I read an article some time back about this. The BBC claimed they could tell if you were using iPlayer. As I understood it the only way they can tell is if they traced your IP address, this is illegal. Once this was pointed out the BBC back tracked rapidly on the claim.

Just looked in to this (JUST TO TEST) and i signed up with my dedicated spam email address and a postcode about 3 miles from me, they do not require your name or house number to sign up. Went to watch something and there it was the "Do you have a tv licence" message, I answered yes and expected it to magically say "sorry mate you lied" but it just continued and I watched the program. Think that answers the question in a backwards way. Technically they can find out via IP addresses but lawfully they cant. Plus with that many people using VPN's nowadays it would be an expensive waste of time. So even if they could get round the lawful bit They would need a court order to ask your ISP for your details court orders are not free and if the defendant is on a VPN then that cost will be put to the unsuccessful prosecutor. I don't know the cost but I presume it wont be cheap and if your a sales man you have to think of that profit don't you?

You’re allowed to watch iPlayer without telly licence, but only S4C and only non-live S4C streams. Very often, if I’ve got left over data at the end of the month, I do this. And actually, some of the shows aren’t too bad, and my Welsh is coming on quite well. If only they had dedicated channels with the same arrangements for the other British languages such as Dorich and Gaelic and whatever other ones there are.

Well well never knew this- From EO Visiting Procedures page 85 "If Computer Use is Claimed" By way of example, the BBC simulcasts all of its digital TV channels so BBC1 is streamed live and can be viewed using the BBC I-Player as it is broadcast. Therefore a licence is required to use this service. The BBC I-Player also allows a user to access an archive of programmes that have been broadcast over the past 7 days. This service is not live and does not require a licence. Thanks for all the info - great campaign.

You do have to use a legit postal code in the UK when signing up with an account. You can't make up one up because it has to be tied in with an actual address. If you have a friend or a family member who has a TV licence ask them if you can use their address to sign up so you can use the iPlayer. There is also another myth that you are not supposed to watch the BBC while you are out of the UK, the fact is people do when they go on holiday to Spain etc. They just use a VPN.

iPlayer just needs an email address to work. They have deliberately chosen not to lock it down to TV licence for some reason, so if you just make up a Gmail account for use by iPlayer only then i can't see how it can be traced to the user? The BBC don't have resources or legal standing to trace by IP. It would be very interesting to hear if anyone has been caught watching iplayer having been detected by technology rather than telling someone at the door? maybe put a shout out??

The registration process for BBC iPlayer requires you to enter your post code and house number. This is linked to the email address you register with. It should stand to reason that anyone trying to register from an unlicensed address should be refused the registration. I have my reservations as to whether the BBC would do this or not as allowing someone to register from an unlicensed property gives them ammunition to press for a licence fee through the courts. One way round this would be to register the account while licensed then cancel said license, but any such cancellation of licence should also cancel the iPlayer registration. Again, I wouldn't trust the BBC to do this either. Another possible way round it would to use the log in details of a licenced friend or relative to access the service. I think this would be very difficult to prove from the BBC's standpoint unless they actually saw evidence of you watching it or if they track IP addresses that logged in. Don't give them the pleasure of catching you, stay legal.

Good advice. You shouldn’t be watching iPlayer if you haven’t paid for a service meant for licensed viewers. Besides, why would you want to? KZfaq is so much better, as are the cheapest streaming services. Also if you watch iplayer EVEN with a false email address & postcode, your IP address will locate you like a postcode. If you use a VPN these are detectable, and it won’t be long before they close this loophole to only allow BBC Worldservice, which is meant for overseas consumption. Mainly news. You also don’t know what else is built into iplayer, eg if it can see what SSIDs are visible, you can definitely be located (remember when using your phone GPS maps, and it often asks turn on WiFi for better accuracy? ) What remains unfair by the BBC for watching another broadcaster’s content, like a communist supermarket demanding to look in your shopping bag, and on seeing anything purchased from another supermarket, demanding its weekly shop fee.

The way it could be done is as you said to run a search on the licence database to see if someone registering to use iPlayer is on it. Most likely primarily use postcode and house number for the primary match. If no licence they should wait until after someone has logged on a few times before hitting them. The interesting thing for me is how often they run the check. If they only do it once on registration or do they have the nounce to do it again when someone stops paying the TV licence. What could really screw them up is my situation. I originally set my friend's TV up for iPlayer with my email. I am her tech support. I moved away from my friend's place and cancelled my licence. My friend began paying for her own. If some bright spark at good old aunty's, picks up on my name and the change of address they might get a boner thinking they've caught me.

If they are smart enough to do that, they will geolocate the iplayer IP address, and see its licensed. Well they might get you to court and it is up to you to prove the access was not from you. That could be difficult or even impossible. A sign in with your email address will be assumed to be you, game over. Also there is a good chance the court will ignore your protests as it is a trivial matter to them and they will just nod through the Capita drone. People have been convicted of serious crime up to murder because their phone records put their mobile phone at the right place and right time. The defence of 'I lent the phone to a friend' was just ignored and for good reason. So would 'I gave someone my login and password'. No defence there either.

This is just the basic auto-detection part. A more sophisticated traceback edge security system will trace the route the network traffic is being forwarded from, and the originating device and most commercial VPNs don’t have the means of hiding this. The only reason why VPNs often work is because not all content providers have invested in the trace & block technology or if they have it’s to varying extents. In addition, my TV isn't anywhere near the aerial outlet, I have broadband but no TV package, and seldom even bother hooking up the laptop to the tv as the picture quality suffers - it's an old set. I think I'm covered but still wouldn't let any inspectors in if they were to visit. I don't trust them not to lie.

@@paulcrombie9623 I thought the same thing, then I saw some clips Chili Jon made - I can't recall the titles sorry - along the lines of goons asking hypothetical questions such as 'If you did x would it work?' and using the answers as 'proof'. Yes, if I moved my sofa I could plug it back in, or yes, if I changed my broadband package etc ... you don't have to be doing anything wrong in order for them to stitch you up if you grant them access. Just say no and shut the door seems the safest option. I wish you the best whatever you decide to do.

@@kayew5492 well Kate, thanks for your response, where my telly once stood, I have put my easel (artists easel) and get on with my art again, at least they can't touch me for that, or can they? I have to be careful I Don't paint anything taken from the BBC, hey they might even say I need a license for that too! If that happened, then I would do a lovely portrait of Jimmy Saville and post it out on all social media, saying this is the future of the BBC!

The plain answer is YES. Because it asks you to sign in that means you need an account, to get an account you need to sign up, to sign up you need to identify yourself. Even if you lie on he registration form you still need to provide an email address which can be tracked too. Of course you could use a burner email address but because its a sign up they have the "authority" to collect data which includes IP address. So you could use a VPN an and you would have to select an egress point within the UK for it to work, you would also have to NEVER log in to your burner email address without being behind a VPN or that information can be gained too. Don't get me wrong, a VPN is useless for 90% of the things they say it protects against but it WILL hide an IP address, although not windows serial number, CPU serial number, browser fingerprinting etc which is frequently used to work out who is behind which VPN so you would preferably need a notebook or something you can dispose of ... is BBC worth all that effort?

'you still need to provide an email address which can be tracked too' What do you mean by 'tracked'? A VPN wouldn't likely unless the VPN is based in the UK. 'you would also have to NEVER log in to your burner email address without being behind a VPN or that information can be gained too' Who's going to be able to legally access that information?

@@slowedreverb8089 Will they be able to get your IP? Yes. And if they did...so what? They'd need to subpoena your ISP to find out your physical address. They have no good reason to do this, as they don't know your IP belongs to an address that doesn't have a TV license. In short, they can't do anything. If they call round, shut the door in their face.

Sorry I'm replying to this 2 years later, but I have a question. I live in a different country and I'm watching BBC IPlayer with a VPN. Unfortunately I didn't use a fake email, I used my real one (I know that's stupid). Do you think that something could happen? I've read online that they can't really do anything even if they'd found out that I don't have a license because I don't live in the UK. Do you think that's true? I'm a little worried because Google says you'd have to pay at least £1,000

You are in their house covered by their licence. The licence covers usage at that address so, you are not committing any offence.

Short answer, yes you can. You could try to hide behind a VPN or fake account, but then you are pitting your technical skills against theirs and you have to hope you know more about TCPIP and the internet than they do. Like Jon says, if you don't have a license, you shouldn't be watching it.
