there, barely- but it is what it is. I do plan to get more proficiency in German over time though to understand. Lots of smiles!!!!

I'm from west Austria (Tirol) and went to university of Linz in Upper Austria (north, half-east) - and I knew less than half the words. I guesst most of them are east Austrian, i.e. only used around Vienna, our love-hated capitol ;-)
