In this video the surgeons discuss the use of Tylenol, also known as acetaminophen, and Advil, also known as ibuprofen. ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER BEFORE TAKING ANY NEW MEDICATIONS. The surgeons discuss the fact that acetaminophen is metabolized by the liver. Ibuprofen, which is a non steroidal anti inflammatory or NSAID is metabolized by the kidney. So if you are healthy enough to take either of the medications, most of the time it is ok to use both medications at the same time as part of a multimodal pain treatment plan.

As a Combat Medic we mix these two quite often. They work very well together. Almost as well as Opioid pain killer especially in the field where performance may still be required. For initial dosing I usually do 2x2 then 1x1 there after as needed. This sometimes gets a bit high for normal dosing. But we are talking field emergency situations with generally healthy soldiers

I've asked my doctor about this and he said it's fine and says that it's basically attacking the pain at two different angles. Whenever my DDD flares up to a pain level 4, I'd take a pill each and it works better than two of the same for me. Nice to watch this and get a second opinion (even though unnecessary), but it's great for those that are looking for other ways to manage their pain.

Something not stressed here, and should be noted (these doctors know this but I think they sort of skipped over this): If a tablet is enteric-coated, such as basic Ibuprofen, DO NOT cut or crush these tablets. The special coating is there to protect your stomach. As always, if you’re not sure, ask your nurse, doctor, or pharmacist. -Fran RN (ret.)

That's really helpful. I've learned a lot about pain control (as opposed to pain relief) as a result of a broken wrist and a broken ankle 11 years later. I wasn't getting much help or advice from my GP and found a lot of this information about combining the two on the internet, but this video explains why what I found worked for me - worked. Super helpful to have my own research findings confirmed and more information about why. It wasn't the broken bones that caused me to grind my teeth with pain, it was the post-surgery recovery for about 10 days that was the problem. British GPs seem incredibly reluctant to prescribe opiods now which is excruciatingly frustrating post-operatively. I'm still struggling with my ankle sometimes, six months after surgery, but paracetemol works wonders when I've overdone it!

The way it was explained to me was these 2 meds work in very different ways. Ibuprofen goes to the source of the pain, and tackles the inflammation that causes the pain, and acetaminophen works by telling your brain it doesn't hurt. ????? IDK if this is an oversimplified explanation, but it makes sense. The liver is affected by acetaminophen and the kidneys by the ibuprofen. ??????

Acute Rehab RN here- this combo is not unusual for our multiple trauma/fracture patients (of course those without renal or hepatic impairment). That combo gets ordered as a routine pain management modality, with prn opioids on board. And those patients usually get Lidocaine topical patches administered around the affected site (assuming the fracture is not in a cast, like an ORIF of the hip), and some kind of muscle rub cream (think of bengay) to apply as well. Good info for the average layperson!

I always did the old 8, 8 oz cups a day but he said not enough for a big guy like me. I keep a 20 oz bottle with me and drink 5 (refills) from 6A to about 7P. (I'm no environmentalist but there are too many empty bottles out there. I might use the same one for months. Just rinse it out once a day) Just makes sense that water is good for you. Interesting, thanks. I have been really thankful that I haven't needed pain pills for a long, long time. It's not possible to prevent all pain but I do make sure I'm more careful to prevent injury that may result in large doctor bills and the need for pain pills, such as certain sports I used to do. Also consciously more careful when driving, too.

For those who say Tylenol “doesn’t work”…my surgeon explained that in combination with ibuprofen, acetaminophen works in concert, from separate loci, for an optimal outcome in pain control. In my case I couldn’t tell you if they both worked but based on my pain level I’d say we need something much better to be developed. If not for the narcotics I’d have been truly suffering the first ten days home. Demand your meds people!

I had a total hip replacement 4 weeks ago. I was on opioids in the hospital (overnight stay), and was prescribed 2 opioid meds upon discharge, along with several other meds. I did not take any of the Oxycodone, and only took the Tramadol for 2 days. Essentially, all I've taken for pain is 1000 mg of Acetaminophen 3 or 4 times a day. Yes, I still have the pain, though not as intense as the first week, but I have a rather high tolerance anyway, and I did not want to take the opioids. My Dr. did instruct me not to take NSAIDs while on the Acetaminophen, but since that is my pain reliever of choice, I may take your advice and intersperse some Ibuprofen with the Acetaminophen. Thanks!
