Can I Smoke Marijuana?

If you’re wondering if you can smoke marijuana, Pope Francis offers some advice:
“Let me state this in the clearest possible terms: the problem of drug use is not solved with drugs. Attempts to legalize so-called recreational drugs are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired affects. Here I would affirm what I stated on another occasion: no to every type of drug use. It’s as simple as that.”
But if the answer is no, then why? If it’s not an issue from a legal standpoint, what’s the problem with smoking marijuana?
Here we are talking about recreational use and not medicinal use. Anyone who uses marijuana for recreational use is looking to cope with something deeper. They’re encountering difficulty of some kind in their heart, and turn to marijuana to numb the pain for a while. The problem is, once the drug dies off, the heart is still troubled and the emptiness is deeper.
Marijuana alters your perception of reality. This is a problem not only because it impairs your judgment in the moment. It also leaves a lingering belief that the drug is helping you cope or escape from the troubles of your heart. When the mind finally catches up and sees marijuana actually isn’t helping, it often tries a harder drug.
I should not be asking whether using recreational marijuana is morally wrong, but whether it is helping me grow in my relationship with Christ. If I know I am free in Christ, why do I need marijuana to be free or to be who I really am? God is reality, and marijuana makes you escape from reality. Pope Benedict XVI said:
“The patient and humble venture of asceticism, which in small steps of ascent comes closer to the descending God, this adventure is replaced by magical power, the magical key of drugs. The ethical and religious path is replaced by the technology of drugs. Drugs are the pseudo-mysticism of a world that does not believe yet cannot get rid of the soul’s yearning for paradise.”
“Paradise is waiting for you in reality, not in a cloud of smoke” Fr. Malachy says. Don’t let your hearts settle. Turn to God, and experience the real version of everything you’re looking for.

@@Avo_on_Toast thank you for your comment. I can tell you that turning a blind eye to it is not the way to go about it. My mother did that for years and i thought it was ok to just keep doing it. What helped me was my brother he knew i had a problem and he got me out of the situation i was in without judging me and i think that was the best feeling ever was not being judged for using drugs. The difference is i am 37 i started using drugs when i was 14 so it took many years and alot of attempts for me to see my problem. I’m in the same boat brethren, I smoked for about ten 12 years, with friends and family, connected to many social gatherings. Still I think about sometimes especially in certain situations, but I thank God Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit everyday for strength and to deal with my sins, I’ll hope you walk towards the same, God bless you.

This is interesting as my take and experience was the opposite. I have SEVERE PTSD and before my conversion a buddy of mine suggested I try Cannabis for treating it instead of the pills that weren't working. Honestly it worked. The noise in my head was finally gone, and I could focus on my spiritual life which eventually lead me home. To me it is a gift from God himself and I am thankful for it everyday cause before it my life was....I still have plenty of room for improvement but I'm not spiraling down the drain anymore

I agree with your comment. I believe that marjuana is an escape from a deeper issue which some people do not want to acknowledge. The times when I have smoked, it has a temporary escape, but when looking at the big picture it creates a separation from God. MJ interferes with our ability to build a relationship with God and that is our primary purpose in life. Life is about living with honesty and truth which we all aspire to live eternally with God.

I used to smoke weed for the longest time. *Journaling my worries* with my pen and *sharing my burdens* with christ was what I needed. Reflecting on my worries and sharing them with Christ gave me the mindfullness that weed gave me in the past. Whenever I've *fasted* from carbs or water fasted I've felt less anxious and my compulsive ticks have always gone away. Whenever I've taken a *cold shower* I've felt very refreshed and brave. Whenever I've been *chast* for 10-14 days I start feeling another level of confidence and people notice that gleam in my eye. Amphetamines and weed have given me curage to try new things, mindfullness, confidence, calm. These days I feel I'm able chase those metaphysical things without weed or amphetamines.

One of the reasons man try out many things and continue doing many things, trying out many sexual orientations, taking drugs and other things, is because he is in search of peace. And peace is not in those things, instead they will make him more restless until he rests in God. Jesus gives peace which the world cannot give. The way I see it, smoking anything you go straight from sober to high. Drinking alcohol has a buffer from the liver, establishing a middle ground before getting drunk. Getting drunk is still a sin because that's the "high" for alcohol. The lungs have no such filter so there's no safe ground you can traverse before getting to sinful behavior

Be honest though, no one drinks wine or other drinks for the “nutritional value”, they do it to socialize or “take the edge off” after work. Studies have also found that ethanol might actually be a carcinogen, so any benefits from it are easily mitigated by the negative. Weed has its benefits, as a medicine, but smoking anything can cause damage to the lungs. At the end of the day it really is about what’s more culturally accepted. I think we need to stop separating“drugs and alcohol” and just say “drugs” so that we can have a more helpful conversation about the appropriate uses for each of them.

Hi everyone! Saw once someone's comment that that person prayed to Saint Joseph of Cupertino that he would pass the exams well and, as a result, everything turned out. I also recently passed my exams and prayed to Joseph with faith, and everything is just great. In all three exams everything turned out the best. The prayer itself contains a promise to tell others, that's why I am writing to you. Have a good day, God bless! :)

Not once did I not pray, but also did it while suffering from a severe form of demyelination and CRPS (chronic regional pain syndrome) ALL over my body. CRPS has been deemed the most excruciating syndrome (including all forms of cancer). Imagine jumping into a pool of gasoline and lighting yourself on fire... that's exactly what it feels like (with the awesome addition of bone pain so severe, I cannot move an inch from my bed). I pray to God now but struggle severely with my faith (like many scientists). Nevertheless, I'm still trying. Please pray for me.

If it helps and is spiritually beneficial, I won’t downplay it. They mention you get “unhigh” and come back to reality with the same spiritual unrest, when my own personal experiences and those of many others is completely different. People say “drugs change people” and just assume the worst, but never allow the possibility of the positive change. Psychedelics (and weed can be psychedelic) tend to do this, by taking all the repressed things a person has and forcing them to the surface to be dealt with. I wouldn’t suggest anyone should do it just for fun, but if it helps one draw closer to God, and helps one develop their own spiritual understanding, then I wouldn’t speak out against that. Ideally, everyone shouldn’t NEED that, but many people are “high” in their “reality” because they have a lot of repressed falsehoods that cannabis and other psychedelics can rectify. And the good part is, most psychs and weed cannot be overdosed lethally on, and do not cause physical dependence as opiates do.

That Pope Benedict quote at the end is so incredibly moving, wow. And he is definitely right. The issue with drug use comes with people using it to cope with the world instead of using Christ. However, there are multiple parts to this. The issue with drugs, particularly marijuana, is the same as the issue with everything else in this world, and it hinges upon intent. If you have a hard day and come home to your house to smoke weed and forget about your stresses, I believe it is safe to safe that that is a sin, and is not leading you closer to Christ. However, flip the script and come home and get drunk instead of smoke weed, and it is the exact same problem. Now, imagine you are with your friends and you have a few drinks, as was done in the Bible. Using it socially and in moderation can give us recreation that is not for the sake of coping, and can act as that social lubricant that draws us closer to our friends. I believe that the same can be true with marijuana. Socially and in moderation. The issue is not with marijuana itself necessarily, and rather how we use it, and that broadly applies to so many other things in our world. I have seen friends destroy their lives and brains with extreme usage of marijuana, but I have also seen people use it socially and in moderation, and nothing ill happens to them. In fact, even something is gained a lot of the time. However, this is just my perspective. God bless you guys for this video.

Does "No drugs" mean no coffee, tobacco, sugar?
@kidwithcards2390
@kidwithcards2390 3 жыл бұрын
I think for tobacco: yes, because it is addicting and harmful. If you are addicted you are not free. And as for the tumors it causes, well: "by their fruits you shall know them" (paraphrasing) As far as sugar is concerned: no. It is a carbohydrate a type of chemical our bodies consider their primary source of energy. Its not addicting chemicaly and its harmful like just about everything else- in unhealthy amounts ( water is good, too much water can kill you). And if youre thinking of a sugar "high" thats simply a sudden rush of energy that your body metabolised from the sugar, though it goes away rather quickly its not an altered state of mind. As far as coffe? Im not sure. Hope this helped at least a bit. God bless you.

I understand the concept of how using weed as a way of “putting ourselves on a higher plane” is wrong because the best way to come in contact with god is to be in touch with reality. But I don’t understand! If you only drink when having fun with your friends and you don’t become an alcoholic it isn’t a sin, but why can’t you just smoke weed when you’re having fun with your friends? Not trying to say it’s totally fine to just be addicted to pot but it’s also not okay to be addicted to alcohol. So as long as you’re not becoming addicted to the use of pot or depending on it for your happiness, what’s so bad about it?

These arguments aren't completely watertight to me. Jesus' first miracle was creating wine out of water at a wedding celebration...we can assume people were freely imbibing and probably drunk. The Catholic church also encourages fasting and we have accounts of Christ and Saints doing prolonged fasts that can also be viewed as altering their mental states, as these often lead to hallucination. People's mental states also alter from day to day depending on their diet, sleep, hormone levels, exercise, external events that influence mood. What even is a clear state of mind?

If the basis of this argument is not letting something else become God to us or alter who we are...then we need to eliminate everything that *might* have negative consequences- what about sugar, alcohol, processed food, exercise, caffeine, youtube?! Personally I see it as the same with alcohol, it can be very beneficial when used appropriately, when used sun up to sun down it might be a problem. Occasional or daily use in moderation of pot, alcohol and any other drug or activity that brings pleasure shouldn't be an issue if it doesn't get in the way of being physically, mentally and spiritually sound. Personally I found myself using it to feel like I was okay when I was in a place in life that I should have been doing better and it held me back from getting that piece of mind by actually getting out of that bad situation. Then I did the same thing with alcohol, then with exercise After getting to a better spiritual, mental and financial situation I found that it became easy to have moderation and use alcohol and exercise in moderation and not as a focal point to try to escape my troubles. It's not about the object necessarily, God did not create anything by accident or mistake, we have free will and if you cannot help yourself from temptations then it would probably be best to stay away.

You (and The Pope) have articulated extremely well the reasons why it’s not good. One of the things I noticed when drunk was the absence of my need for God. It took me a couple days to be humble enough to pray. This was deeply troubling. I couldn’t quit-awful. I struggled many years on and off alcohol for seven years. I have personal experience noticing what an alternate reality did to my soul on a daily basis. I absolutely loved your analogies but particularly loved the best reason; we move away from the answers Jesus reveals to us on our journey. James 1:2 we can’t grow in the way Christ wants us to. I rather smoke weed then take medications any day been there and I couldn’t do it ...weed hasn’t destroyed me or changed me at all...it’s just expensive lol I know I have to change my environment in order for me to not feel like I have to smoke it everyday all day that’s my issue ...I def have a problem because I rely on weed to help me when I shouldn’t , weed I don’t feel like it’s a bad thing if you want to enjoy it and enjoy the experience just like everything in life ...but weed to me is medicine it’s helping many people who are very sick so I thank god for the things he created in order to help those who really need it..i feel like if everyone smoked a joint at the same time all over the world then we will have world peace for a few minutes guaranteed

We rely on food for nourishment, water for hydration, houses for shelter, vitamins for health, family for comfort, friends for socialization, technology to make it through the modern world, millions of prescription meds to help with numerous physical and mental issues. Don't let people guilt trip for relying on cannabis if it's something that helps you be a better person or has other benefits. It's not what we rely on that matters, it's how we can benefit from it. If cannabis doesn't offer a benefit then throw it aside, but there will always be something else to rely on that will take it's place.

For example I use it for my ADD, when I want to do something creative like paint or make music, and when I am surrounded by my friends and family watching a movie or having dinner etc. I use edibles so I know exactly how much I take so I can make sure I’m not taking too much. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t make me unable to control myself. I feel pretty normal like I could drive or even go to a meeting. I have made the decision to stop drinking alcohol though. Hi Victoria. From philosophy, and approved by the Church, we know that all moral acts are judged to be good or evil by object, circumstances and intention. All three must be good for the act to be good. Intention (i.e. to get high) and object are the problems for recreational weed use. Evil is a lack or privation of that which should be present - in the case of getting high, there is a lack of command of intellect and will (our spiritual soul - God's image in us), making us more like animals than human beings. For wine, by object it is nourishment (healthy according to science in moderation), and as long as intention of consuming is about nourishment (and not getting drunk) it's use is morally good.

Great video guys. You kept the objectivity. I have been a user and theres a fine line there. If misused it definitely harmful and lead to addiction which is giving the enemy a gateway to come screw your life up. Don't let ANYONE or ANYTHING become an Idol. Keep Jesus the center of our lives

VERY interesting in the beginning, how he says it leads to other bad things. An older guy who did drugs flat out told me - "DON'T". My druggie friends who have heard about what I, on the spectrum, have done, the states I have reached, the spirituality I have, simply by listening to music or experiences with God told me that that's exactly like getting high, but without the addiction. I still feel I should try weed or even mushrooms at some point, but fragments of edibles or chocolate that my druggie friends gave me had no effect on me on camping trips (I'm guessing because a) my form of autism is immune to drugs because I'm so synchronized to the cosmos that I'm naturally 'high' all the time or b) it was the fact that we were drinking or c) it was the impact of the campfire/stars/ambience negating any impact on me).

Love this video, put down the recreational Mary Jane and turn to Blessed Mother Mary!!! To put it bluntly, Your prayer life will get you higher than the weed. (Rosary or Chaplet) Beads not buds will win every time if you Trust in Jesus. I promise you will be more joyful.

I like pot. I'll smoke it once a week on my day off with a glass on cognac....smoking cigarettes and drinking everyday is worse. Moderation is key. But that involves being an adult which is hard
@angelicdoctor8016

Prayer is better than pot or cognac or cigs or a 12 pack, regarding our spiritual souls. Diminishing our intellect and will with any substance (especially if it's not actual food - i.e. pot) offends the image of God in us (which is our intellect and will). Being an adult means not saying "I like pot", but "I like prayer". For more, Google "object, circumstance, and intention" + Catechism of Catholic Church, to see how moral acts are evaluated for goodness.

You're basically doing what Fr Malachy spoke about, escaping. On your day off, when you could be doing anything to nurture your body, mind and soul, you're opting to check out and numb yourself. I imagine you're burned out and stressed from working all week long, and the weed helps you "relax" (i.e. distract you from being bored with no plans) on the contrary, it numbs you for a few hours like Novocaine during a root canal. Good luck to you and God bless you.

I have a med card for my PTSD and PCOS and IBS I truly believe God gave me marijuana because I was on 16 different pills and it made me very suicidal and I had many attempts but since I started smoking and eating edibles medically I haven't had attempts and I converted to catholicism from being brought up pagan. I feel like medical marijuana has cleared my mind and made me realize who I am and how important having a relationship of God is. I have seen too many people abuse the plant and I think that is horrible and it can cause some messed up stuff but it affects everyone differently

Cannabis is the main ingredient of the Holy Anointing Oil and the ingredients are listed in the book of Exodus 30:22 Dr Sula Bennett has done all the research Kaneh Bosem is CANNABIS Jesus said when you fast be sure to wash and anoint your face with OIL. Be a WISE VIRGIN and bring your flasks of OIL to keep your lamp lit for when the BRIDEGROOM arrives THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD We run to the odour of thy ointments, the young maidens have loved thee exceedingly. From the book of Sirach 24:19,20 In the streets, like cinnamon and aromatic balm, I gave forth a sweet fragrance: like the choicest myrrh, I yielded a sweetness of odour. Telling people that weed is bad is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit which is the only unforgivable sin.🙏💯💪

@@TheXone7 what have I twisted? The recipe is listed plain as day in the book of Exodus and in Leviticus we are commanded to light our lamps every morning and evening. Myrrh is an ingredient of the Holy Anointing Oil along with cannabis. Do you know what myrrh is anyways?

morality is the concern: object, circumstance, intention -- all must be good for a moral act to be good - "getting high" as intention diminishes our intellect and therefore offends God who wants better for us (i.e. a deeper prayer life)

@Vercingetorix God made them and they are good in moderation. There's a correct way to use all of Gods work. Marijuana can be applied by Tincture. A drop under the tounge. Even Adderall is "Amphetamine" AKA "Methamphetamine" without the "Methal" compound but it has the *same effect* but ""safer"".

I smoke occasionally, not habitually, and feel alright. I can't handle being medicated every instant. Sometimes it's annoying. But if you don't need to be high don't be high. It's that simple. Just about the only thing I can think of that would be okay recreationally would be to go out for a run, perhaps in nature. Other than that, I hate when people abuse marijuana and others, just to be cool. And just because it's less harmful than alcohol and nicotine, it doesn't mean you need to make an abusive lifestyle out of it.
