Barely had set up camp on the rim of Owyhee and had a huge freak wind blast catch my 180 awning...ripped the stakes out of the ground and bent the thick brackets 90 degrees putting the awning straight up in the air looking like a huge sailfish! Freaking out...I tried to bend it back like and didn't get anywhere.. finally succeeded in getting it folded back up at least. I didn't film any of it.

You really hit on the most difficult part of being stuck. At least for me. I'm quite well prepared and rarely alone but still get stressed out even after years of playing in the snow and dozens of times being stuck. If you've prepared well, just calm down, trust in your preparedness, and work it out. If you can let the stress go, it becomes fun.

I got stuck in snow yesterday outside of Riley, OR. I was tired, it was late in the day, and no one was around. I saw several flipped big rigs and passenger cars off the side of the highway and figured tow companies would be busy until June. The tires were just spinning and the factory rear locking diff was doing squat. I took a few minutes to work the problem instead of rushing and making things worse. I was afraid the drive shaft was lying in the snow but I wasn't that deep. Close though. The first attempt with the boards didn't work. Second go round I really dug deep in front of the rear tires to get the boards as close to the tires as possible. After a few seconds of spinning, the tires got traction on the boards and I was able to power up and out. Both the boards broke in two during the exfil but that's what they are for. I'm thinking of two sets, one for the rear tires and one for the front to help pull forward. Nice job Donald!

The best part of snow is when you do get stuck it’s not like being stuck on a rock or in the mud , with a little time a shovel and traction boards you can eventually get out and realize how much work shoveling is lol but with the winch you can winch yourself forward up on the traction boards so you can easily dig the snow out from under the rig . Pnw snow packs down solid in a hurry so it’s real easy to high center and loose traction , not like that soft fluffy powder stuff you can just bomb though feet of it in a passenger car . Also rear locker with a empty bed is essentially almost worthless when you get something on the bed again you will notice the locker is more effective with a little more weight on it .

PNW snow is brutal. I found a good way to avoid this situation is to set up the turn best I could so I got stuck backing rather than going forward in the turn, so I could winch myself forward. But those maxtrax sure did the trick... maybe I should get a set

This is definitely something I wish I had thought through. The truck was driving so nice in that snow that it didn't begin to occur to me I might run into trouble trying to turn around...I just pulled off into that opening without the slightest hesitation, LOL. Lessons learned for sure. :-)

If you don't have traction boards and tree limbs are available,,,,, breaking off dead tree limbs or sawing off live branches and stuffing them under your tires will work. It's worked for me. Always carry a shovel!!!! That snow also looked really wet. There is a huge difference between driving on cold, frozen snow and heavy, wet warm snow. Just waiting until after dark and temperatures drop can improve conditions enough to drive yourself out.

"Cat", here! During my 41 years of rving, off roading and overlanding, I have found what I belive is the simplest mod to help from getting stuck in snow. During snow season, add a 3"x3" or 5"x5" steel angle a few inches wider than the outside dimension of the front tires in width as far forward underneath on the frame or frame forward extension. And lifting the rear most underneath element that might "catch" snow 6" or more, If possible, higher than the added steel angle at the front with any workable device or system. Why, you ask? The front angle, as the lowest snow catching element, will clear off the top of the snow and prevent the primary cause of lose of traction. An ever increasing diameter of snow balling up underneath the vehicle removing the weight of the tires to the snow balling up and the inevitable loss of movement!

My MaxTrax live in my car in winter; they're amazing in snow. I wonder if Donald tried to use them to get over that final lip back onto the road -- @softroadingthewest can you comment on that? I feel like on the side where you were off-camber and sliding down they might've worked if they were laid down end to end.

Add 2 bags of cement to the back , or gravel , concrete block or a 100-150lbs of weight works wonders in the snow.

Misadventures make for the best content (at least when everyone makes it out okay). Thanks for sharing! As we said on Instagram having four boards makes a huge difference over two. Also rocking the vehicle away from the boards first allows for a little more of a run up to get on top of them.

Last year I got stuck in a couple feet of snow up in the hills of Southern Oregon and It was hard as a rock. The snow shovel was just not cutting it but luckily I always carry mining tools. With a pick McKloskey and spud shovel I was able to dig out. I also used a rock hammer underneath the vehicle to loosen the snow which was more like ice. 10 minutes after I got unstuck and was on my way back to the main road I passed a tow truck coming up the hill who was there to get someone else out. LOL. Now I carry traction boards which could have saved a lot of digging that day.

This is the reason I mounted my winch to a front mount receiver hitch. I can pull the pin and move it to the back receiver hitch in minutes. Also have the power ran under the truck along with my air lines. Easy peasi.

Thanks for filming your predicament and recovery. As you narrated your options it was like thought bubbles popping up for us viewers. In the upper snowy upper midwest I keep a cheap full size snow shovel on hand in the winter to more easily move more snow out out of the way; I still keep the baby shovel for under vehicle and stubborn digging when needed. HNY!

Tire chains. Over the years they've gotten me out of tough spots in snow, mud and sand. Once I used them on all 4 wheels in an ice-under-snow situation.

One time in my CJ5 we got a running start to go down a road that wasn’t maintained during the winter. We only got about 50 yards down the road before we floated up onto the snow whit all 4 wheels off the ground. We had to shovel out all the snow underneath the vehicle to get the tires back onto the ground. Fun times. Lol. To lock your gear check out the BOLT brand locks. They learn your vehicle’s ignition key so you won’t need any additional keys and you’ll always have the key for the locks.

It's a good thing you had all of those options to try in this situation, though I would say that in a situation like this usually time is against you. I've had snow freeze into a block beneath my vehicle because I decided to wait. Now I always get right to work on digging the snow out from under the vehicle. Even if that doesn't free me up, at least I don't have to worry about literally getting frozen in place. It may not have been that cold there, but probably something to keep in mind. Another great video as always, sir!

Great video, to point something out on the safety side , keep your fingers away from that winch line when spooling it back in. Can loose a gunfire quick. Your getting better at all your recovery efforts!

cool video. I dont have maxtrax here in England as way out of my price range. I have a couple of mud track boards like your old ones, and still got to mount them. I watched the 3 min video as not seen that before. I have some long waffle boards also to aid recovery. No winch until i get a bumper and got the cash. Hope to have a night away again soon in my 4x4

I went through a similar experience on a solo trip two years ago. Late fall, no snow. Volcanic ash...The Panum Crater area south of Mono Lake, CA. Driving through, all of the forest service roads leading off. It looked like a giant Japanese Bonsai garden. This stuff was like milled flour... absolutely bottomless. Pulled offroad to explore and eat lunch... Three hours later... finally back on blacktop. A lot of truly valid points, "When in Doubt, Back Out".. Stay in the wheel tracks...Don't try to turn around...I did the branch piling thing to get my truck up on the dubious packed roadway. No Cell Signals.

Looks like a good experience for you to get unstuck by yourself. I have used the "block and tackle" method, using my winch, ropes, and pulleys. My suggestion is to get some extra ropes and do some drills. There are moments where I knew I could turn the truck around, and there are moments in the video where I wish I could jump in and help. Great video, though.

All those years of not getting stuck! Ha Ha Ha!!!! It's just like me. You make your vehicle more capable and for me I think it makes me want to try harder things. When our trucks were more likely to get stuck I was more careful but now with the wench and traction boards I push it more. Then I get stuck. That's what we wanted though is more adventure. Right? For me yes but it makes the heart beat faster.

Donald I haven't seen any of your videos in a while. Yeah I must say it doesn't matter how good of a 4x4 you have sometimes. I've been stuck at spots that I couldn't believe and in snowy tree areas they tend to fall more to leave obstacles. Good video buddy I carry my traction boards just incase in the forester when I feel it's a possibility of needing them.

I hate to add my two cents but here it goes. Trucks are well for a lack of better word ass light. Even the best four wheel drive systems struggle in snow in trucks. Its to late now but next year try adding at least two, fifty pound bags of sand in front of the rear wheels one on each side. This will provide the truck with some much needed down force in the rear which it now lacks. It provides ballast it serves no other purpose for one it will most likely freeze like a rock right to the bed. I used them for years in my F 250 which was just two wheel drive it made all the difference to that truck which could barely move when it snowed. Mine where a hundred pound each at least. Fifty each should work for you. Good video as always.

In a pinch, just shovel the snow into the bed till she shows some squat. You can always remove it later.

Anytime you are out there alone and something like this happens, the first thing to do is just what you did: sit down, take a deep breath, and think your way through the problem. It's probably one of the toughest things we tried to instill in the chain of command in the military. Calm down and work the problem. Re-evaluate and work the problem some more. Eventually you will find a solution. Of course, the best solution in these type of situations is to not travel alone, but sometimes that just isn't an option. One of the best things you can do with your vehicle is to practice getting stuck. Sounds odd, but after getting deliberately stuck, and working yourself out of it a few times, you learn what your vehicle can do and what works to get you out. Get a few friends together and go spend a couple of days getting stuck and recovered. It will make good campfire stories for years!

I just purchased an 06 Jeep TJ. It doesn't have a wench yet and I do intend to get one. You situation is why I am leaning towards a hitch wench and receivers front and rear. Still only the weight a a single wench, but the also the ability to go forward and backwards.

You should get a descent square show shovel if you want to Play in snow. IT would be easyer to dig you Out.

I don't know if it will work for snow, but here it goes. I have a lot of experience on dirt roads, specially on rainy days. I get stuck all the time. Where I live, within my family, we call it "hamacarse". There are several translations (hammocking, swinging, rocking), I really don't know which goes best. The maneuver goes like this: alternating going forward and backwards as fast as you can until by sheer momentum one gets dislodged or unstuck. Takes practice, but usually works. I hope it helps someone. salutations.

Many already mentioned chains. (Lots of other good advice here as well.) Pros and cons, etc. But if you do decide to carry a set of emergencies, Les Schwab has a deal where you can return a set of unused chains in April. I try to avoid snow wheeling at my age but in the past I would "purchase" a set of chains from LS, keep them with my recover gear and since I never ended up needing them I take them back in April for a full refund. And they type they have are very easy to put on. As for snow wheeling in Central Oregon (I live in Bend) the snow can be surprisingly difficult. The problem is the ice layer that builds up under the snow and doesn't go away until late Spring. It just never melts. And it is not only the dirt trails. There are a number of paved roads throughout Central Oregon where they don't do winter maintenance. Eventually they become rock-hard tracks of ice. Often one pair of tracks for a 2-way road. And then there is the wisdom of not going out solo in these situations.

Been there done that. Stuck alone. One hour digging and nothing to winch to. Finally out and someone showed up 😂

I'm surprised you don't have tire chains. We had a Ford 2wd truck on the farm and with chains and weight in the back we went through snow and mud.

I love the content, good job filming! One thing to add, please please be careful around those winch lines. The 16:45 spot in the video gave me PTSD as I lost the tip of my middle finger with a winch line. Right hand on the button, left hand handling the winch line, pinch… technical term was de-gloved. This video made my finger start throbbing. Be careful out there, thanks. ❤🇺🇸

Can you clarify? I thought I was supposed to guide the winch line neatly back onto the drum so it doesn't pile up all in one spot? I didn't have a death grip on the line, just loosely guiding. How do you guide your line back in?

@@softroadingthewest Hey Donald after rewatching it a couple times looks like you did just fine. On first watch it looked like you had your finger hooked behind the line as you were guiding it in, I may have looked away. I’ve nearly lost a finger and injured two others doing daily tasks at work that I became complacent in and have seen a lot of other folks get finger injuries first hand so I tend to be pretty quick to flinch away from stuff that looks like it could be near misses.

@@softroadingthewest I’ve had the best luck keeping tension on the line (pulling hard by hand) while it is spoiling in. Once it gets close, 12”-15”, I would hook the end over the loop and spool it in slowly (bumping it in). When spooling in, you definitely want the line organized on the drum, but if you are at the end of the line pulling weight on it, all you have to do is watch where the line is on the fair lead. You can also stop pulling line in and go up to the vehicle and check. I hope this helps, love your videos, just don’t want ya to end up like me. 😉

Hi Donald. Long time watcher, first time commenter…. Great videos and wondering if you would ever take some time to do a video about your videography experiences, how do you decide where to place cameras while trailing. How much extra time you allocate toward placing cameras and then running back to remove them, how long you spend editing and things like that. Just a thought, thanks for the great videos and narrating. I caught a glimpse of that during one of your videos in a group trailing and camping trip which grew my curiosity. Currently in Hawaii and believe it or not, I can’t wait to get back to the mainland to get back on some better trails and better camping. spots

If only one of us at camp had thought to call out to you because we joked that maybe you were stuck and calling out “help” over the radio. 🤦🏻‍♀️ This was stressful to watch (been there!). Great video.

Honestly at that distance and with the hills and trees between us, I don't think the radios would've heard each other. I mean, I tried it anyway just in case, but didn't expect that to get me anywhere. Plus no one knew exactly when I would be coming in, I could've still been in Eugene for all you knew. 🙂

I think I will add a snow shovel for winter travel (the regular shovel worked ok). It may help to remove some excess snow or even build a turn around 'pad'.

Long handled square nose is in my truck all winter. Long handle easily reaches under truck when high centred. Square nose makes great cutting edge/scraping edge vs round nose. Also holds enough snow but not too much. Spray a little wd40 to keep snow from sticking to steel.

An aluminium square nosed medium "seed shovel" is SUPER NICE for snow. I do carry 4 tire cables, and 4 tire chains in ALL seasons.

Haha, any longer than that I'm worthless for the rest of the day. My naps are really more like rebooting the computer. Even if I lay awake for nine minutes and sleep for just one minute before my alarm goes off, I feel suddenly refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the day. :-)
