Great video, thank you Cuckoo! I have (tried to) made a list of the gear presented in the video, some of which is no longer available. I didn't include links because the comment would get removed by KZfaq faster than you can say "travel setup". - Benro Roadtrip Pro carbon fibre tripod (no longer available but there are similar ones on the Benro website) - Glif iPhone mount - Teenage Engineering TX-6 mixer - Godox TL30 RGB tube light - Dinkum System Fleximount clamp/arm - Think Tank Photo Airport Helipak backpack (no longer available but the Airport Essentials model comes close)

Great setup! I'm frequently faced with this, as I get so much inspiration from travel, but don't have access to all my gear. Things I've settled on recently (for an upcoming 45 day international trip): Panasonic GX85, Blackbox, Syntakt, Phone, Laptop. Blackbox will record all audio. I figure I won't record voice at all, or maybe use my phone for that. I'll probably bring a small desk tripod but I don't think I have room for a travel tripod (one of the reasons I got the GX85, dual image stabilization!). GX85 can also charge from USB, very handy. Also Shure in-ear monitors for headphones, and a Tribit MaxSound Plus portable speaker.

I've been doing everything as small as possible, all the time, for the last few years. I always buy only small gear. I have a lot of videos from the last month, I'm (finally) almost ready to put on my channel. no talking. just playing. Sweet you're checking out the Lofi-12! Can't wait to see what you think of it. I'm def getting one. Love my 8bw, and xfm. Enjoy your holiday man!

Really enjoying this. Hope you have a fab holiday amigo. But that's a LOT of money's worth of gear in one pack, so, I'm curious...what's travel insurance like in Sweden? For me, my wee pack contains Blackbox, Powerbank, Phone, J-6, Boss Micro Br80...cables/headphones/connectors etc...bare basics but the freedom it all brings is the right balance for a weeks holiday. The op-z would be in the mix but that just doesn't wanna play with the BB, and the Roland works like a charm with multi-samples. I do have one trip tip; I thought I'd be smart when I flew on hols this year. I packed my electronic gear into a small clear plastic backpack, then put that pack into a normal rucksack. I wanted to carry the stuff on my back but not want the gear visible, and then at customs all I would have to do is pull on bag out of the other and watch it all sail through the x-ray machine. No such bloody luck! It all had to come out the bag...what a knobhead!

Quick tip on the audio issue: if you use Filmic Pro instead of the default camera app, you can see a audio bar on the screen and check if its capturing. Also it seems to disconnect the mic less than the default app. Its a paid solution, but I think its worth.

Yeah, cool. The only thing I don’t like with third party apps is that they don’t store videos in the photo library. But nowadays the file manager app and iCloud files is pretty good, so I guess it’s easy to get the files out of the app.

Filmic pro has the option to store video in the film roll, but just this month they transitioned to quite an expensive subscription model, and if you haven't already bought it before this date, you can't get the now 'legacy' version. But you can also wait it out: forced by the EU Gatekeepers law/act/decree, Apple is now already in the process of properly opening the camera to third-party developers, which means it will be a trillion times easier and cheaper for developers to develop professional camera apps

Have a look at the roadworks phone clamp. It has 3 tripod threads one at the bottom and top and back. With the thread at the back you could have your mic straight under the phone. Maybe with a tiny magic arm off-set it so it doesn't bother the camera ^^ It's not as practical to slide the phone in/out, that phone clamp you have there looks quicker and easier to use. But it can hold it firmly too, just need to spend time with thumb screws ^^' Neato setup :D

One extra minor “trick”, is once you’ve set up your recording area, dangle cotton from the iPhone clamp, and cut it or mark it at the desk. Go away for a while… come back and hopefully it’s not moved, which means you won’t get a “slow droop” over the length of the recording. 😅

Cool, but this is if you have no clothes. Which is never the traveler case. Sure, a hack is to wear all clothes you want in the cabin with you, but still there are things you want in the backpack. And if you have Teenage Engineering gear great, it is super compact, but not everyone 's taste. The light seems great and i use Analog Cases too. If i have to do a flight now, i have a mid-size Veneer table tripod which is great and much smaller than yours, would use my Roland R5 for my voice, not sure what mixer. I often dont record voice and do a daisychain to the R5. But i use old small gear - korg kaosspad 2s and the second small kaossilator OR sp404sx. Been thinking to upgrade a bit, but not yet. All this i would record with an old Nikon AW120. A new Gopro would make the setup lighter. Or probably i could go with a bigger groovebox as my other setup is smaller and lighter. I prefer to find a bigger tablespace and save on the tripod size, thus making more room for the synth gear. And some basic necessities - some more clothing or stuff

great video & perfect timing for travel - I feel like I'm always struggling to manage packing/overpacking lol. question - did you also feel like the op-1 field bag was snug, a bit too snug? My power switch got turned on in-transit and I worry a bit about the knobs. I stuff a shirt in there when not in use to try and make more room, but curious about ur thoughts 'cause I saw it in use. cheers!
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah the struggle is real. I think for tighter packing I would use a hard case for the OP-1 field. But even there, the power switch might be flipped unless it’s a really tailored case. And I always put the power switch up towards the opening, of the field case where I feel you can get it a little more fluffy.

They will recognise most of it as music electronics and camera gear. They're very used to photographers carrying their gear. And any gear with batteries must be carried on anyways. The best is to arrange it so that it is easy to open and reveal everything, with no nifty, hidden compartments.
@Herfinnur

I've done many iterations of this, but the problem I can't solve is finding a backpack that's big enough, easy to organise and that makes it easy to both remember where things are and back and unpack. I thought the Nomad would solve everything, but though it's very customisable, the side openings are just too cumbersome and the laptop pocket is too tight. Does anyone know of any books or online courses that teach backpack design and production using (and procuring) the sort of high tech materials used by these manufacturers?

For the price of the TX-6 mixer alone, I bought my Livetrak L12 mixer/interface ($300 used), P-115 digital piano ($400 new when they were about to introduce the P-125), my headphones (DT990, a little under $200 on sale new) and my reverb pedal (Ventris, $300 used, back when it was a pretty new pedal). You could fit it in a backpack... a comically oversized backpack. They'd have a good laugh, at the airport check-in. Still, all that gear for the price of TE's tiny mixer/interface. 2 pieces were used - I got a great deal on the Livetrak (and I knew for sure it wasn't stolen) but accounting $300 for a reverb pedal isn't exactly "cheating" this exercise, even though I bought it used. Having said all that, if you want a very compact set-up while using your phone to record both video and quality line-in audio from a mixer... you'll have to pay a premium. I gotta give TE credit for being able to make functionality as small as possible yet still usable. In some cases barely manageable, such as having to alternate the cables in the TX-6, so that they'd all fit... but in the end, yes, fully usable. Jeez, I'm writing books in the comments today... that tripod seems really great.
