Can Golden Retriever be a Guard Dog?

We all know how friendly and social golden retrievers are. But can they guard us? Or are they too friendly? We will find out in this video.

Being a Golden Retriever Owner I can tell that it's not as easy as it seems to raise a Goldie. Even though they are one of the most intelligent and gentle dogs, there are quite a few challenges that every new parent goes through. So I decided to share all the advice and tips for raising a Golden Retriever.

I have a silver Labrador puppy and he is super loving, but he is also super protective! He barks if anyone comes near our home and if he feels someone is a threat to us! I believe he does this because he loves us so much! And we love him!! So I couldn’t agree more!! 🙏❤️

The scariest thing my dog does is when he meets a new person he starts licking and jumping up on them (: My floof is “VERY” Scary (: lol

My mom got an English cream Goldie, and she is our first Goldie. She loves me, my mom, and my dad. One time I was walking Lily that her name, and an pit bull came running towards me and Lily but the pit has her eyes on Lily. I was trying to block lily from the pit but Lily was literally blocking me from the pit she was literally barking and growling aggressively at the pit, she would rather put her life at risk by saving me from that pit the way she blocks me when I am trying to block her from that pit to not attack her. People been saying it rare for an Goldie to actually protects you, but our Lily she am good guard dog, I am guessing the way how she loves us that why she is overprotective over us.

In my experiences they are good watch dogs. One golden retriever I was dog sitting would always alert us when someone was at the door.

All depends on Training…. I have a 1 year golden retriever he is friendly and playful with family members … but becomes way too alert when any stranger Approaches… He is very protective , he barks , bites and even attacks when thinks something is very suspicious …. Once he saved me from an American Bully approaching towards me to attack …. And my Brave golden retriever chased him hard ❤❤❤

Once again a great, informative vid. Our Golden protects us from possums. 😆😉 He barks at them to leave our yard. Yes, the most loving family dogs. The 3rd most popular breed in our area. 👏🇦🇺

I have a golden. He won't even bark at bunnies. I worry more about him than me in any given bad situation. That being said, the most dangerous dog I've ever met was a golden who was a "bite without warning" biter and he would go after anyone, including his owners. I don't know what his story was (I'm betting it was awful and would enrage me) but my point is this: Just because they are a golden does not mean they are safe to just walk up to and pet. Ask first.

We got a Golden puppy a year ago last year. We picked her up Jan 6 ‘22. She was the only female left. We were concerned she would not settle on her back. Absolutely not. After we spayed her, we could not check her incision. To this day, (she's almost 13 mos)we've never seen her underside. We've had many puppies, this one is different. She's our 2nd Golden. The other one not as intense in general. Take your time choosing.

My golden saw somebody while I was biking with him and ran to the person, but he was on a leash. He pulled me off my bike giving it a huge dent, and trapped my hand on the handlebar. He somehow managed to cut open my wrist. He is a good boy but a handful sometimes.

Yes situation like this does happen in a golden owner's life, we experienced it as well with our own simba and its actually a good thing! This shows that your dog is aware of its environment and has that watch dog instinct in him. However its time for you to train them to alert you first and then go chasing after that certain someone with YOU beside him! I'm glad I could help :) Thank you so much!

Not too always true. Mine is 4 months old and already protective with my daughter and I . She has growled once at someone. She knew better.

My female is the best ‘watch dog’ very alert. But she wouldn’t provide any actual protection and would hide behind me. My male on the other is a guard dog. He is goofy, and friendly, but I have no doubt if someone was hurting me he would bite. He has similar guarding traits that my Rottweiler use to have and he was super friendly too. It’s odd to see in a Golden Retriever.

Actually golden retrievers can be guard dogs so don’t underestimate them, and with the proper training golden retrievers can become guard dogs. And actually my golden retriever is pretty aggressive and protective with no training and will attack any stranger that gives her a sense of danger and instead of barking at me to alert she always barks and the danger and if the danger gets any closer she will bite and attack

Such behavior is quite rare in Goldens but one of the reasons why the answer to this question was 'No' because most Goldens aren't adopted with a mindset of guarding instead they are adopted for their calm, playful, and cheerful nature😄 We hope we were of any help! Thank you for the Comment :)

I dog sat a golden doodle, golden retriever and poodle mix which are good guard dogs, she barked every time she heard something. The dog even started barking minutes before a military flyover. Dogs have bionic ears!

Golden doodles are good guard dogs imo. Mine would get aggressive and bark when the handy men would come over. However, my golden retriever wags her tail playfully and gets happy when suspicious looking people come near my house. 😂

I have 2 golden retrievers as guard dogs in a farm and i heard something come through the fence and the dogs ran to it and they were mauling a fox that came in and i had to stop them and the fox could hardly walk

My dog is guarding a toy and won't let me move, I cried the whole day thinking that my life is ruined because my dog was not even letting me enter the house. As the entered the house, he put his pillow in front of me and started barking at me. He is a golden retriever and I'm terrified, I have really bad thoughts now.

I can relate, we found out early that ours guarded her food or anything she valued highly. We love her, but at 13 mths. don't trust her with food or chew sticks.

I KIND OF disagree with this. My golden is pure bred and has in the past protected me from people and other dogs. Don't get it twisted he's super friendly and no attack dog, but when he senses a threat he will protect me. Also you can KZfaq the story of a kid who got attacked by a mountain lion and the golden saved him. True they're not guard dogs, but when push comes to shove they will protect.

But my Goldie never allows any Intruder,he barks n barks at them , he barks to the typical sounds coming from outside, I think this is one way of Guarding home n family, he even asks me to open the door telling that some one has come let me bark at him ,if I open he starts barking at them #Retriever Care .

We had 2 golden retrievers and one of them was mean and bit my mother. The other one got between them and barked at the other one to let go

Goldens usually don't bite with an intention to hurt anybody especially when the person is someone they know. You have train your golden and help him understand the difference between an intruder and his family and also to make a move only when there is threat upon their owners. I hope I was of any help! I had a golden retriever once. If there was any little baby rabbits that got into the fenced in back yard she would capture them and adopt them as her little puppy guarding and grooming them. We would have to go get them and take them to the field outside the fence and release them. They really took off and never looked back saying let me get away from this silly dog I'm a rabbit not a puppy..🐕🐇...

@ Dogs .The little rabbit was all wet from all the grooming. Once we got the little rabbit and release it back into the field it took off. Probably saying I won't be visiting this yard again. LOL. Our golden was spaded but she still had the care of attending to them as if she would had puppies. Once she became a full time inside golden direction from the vet, she developed more of a service dog traits with no training. If someone had some issues walking she would walk beside you not once bumping into you waiting for you to sit down and get settled then come and lay at your feet.. Very sadly she has done crossed over the rainbow bridge now but she never did loose much of her hyperactive she loved to jump and twist around playing all the time..🐕

If you have a gun in the house get a golden retriever. If you don’t and need a no nonsense guard dog get a german shepherd

What about a rottweiler as a family dog protection arent they good as the German shepard

@nycas 21 The only issue with a rotweiller is they aren’t as forgiving as a German shepherd in my opinion when it comes to excepting other family members like children or even spouses as alphas in the pack. That isn’t the case in all scenarios. However rotweillers tend to attach to one person in the group and will misbehave or struggle to take instructions from anyone else other than that person. German shepherds tick all boxes for me great family dog great protection dog and easy to train.

I do not agree with the content....my friend has a retriever who is TRAINED to be a guard dog....he is extremely aggressive when commanded...it's how you train one and not how they grow into
