When people ask Kim Zember the question, “How can I be gay and Catholic?” she responds with the question, “Why is ‘gay’ coming before your Christian identity?”
Through her ministry, Overcome, (overcomemin.com/) Kim helps people with same-sex attraction overcome those desires and know they’re not alone. Central to overcoming that desire is denying ourselves, as Christ said:
“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).
Kim knows what it’s like to have homosexual desires, and encourages those who have any kind of disordered sexual desire to go to Jesus and say, “Lord I surrender this desire to you.”
As St. Paul writes to the Corinthians:
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Sinful thoughts are not sins until they lead to your giving into them, she says. What usually causes us to give in to them are their lies and false promises. Sinful sexual desires lie to us by saying they will make us happy, but giving into them never gives a lasting joy.
Kim suggests trying some things that will give us lasting joy, like Mass, community, authenticity, confession, and adoration (time in silence with God).
If you are struggling with disordered sexual desires, God is calling you to something more. He has called you to be fully alive. Do not identify yourself as your desires. Let God give you your identity.

Seth N, More to follow. I want to think this over carefully. My fundamental problem with the woman giving her testimony is that I believe it is a minority opinion in the extreme, being the antithesis of what most LGBT Catholics experience and believe. My problem with Jackie is that she is committed to an official Church teaching that does not appear to me to admit dissent or allow for its public discussion. I am taking my time in answering the video, as I neither wish to question the validity of the speaker, Kim’s, personal experience, nor disparage Jackie’s commitment to her Church, which is my Church too, when all is said and done.

So, god made some less sinful than others? People don’t have control over their sexual orientation. One of the “seven holy sacraments” is marriage. If I’m not attracted to the opposite sex because of the way god made me, then god made me so I can’t partake in one of the holy sacraments. How does that work?
@jackiehp5628
@jackiehp5628 4 жыл бұрын
Brian H God didn’t make us sinful. We have free will. We’re the ones that choose sin. Like Kim explains it’s the action not the attraction that is sin. I’m not allowed to partake in the sacrament “Holy Orders” because I was created a woman... does that make me less loved?? No. We are called to live out holiness with our flaws. Fr Josh said not too long ago at an event, “Being perfect doesn’t make you Holy. It’s never giving up trying to become better that makes us Holy.” I hope that helps 😊

If I'm not supposed to identify with my sexuality than how come 90% of these conversations about people with SSA are only about sex? There's so much more to being attracted to the same gender than sex. How about how it impacts friendships? Family? Feeling close to people? Discerning a vocation? Showing up in the world? Being allowed to serve the Church? What if Catholics set aside the topic of sex for one of these conversations and just talked about the struggles of day-to-day life as someone who identifies as LGBTQ?

Perhaps your problem is that you automatically connect sex with love and attach that to your identity. We're called to love our neighbor, we're not called to have sex with them. Just because you experience same sex attraction doesn't mean you have to make that your identity. I don't identify as a fornicator, I've had sex outside marriage, but I don't wave a flag and make that my identity. I've confessed it, I've given it to God and I'm not engaging in it, so why should I make it my identity? Learn to separate love from sex. And no, love is not love, the ancient Greeks had something like 7 words for love, only one was sexual.

I am impressed with these two ladies. Making a video of a subject that really needs to be talked about. I am so glad that you left the comments section open. I have a similiar story. I was in the LGBTQ community for over 25 years. I have walked away. I now realize I was looking for God in all the wrong places. My life was stagnant, and falling apart. I said a few of my friends I think I am cursed. Started searching on youtube for professionals that could help. I found Father Ripperger, an exorcist and all his videos realizing that I was in a spiritual battle. I returned to the Church, went to Confession and made a thorough soul searching confession. I received sanctifying Grace and received Holy Communion and have taken the presence of God within me. I feel at peace. As St. Augustine stated in his book The Book of Confessions, everything sparkles when you turn your back on God and will bring you to destruction. As we are searching and searching we found outlets that lie and make everything exciting but in reality that is the devil. The devil does not show up in a red suit and a pitchfork but is cunning and sly ways and I was taken in. I am now in my church community, regularly reinforced in my faith with weekly Mass, sometimes more, saying the Holy Rosary daily, following the Ten Commandments and working daily on improving my virtues by denying and overturning the Seven Deadly Sins. When I look back on my life now in the past it was almost as if I thought I was God. God has made my life quite simple. By guving the Ten Commandments, the Seven Deadly Sins and a whole Community of Priests who have made it their life's work to become Bible Scholars. I trust these scholars whi are real Doctorates in their profession. I am no longer a OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT TEENAGER subverting everything the Church and the US Culture stands for. God made it simple but gave us free will to either choose to follow Him or not. It wasn't until the pain in my life brought me to my knees out of despiration that I returned to my God who was waiting patiently for my return. For anyone that has gone through similiar things WELCOME HOME.

I feel such a pull to convert to Catholicism but the issue of same sex attraction is the thing that really puts me off. I just can’t reconcile the idea that God wouldn’t bless or approve of something that is entirely rooted in love and goodness. I’m not talking about promiscuous sex, I’m talking about a true bond between two people committed to spend their lives together. How is love sin? It doesn’t make sense to me. I love God, love Jesus, find comfort in Mother Mary....I just can’t understand how God can’t accept love.
@arinrumi
@arinrumi 2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem is the confusion between love and sex. Don't forget that love isn't just sexual or romantic. Love for one's country for exemple. Sex and love are different thing and sex should never, must never concidered proof of love. There's many people out there have sex without love, so calling sex as proof of love is just beyond wrong. If there's one thing I agree with our LGBT friends is that "love is love" they're right I'll give them that. But what is love exactly? Love is from and for everyone. Even the teachers back at school who constantly scold us for everything. But once again, sex is not love. Is not a proof of love, it must never considered as one. People often associate love with only three think (I think) acceptence, kindness and sometimes sex. What they often forget is that love is not just that, love is dicipline. And it is strict. Schools have rules and there's reasons for those rules, so that the student behave. Because the teachers love the student. Parents yell at their kids when they misbehave, if my mom never yelled at me who knows where I'll be right now. To me personally this is what love is.

I obviously don't agree with your view point, but we all won't ever agree on anything. That's just human nature. That said, I found the way you spoke on this topic respectful and not necessarily negative towards the gay community in the way videos like these traditionally do. I was incredibly happy to see her in a fulfilled relationship that was much more positive than the relationships she had with her previous boyfriends. I grew up catholic and love a lot of aspects about the religion, but I cannot bring myself to say her relationship is wrong. Maybe God created same sex attraction not so that we can deny acting on it, but so that we can learn to be more loving and accepting people?

Sabrina I have some problems with the bible because it’s so old and it’s all from the perspective of men. I don’t mean to sound disrespectful. I’m a practicing Catholic myself and I want to remain Catholic, but when it comes to rules set by men who could have possibly twisted God’s words to promote their own agenda, I find it hard to trust.

@@helenarosno I can understand that, Helena. I always remember, that even if anyone malicious would have intended to twist Gods word - it would not change God himself. He is our loving Father who only wants us to come home, through accepting the Gospel. If you can find it in your heart to trust God, that's really all you need (imo). I might not like every word in the bible, but I hold His commandments because I have experienced first hand what my life looks like when I live it as I wish (lying, drinking, living ungodly..) and trust me, I have really tried to ignore God for all my life (30 years) until it was the last straw. The Bible was the only thing I haven't read, but it was the only thing I ever needed to read and understand and I am still in the process. I can HIGHLY recommend to check out the series "The Chosen" on KZfaq. You'll love it :) All Episodes are free on KZfaq and they will show you the loving and kind God we have. So, since when did anybody choose their sexuality? Anytime some conservative challenges me on Homosexuality, i'd ask him/her, so since when did you choose to be straight?
@catalinacabello1460
@catalinacabello1460 3 жыл бұрын
We do not “choose” to be straight because it should not be a decision in the first place. God created man and woman to be partners and fulfill HOLY matrimony. The Bible isn’t a book of fairytales. You cannot be living a blessed life as a homosexual. Now if you are an individual who has no place in his heart for the Lord or no education on His teachings then I suggest you educate yourself before feeling so righteous about this question that is supposed to stump us conservatives. Not to mention that many of us who do not condone homosexuality hate homosexuals. There are many reasons that people choose that life. However, it is a fight for souls. A fight for eternal life. Many times it is out of love for these people that we fight so hard to help them understand that this life and these worldly desires are not what matter. I have family members who choose to be homosexual and although they are wonderful beings it’s their soul I am worried about. Not their life on earth. If you have no sense of after life and how to live for that then it will always be hard to get through to you

Corruption in the Church does not invalidate the fact that the Traditional Catholic Religion was and is thee religion established by Christ, that which the Apostles and early church fathers adhered to. You cannot condemn an entire institution based on the actions of a few. Corruption is rampant everywhere in this modern world.

I really want to share this video, but I've already failed many times to be charitable in the way I presented similar content on my social media. I'm honestly considering avoiding future family gatherings because of how much hurt I've caused specific family members who live out this lifestyle because of how little I considered their feelings when posting things on my social media. A good handful of my relatives retaliated in their defense as well. Don't absent yourself from your family. (Being religious is not a cult.) You can still love people who are using birth control, divorced, same-sex civilly married, etc., because your presence is love. Be loving in your interactions. "Preach always; when necessary, use words." With family, I never use words because they already know where I stand and we still love each other. Yes, we are the Church, but in America everyone has freedom of religion for themselves.

@@splashpont I totally agree and to an extent even went out of my way to demonstrate that I love them with my actions and asking about their lives. My family saw it as a deliberate and personal attack against them.
@reikae__
@reikae__ 4 жыл бұрын
@@laXrockera691 I don't think that's the issue. Coming from someone who has come out to their mother and didn't feel accepted: the actual problem probably lies not in the fact that you shared whatever on your social media, but rather in the way you "express your acceptance". Yes, I understand that you are struggling to be understood, but still saying that you do not agree with the way someone lives is counterproductive and can make the other feel not accepted at all. At the end of the day is no one's business to agree or disagree with other people's "life choices" (even tho being LGBT or cisgender/heterosexual/"normal" is not a choice but just who you are). My mom answered my "hey mom I think I'm not straight" saying "you still have time to change". That's not acceptance. It would be sad if you and your family just drifted away because of this, so my advice is to LISTEN and ask for simple explanations to them first of all, inform yourself on the issue and absolutely keep your mind open. Don't just go for content that enforces your opinion but rather for that which challenges your beliefs. I truly hope you will change your mind a bit and will manage to get some closure with your family! Good luck!

Not unless you eat it a regular amount, and I guess moderately exercise too. You could probably do that for the rest of your life and literally be fine, developing little if any health problems. Yeah this argument is a little weird. Sex isn’t everything but neither are chocolate chip cookies, or any number of other pleasures pursued in moderation. The framing of her not pursing sex around the reason that ‘sex isn’t the only thing that makes people happy/sexual pleasure is fleeting’ is strange since there are so many other things which if you were to apply that same prescription would seem a bit absurd.

Oh my goodness! Amen sister, and where has Christ been keeping you! I know you said you are married, but what a truly beautiful reformed soul, and related witness, you have! Keep up the God-work and know how truly thankful you made me today for knowing there is someone like you out there in Christ's family! My initial mountain to move with Jesus wasn't same-sex attraction or action, but rather substance abuse and all that came along with it, and once He finally caught up with me by shutting down all of my excuses, He pulled me out of the muck I chose to live in a made me a new creature again. What's really encouraging about that, and you, though is that we both come across very similarly in the way we express our witness for Christ. Truth and love with genuine/authentic passion! In Christ, Andrew P.S. A little tip for the remaining and/or upcoming struggles to be revealed (and healed - I like that) is to literally beg Him to remove any and all emotional memories and attachments that relate to fueling the sin in question. That allows Him to break the chains so we can participate with doing the healing work needed with Him. Then whatever it is becomes a page in our history book instead or a movie or a mockumentory for the guy downstairs to torment us with. Jesus is the Man!!!

Whatever you're battling brother, know that the victory has already been won for you and is yours for the asking with Christ! Viva Cristore!!!! In Christ, Andrew Also, don't hide of run from the pain that often comes from winning the battle. It's the old man of sin not wanting to let go and die but once we embrace and face the emotional ties to sin hE uses to keep us from killing them with Christ, then we have to offer them in surrender to the Lord so we can be resurrected with Him anew after they die. Or, incorporating the words of out sister from the video, the emotional memories and attachments must be revealed (and offered up) so Christ can heal them once and for all.
