Can you locum as a Foundation Year 1 Doctor in the NHS?
Yes - sort of. In this video I explain how locuming works for FY1 doctors, as you absolutely can do it, but it needs to be through the internal staff bank and there are some restrictions.

Great stuff Ollie! Definitely definitely negotiate your rate guys. You are doing out of contract work and should be renumerated appropriately. If no-one takes the role internally, they have to go to agencies, which costs the hospital wayyyyy more. There is room to negotiate and don't accept bullying! I have done AHP roles at £45/h at the weekend which I would consider lower intensity than the work of a doctor Not to mention, by accepting lower rates you are effectively reducing the bargaining power of all your peers

As a Band 2 HCA I have been paid £25 on Sunday and Bank Holidays. The work is definitely much much lower intensity than a doctor especially when you’re taking responsibility for patients vs just helping the medical team. Therefore £35 is very low and you could definitely negotiate a higher price if in areas like London. I plan on doing this as a doctor because I have heard trusts guilt tripping the doctors when demanding mroe but it is our right to ask for more and we should.

Just be aware if you're wanting to work in London that the locum rates are significantly lower owing to supply and demand - loads of doctors per capita in London relatively speaking. It's your rural DGH that will pay through the nose for doctors.

Hi Dr Ollie, i have been doing locums every month for the past few months, but recently i have found that all my applications have been rejected one after another eventhough many of my colleagues are doing 3 to 4 locums in a month. I feel i have been penalised or marginalised to some extent. Just want to know who i should see to sort this out, maybe there is a person who oversees the Doctors bank for locums? Thx in advance for your help.

Hi Dr Ollie, I am a FY1 doc who is going to locum for one shift. soon. I am just wondering if it is £35 per hour X 8 or do they take out the lunch hour and multiply with 7. My shift is from 9am to 5pm (which is 8 hours inclusive of lunch). Thank you very much in advance.
@OllieBurtonMed

I can only assume it depends on your trust (as in ask whoever is offering to pay) but all of mine have included paid breaks, so 8 hours of pay for an 8 hour shift

Hey Ollie, do you know if its possible to locum during your academic block of an SFP?
@OllieBurtonMed
@OllieBurtonMed Жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as you're not employed to work that day - for example I'm employed 9-5 Mon Fri academically, so I can't locum during the day and then do academic work in the evening - it has to be one or the other. If I want to locum it still needs to be evenings/weekends/annual leave
@installingvirus1
@installingvirus1 Жыл бұрын
@@OllieBurtonMedthanks! And I suppose it would work vice versa do 9-5 academic, then locum late/night? Or would that not possible due to protected time/shift times?
@OllieBurtonMed
@OllieBurtonMed Жыл бұрын
@@installingvirus1 You can locum lates! So where I am it's very possible to pick up a twilight shift from 5pm-9pm or whatever after your academic day - nice little bonus on top
