Hey VC, for your next impossible route, you should come to belgium and do all the classics and monuments in the region (RVV, LBL, Paris Roubaix, etc) or the Flandrien Challenge.

The fuelling ups and downs were an education even for this. Ended up watching VC & Lachlan Morton on KZfaq to take my mind of the sore bones! THIS? This is just beyond. Well done my man!

I love your mindset. I was an ultrarunner and completed a couple 100 milers. I was a mid pack runner, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but when the noise in your head goes away and you're focusing on the pure primal needs of the human body, something very magical happens. I ended up breaking my neck 2 weeks for my 2nd 100 miler for the year and had 3 cervical surgeries, with a fusion of my c3,4, and 5. I lost my ability to run (or told I shouldn't run anymore), so I've picked up cycling. I'm starting from scratch wrt training, fueling, etc. and hoping to eventually get to long distance rides. There's nothing like watching a 2nd sunrise while being out in nature. Thank you for the motivation!

@@valiantabello thank you! Recovery has been good after the 3rd surgery. Still have nerve issues, which is why running isn't suggested, but all in all, I'm LIVING. The hardest part was going from something that I LOVED to do (running) to a screeching halt. The mental drain was challenging, and to be frank, nudged me into depression. my biggest learning is: take every day as a blessing, know that there are seasons in life change, and have a fallback plan wrt fitness activities so that if something were to happen, my "identity" doesn't go along with the ailment. Mindfulness meditation has been incredibly helpful too. It's been a long journey and I struggled with the losing my identity as an ultrarunner, but I found cycling over the last year and have found the same level of stoke and drive.

I've never heard anyone so beautifully describe the zone. My head is nothing but noise till 45 minutes in and then *BAM* the noise stops and I enjoy the scenery and go as long or as far as I want. Speaking of that, you're a beast. I know we all compete against ourselves but my longest ride was 200 miles ( 320km ) in 14 hours 4 minutes. Man just added 100 more miles in less time. That's some motivation to improve there...

Nicely done. My longest trainer session was earlier this year in January while training for the East Texas Showdown bikepacking race (400mi). I did a much slower pace than you, basically zone 2 the whole way and did 140 miles in 8hr22min (16.5 mph?). I only burned 3,400 calories, but I am older (57) and don't burn calories like I used to. I only burn about 400 cal/hr, but that is also about what I take in, so I basically had no caloric deficit for an 8 hour ride. I agree it's all about training your gut for that long stuff. I eat a lot of Oreos. :)

Jesus that's mind blowing. I can absolutely imagine that this is an exercise in mental toughness, because the most I've done indoors is 2hrs 15 mins, and I just wanted to stop. I can't imagine doing 13 hours. Did you not get off your bike at all? I watched loads of your vids when you were just The Vegan Cyclist and learnt a lot, and I did comment on one of your vids expressing a concern that you were too concerned with reducing your weight rather than improving general health with extra muscle mass. This is the first video of yours I've watched for ages, and bloody hell, what a change.....I actually didn't recognise you. You look really bloody good and healthy. Looks like you've been doing lots of strength work. 👌

Appreciate that Mark, I took one 5 min break to poo, and about 3-4 small 3 min breaks to move the camera and fill my bottles. As for my body, I’ve decided I want to be an adventure guy vs a skinny cyclist. So the last 13 months I’ve added almost 20lbs. I feel phenomenal and happy and have a clear goal for 24 that involves way more adventures vs chasing results.

VC amazing effort! I calculated your average carbohydrate intake at roughly 64g/hr for 13hrs, which seems light on for someone of your size and power output for that duration. The FasCat site recommends 0-120g/hr for 5hr+ rides. During my 5:30 IM 180km ride I averaged 115g/hr (90g liquid/25g from gels, bars, cake, fruit) while averaging 200W. 😢I’ve seen some of your other videos where you have struggled and often wondered, are you getting enough carbs?

BRO. You should read The Psychedelic Experience by Timothy Leary, which is based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. In it he describes preparing for a psychedelic journey (death) transcendence to the next (enlightenment), then coming back to normal reality (rebirth). You do not need drugs to achieve this -- in these epic rides, as you describe, you can bring yourself to experience depersonalization which allows you to see the world without your ego (and for example your wife as she sees you).

this has got to be the least appropriate type of bike to use on an indoor trainer. What a waste of those Cadex wheels!

The bike comes off the trainer, the wheels get plenty of road action. I use this bike on the trainer because I need the practice of staying in the TT position.

I'm curious to know how the peanut gallery feels about fueling with proteins during a ride. There are some comments on the internet indicating the body can't process, or is very inefficient at processing proteins while exercising. It feels like proteins are best when consumed almost immediately after a workout for the purpose of rebuilding and recovery. Thoughts?

It depends on how hard and long the ride. 77% of Tylers cal was carbs, 10% Protein and amazingly 13% fat. I’m not an ultra endurance athlete but my guess is you can’t just fuel carbs for 13hrs.

Hippie shit: You don't need to build a pyramid to travel out of time and space, you just need to go fast enough on a bicycle.
