Speaking of which, why not move over to place like Australia. About 6 million souls in Hong Kong live like sardines in a can, while Australia, a vast bountiful Colonized Continent in Asia Pacific has merely 25 million people. more at, blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=711807

@@thykingdomcome7238 History repeats itself. Remember, devastating World War II finished up centuries-old Colonialism worldwide. Likewise, would World War III, however devastating it may be, finish up global Colonization which has been lingering on from North America to South America, from Siberia & Far-East Asia to Australia & New Zealand? In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return them to rightful owners. Remember, notorious global cardinal crimes such as Slavery and Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on? By the way, thanks for, blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=711807 which is so very informative.

@@supremelyeducated3273 I agree, logic says Australia, a vast resourceful Continent in Asia-Pacific, only a few hundred miles away from South-East Asia had no Asian-Pacific Islanders in that vast land originally, historically inhabiting when Anglo pirates, some 10,000 miles away England, sailed half the world away, and looted in late 18th century? This doesn't make sense, since Asian-Pacific Islanders originally and historically inhabiting and residing in Pacific such as Guam, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii? Speaking of New Zealand, why did these same Anglo pirates, sailed half way around the world and looted in late 18th century? Why didn't they occupy beautiful fertile Iceland, right above them just a short distant away, with hardly any people there, even today, may I ask?

That Hong Kong gets a National Security law is nothing strange IT IS A REQUIREMENT according to the Hong Kong constitution written in negotiations with the UK. Macao also have a similar National Security Law, it has not have had any direct impact there. Hong Kong has been part of China FOR 2000 YEARS, that China institutes this security law now is not strange considering the amount of "foreign interference" in Hong Kong. The hypocrisy of the west in "cries about democracy" , if this is so important why did not the UK institute democracy during the 150 years it ruled Hong Kong. Hong Kong has never been more "democratic" than now BUT IT IS AN OLIGARCHY set up by the UK NOT CHINA. The hypocrisy of Western commentators like "Rob Koepp "They can arrest you without reason" well does it happen?? Has he seen Portland USA?? Kidnapping people (NOT ARRESTING) unidentified men (government agents) in unmarked cars... I say give it a rest.

Let me give you my honest thought. Disclaimer, I have lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada and the US, pretty much evenly. So i think i can give u some reality check. Singapore does not have much freedom politics neither, in fact u can be jailed and fined for anti government protest or defamation to singapore leaders... this is a fact, everybody knows this... But Singapore has always been viewed as stable even under the iron grip of its leaders... Because most people are happy living in Singapore, most day to day issues are not too great generally speaking. And look at how great a country it became today. Canada and US, both have very opposing political parties, preventing each other from progressing, they often disagree to one another. In HongKong, under the british rule before 1997, there was no election or democracy neither, everything was set in stone and managed by the UK. People made noise every so often. Lots of corrupt british leaders flourished in hongkong. So lets be clear, there was no democracy in HK prior to 1997 Fast forward to post 1997, somehow people have the perception that 1 country 2 system equals to hongkong able to manage itself entirely at lower scale level, yes, like many levels of ministries. But military wise, China takes care of it, saving Hongkong billions of dollars each year that would have gone to military otherwise if it were a true self governing city state. HOngkong also has a huge issues of housing crisis. Most low income people cant even get government housing, because government's revenue main source is from selling expensive lands to property tycoon. So there is a HUGE housing shortage. Otherwise, how could HK enjoy "No sales tax" and "Low corporate tax" and "Low personal income tax". But the issue is, poor people couldnt benefit from all these capitalism china brought to HongKong. And many politicians are pro-money, therefore pro-china. And Poor Hong Kong people want leaders to represent them, but to no avail. Hence this whole democracy issue came about. This single issue has led to many other anomosity towards china and almost forgot why they were fighting for democracy in the first place, that is to fight for a better living condition in hongkong, having your own dwelling place. So lots of protests came about. Eventually many smaller groups of protestors became violent rioters, damaging businesses, stopping people from accessing to town and road, hurting anyone that does not agree with their idealogy, u can call them HongKong's nationalists. After seeing so much videos of how they hurt innocent bystanders just because they dont agree with them, one even burn a guy live on tv with gasoline and fire, burning him alive. WTH?? Of course the police is also fed up with their behaviour, imagine mitigating with rioters for so many weeks and months, are u gonna be treating them nicely? Its understandable that the some individuals policemen overused their force, they r afterall human being. When a rioter attempt to steal the gun from a police, police will fight back. I tried very hard to understand the sentiment from both side. They couldnt agree to each other, ever. China had to step in, to end all these protests, because HK just wouldnt dare to do so unless China says yes. I can tell u this, if u r not into politics in hongkong, u will be as safe as in singapore, common discussion on dining table in public setting is absolutely fine, singapore allows u to do so too. But when u try to organize riots and democracy and independence, u will get into trouble, same like in singapore. What China and HK should do for its people, is to build more affordable housing, and control over-capitalism, poor people are suffering in hk. If you can make its poor and working class somehow satisfied, the city will be fine, everybody happy. I kept using Singapore as example, because it is simply one of the most stable city in the world. Leaders with iron fists, no true democracy, yet capitalism and socialism can coexist. By the way, lots of HK youths kept undermining people from singapore, kept calling them silent dogs... So think about this, for hongkong, do u wanna see riots everyday as businesses? Most businesses such as banks, they couldnt care less about politics, just give them money and business. So, to foreigners in HK, u r 100% safe!! And to China and HK leaders, understand the living condition many poor people are living in hongkong, help them get their own home if u wanna make them love china more ANd at last, to most hk people, i think u have been waiting for china to step in, and here u go...

I hate to say this, because I feel for the Hong Kong people who want democracy, but as a realist, I think Hong Kong is going to be fine. Hong Kong as a financial center for Western firms may non longer be viable, but they will simply move all operations to their pre-existing operations in Singapore and Chinese state financial firms staffed mostly by mainland Chinese will take their place. Hong Kong people will be viewed with extreme skepticism and suspicion. If I were a Hong Kong citizen, I would move immediately out of the country to the UK.

China's national security laws are, by some estimates, more lax than those imposed upon U.S. citizens and non-citizens alike. The U.S. is known to subject suspected terrorists (not otherwise convicted in a court of law) to torture and has made use of the death sentence for acts of treason. Right now the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, is imprisoned by British authorities on a U.S. extradition request, and is facing numerous charges for exposing U.S. secrets and war crimes. Hong Kong has served as a money laundering and narco-trafficking hub as well as a tax haven for a century under British colonial rule. For 97 of the 99 year "lease", democracy had been forbidden to Hong Kong citizens, just as democratic participation in U.S. federal elections is currently forbidden to citizens of U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico. U.S. citizens lost many civil liberties with the passage of the Patriot Act and a variety of liberty-depriving provisos authorized through the National Defense Authorization Act. Under a perpetual state of war, the Chief Executive is accorded the tyrannical authority to rule by Executive Order circumventing Congress and the Constitution. Every U.S. president has exercised this authority since I don't know when. *Context is important* .

If you really know the history, Thatcher the PM of UK that time was attempting to “burrow “ HK another 99years before signing the Sino-British joint declaration on 1984, she finally gave up becoz Deng Xiaoping the leader of China said the Chinese army can recapture HK in minutes.

This question should have been asked about a year before the passing of the new security law. This new law answers the question positively. The HK stock market has responded favorably to this new security law, as it leads to stability and restoration of freedom for the vast majority of Hong Kong people. In the past year, the freedom of the vast majority was away by amoral and cruel rioting thugs, who burnt dissenters and hit them in the head with bricks. Over three million have signed in support of this new law. The Western media are reluctant to learn about and report the truth in Hong Kong. This is an appalling betrayal of the profession of journalism.

HK is the financial hub of Asia because China's financial policies to make the foreign investment transit in HK and many mainland China's companies choose to list in HK. That's why SG cannot easily replace HK unless the Southeast Asia's countries develop to the level of China.

@@gandhikumar2956 U r right, SG cannot replace HK simply because of volume. But SG has been a great "parking spot" for money... ur guess is as good as mine, what can china's people use SG bank accounts for? haha... SG has always been viewed as the Switzerland of Asia. And its still just a guesstimate how much foreign money is parked in singapore. They dont disclose, and also dont allow people to investigate. But also nobody bother to, Singapore say what, people just listen, simply because, the people are generally happy with the government... My retirement fund (CPF) got triple in 10 years, and i was lucky to draw them out in late 2019 haha. They did well with investing my retirement fund. Ok im actually just 34, but i left singapore last year so i had to take my retirement away with me

The difference is in the system of government. The US uses an electoral college system, in China they use a socialist system. In US, the protesters are the smarter guys and the country is led by the dumber. In China, it's the dumber who protest and lead by the most capable. In US, no improvement until there are protests, in China, many improvements until there is a protest. e.g. In 2018, HK was ranked 3rd for human freedom by Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute, and the Liberales Institut at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The US was ranked 17. After the protest in 2019, HK's ranking collapsed. As such, please do not think the protesters in HK are doing right, they are actually killing innocent people.
