In the last beekeeping video we found that one of our hives had swarmed and left. While discussing this on video I turned around and saw that swarm in the tree...
↓↓↓ MORE GOOD STUFF ↓↓↓
My past experience is that catching swarms isn't too tough, but keeping them is different. I wonder if this method that I'm trying here will make it easier to catch and keep these bees??? Thank you to Kaylee at the Honeystead for the conversation and ideas. Check out her channel here:

I have caught swarms this way but it's much less reliable them shaking them into the hive. I don't add resource frames to the box until after they are in it. The resources are just as likely to attract foragers from your surrounding colonies which will deter the swarm from moving in (in my experience). I would add more drawn comb and less foundation. Once they move in, add the foundation frames. Lemongrass oil is very potent. I would only use 1drop inside the box and smear a bit on the landing board. I would also reduce the entrance to ~1.5". If I find the queen easily I will cage her for a day or so. I will also add a frame of open brood if available. I don't know about your area but where I live in California the nectar flow is very short lived. I know the likelihood of a swarm surviving is very small, I believe the number I have seen is 80% of swarms don't survive.

Also, one drop of lemongrass oil is plenty. Too much will deter them from occupying the bait hive.

Good luck! Hope it works. I've caught several swarms but they were always some place low and easy to shake into a box.

I sometimes put a frame of open brood in with mine and it locks them in . You can also find the queen and cage her for a few days so the bees establish it as their new home.

You should reduce the entrance down to about an inch and a half wide.

Blake, I have lured them in as you are doing and I’ve been on a tractor and a ladder. I always lock the swarm or catch in for 24 hours and or always put a branch in front of the hive so when I do open them up they will see something different that they can remember and come back to. Best of luck

New video idea? What should we be doing now to prepare a Fall garden? And what are you planting?

Blake, here is an ideal beekeeping tutorial that fits your need from what I saw in your last video of May 21, 2022. "Signs your Honeybees ... by Kamon Reynolds, May 22, 2022" Good luck. PS. best way to catch a swarm is to shake the bees into a cardboard box, then find the queen and put it in a queen cage, then put the queen cage in a bee box and the cardboard box with the worker bees next to the bee box where their queen is. The worker bees will march into the bee box and you are done. Give couple of days then release the queen and you got a new hive.

As luck would have it I caught a swarm just like this with a box on the ladder the day after watching this video. How long would you recommend keeping the swarm in the box before moving them down from the ladder? I planned to wait until they have some brood, then put a permanent hive below the ladder, transfer the frames, then keep collecting the remaining stragglers in the trap and transferring them to the new hive until the foragers stop returning to the original location. I'll put a pine branch in front of the entrance of the new hive so they will reorient. Any ideas or suggestions?

You could have put a piece of duct tape over the hole in the inner cover, and saved weight. No need for the top lid. 👍🏻😎🐝
