2 ай бұрынAnother retro repair... 1991 was a great time for video games and also budget handheld devices for us poor people who couldn't afford Gameboys.
I bought this off eBay for £7.99 boxed but no cards or instructions. It was listed as 'doesn't turn on'.
But we can repair it and go one better, get it playing and using a barcode from the most unusual source... my ARM?!
The Barcode Battler was a forerunner to Digimon and Pokemon. If you were lucky enough to be Japanese you could even link it to your Famicom or Super Famicom!

As someone growing up in the early 2000's, I knew a kid who had this thing and I had no clue what he was doing and I think neither did he. Remember that this was during the time where most of my friends had a Game Boy or if you had some rich parents you might even had the Game Boy Advance! Nothing like a stranger on the internet to remind you of better times and giving a nice demonstration as well!

Haha glad to have reminded you :) I reckon my experience wasn't actually how it was in the rest of the West, but I remember all the kids at school were going on about how cool it was and that they are getting one for Christmas, I already had imagined scenarios where I'd ask my parents to cut out barcodes from boxes and being told no, so although I wanted one I knew I'd never get one. Christmas holidays came and went and in January, NOBODY mentioned their disappointing presents. One kid brought his in, nobody understood it and then it got confiscated by a teacher anyway haha 😂

Yes! I heard about that when researching this, there were a few others as well, which is odd as you'd have thought they'd have learnt from the OG BCB haha.

There was a very similar toy that came out in the mid-late 2000's that, iirc, did actually get pretty popular (at least here in the US). I believe it was called either "Code Skannerz" or just "Skannerz". Also the word "Skannerz" may have also had an "A" instead of an "E" but regardless it was definitely spelled in that stupid way.

Yeah! I read about them. I don't know why they did that after seeing the flop of the BCB, although the scanner is much better, it didn't require you to cut the barcode out of everything, you could just swipe it over, if only the original BCB had that, who knows how much better it would have done! Also having bitmapped graphics instead of just boring numbers probably would have helped, but this was 1991-1993 I guess :)
