Can I Locate The Street In This Harrowing 1980's Public Information Film? [GEO DETECTIVE #21]

Geo Detective is back again and if my patience in the last one impressed you then get ready to be even more impressed.
Still a bit traumatised from the Haiti journey, I'd hoped that a moving picture would take less time to find, especially one in Britain. I was wrong. Join me as I attempt to locate the street scene from an unnecessarily disturbing public information film about litter, battling demolished buildings and ever so confusing shopfronts. My only failure in this series was in London way back in Episode #3. Surely we couldn't have a repeat of that, could we?
This one took a great deal of time and effort to make - please drop the video a like if you enjoyed it - t really helps the channel!

Update: it seems that for this video they actually altered some of the lettering on the signs! The “ME” in Mecca was changed, and Denny’s was actually “Gerry’s”! which was a curtain shop on East Street. They clearly made that D into a G though to avoid accidentally advertising the shop. What bad luck!

Also the bus might have been out there to « Londonify » the place but it does not mean it was an actual bus path. Altering the true brands identity in the 80s was common and was called making a « Greek » version. At least in the US that was the trend

This is a bit off topic but thank you so much for making me aware of the British Newspaper Archive. When I was a child I was told my granddad found the missing airplane window from British Airways Flight 5390. I could have sworn my mum had a clipping with him posing with it but I could never find it. After quite some time searching online, I have now found it almost immediately with the help of the BNA! Thank you again!

Be careful about deriving too much information from things like buses in videos/photos that have been staged. There's absolutely no reason there would have to be a bus route through that street, or that it even had to be in London. They would have to rent that bus for the shoot, and if they'd done that they could have rented any old bus and drive it to any old place. Best course of action would be thinking about which road would be practical for them to close down for the shoot. Streets that host markets are a prime location, because they are often closed anyway.

Been watching your channel for a good few days now after a recommendation from Gavin of The Slow Mo Guys, he mentions you on his podcast, F**kface. Weirdly, I realised in this video that when you finally figure out that the gallery is in fact a Mecca bookmakers, the very first one you find is in West Wickham, Beckenham, which just so happens to be the exact bookies which my late Grandad used to run, alongside his brother, my Dad and one of my uncles as various staff members. It used to be an independent bookies by the name of James Lane, before it became a Mecca, then Ladbrokes and finally William Hill, according to my Dad. A very strange but insanely cool little Easter egg for me!

back in the day in sweden, there were informational videos like these about how to deal with trash at the beach or the coast. instead of littering on the beach, you were told to put your trash in a bag or box, fill it with stones, take it out in a boat and throw it into the lake or the sea! because if it's at the bottom of the lake, it's basically gone forever, right..? genius! it's literally just like sweeping the dust under the rug - out of sight, out of mind. crazy :D
@mytube001
@mytube001 7 ай бұрын
To be fair, most things people would throw away back then were pretty harmless. Glass bottles, cardboard, metal cans. The metal cans would rust away in a few years, the cardboard would dissolve and the glass wouldn't harm the life down there in the quantities you could expect. Trash today is mostly plastic, which is a lot more harmful. It was also quite pragmatic, as taking the trash back home already wasn't being done. Dumping it into the sea, making sure it would sink, was better than the realistic alternative - trash left on the beach or a rock.

Appreciate just how long this took and with such great effort, but honestly Tom this content is the best. Sure we like the easier photograph geo-detectives, as i'm sure you do too! But the pay-off with something much more challenging like this is far greater. Would happily watch many more of these but appreciate the huge toll it must take on you man!

This is so nerdy, but I love it. On a much less impressive scale, my mum and I do this whenever we see aerial shots of London (or other destinations we’ve visited), or shots of London buildings on tv. It takes us so long to watch things 😄

Oh sorry, I could've told you it was Mecca bookmakers within about 3 minutes! It was funny when I saw you view the same images. But fair play, you took it to another (few) levels! Stunning work sir!

This is just down the road from me (but I still didn't guess it!). The big square building in the background is likely the Heygate Estate, built in the 1970s and demolished from 2011, located at the top of Walworth Road at Elephant & Castle

hey tom, long time fan since early geoguessr days! a tip for google searching: if you're looking for something that shares a name with something else more common (like with denny's being a huge american chain), you can add a minus sign (-) after your search term followed by the term you want to eliminate. ex. denny's london -american. if the term you want to eliminate is more than one word, make sure you put quotations around it! ex. denny's london -"american diner" lots of appreciation for the channel, from a library technician

To be fair, the title about litter killing you was the KZfaq title when it was posted, not the stated title of the original video. On the screen it just says Keep Britain Tidy, which has been the slogan for decades. Public service announcements are best when they're a bit shocking, like the US anti-drugs ads ("this is your brain on drugs'", close-up of eggs frying in a pan) in the 1980s.

Commenting before I've seen it all: If I know 70s-80s broadcasters, they wouldn't have gone far. It's probably near a BBC office or the production company responsible for these sorts of films etc. As an adult I lived for a while near Marienlyst in Oslo where the public broadcaster was for a long time, and I constantly recognized places from old TV productions from my youth!

Oh my God I've been there, and I don't even live in London haha. Fair play for finding it, this looked so difficult. My instinct on seeing the video was that it was South London but I didn't recognise the street, and I would have said it was a bit further out of the city.

I'm old enough to remember that in the USA there used to be what were called "city directories". These were put out by a private company and had a street index and listed every business and residence by street. They also had an alphabetical index of the whole city by business or resident name . I'll bet there was something similar in the UK.

Great entertainment for me Tom as I was trying to work out how you would deduct where it was. Having lived in South London for over 35 years I had my suspicions it was East Street within 10 minutes. A quick check on Google Maps and I’d confirmed it within 20. The giveaway for me was the 1950s row of shops on the left, set back from the pavement. Some clues for you for next time: - Post-war buildings like the shops suggest rebuilding after WW2 Blitz bomb-sites; therefore Inner London; - Cream-painted gates on Right looked like re-used WW2 stretcher frames - common in South London; - not in this, but pale blue/black base street light poles = City of Westminster; - Ignore bus maps: yes it’s a London Routemaster bus but too many films have them drive down roads which are not bus routes. Finally, I’m of an age which easily recognised the Bookies, sorry! Next time try asking some older relatives or friends?

I'd have gone with the line of thinking - If William Hill took over Mecca then perhaps that bookies is now a William Hill. A list of all current William Hill branches shouldn't be difficult to find. But he didn't really do that, the closest he got was a list of closed Meccas that were too close to existing William Hills. But surely there were many more that were simply converted to William Hill. OK there wasn't in the end but it would have been a good way to go.

I love Geo detective videos and on this one please don't feel embarrassed because I live close to East Street and I do go to this market fairly often and I never recognised it from the no littering video at all. I correctly guessed it was mecca early on because I'm old enough to remember them but with your insistence upon the tall building in the distance I had at one stage believed it to be on Uxbridge road as I often pause your video ad try to find it. Anyhow, you solved it and I was flabberghasted when I realised how close it was to me! Well Done
