Can I wear my elastics just at night?!

Elastic rubber bands are used with Braces, Invisalign, and the Carriere Motion appliance to correct your bite. If you only wear your elastic rubber bands at night you will not get the bite correction you need. Obviously, check with your orthodontist for your specific treatment because everyone is different but in general you need to wear your elastics 18+ hours a day to get the movement needed to correct your bite.
If you have any other questions let me know in the comments below!

Thank you so much for making this video, I am 8 months into my treatment and today I started my elastics, so far so good they don’t hurt as much.. but I wanted to ask I’m correcting a cross bite on the right side, how long could I be wearing my elastics?

Hi Kia! I'm glad your elastics aren't hurting much. The more you wear them the less they will hurt. As for time, it depends on how bad your cross bite is and how good your body responds. For my bite I wore elastics my entire time in treatment (24 months!) and I was very compliant I just had a far distance to go. Even if you do need to wear them for many months, it's not too terrible - the more you wear them, they will just become an easy part of your treatment and you'll be so used to them that you'll feel weird without them. Be as compliant as you can and that will help your teeth shift faster and therefore you will only have to wear your elastics for the fewest months possible. Good luck, you've got this!!!

Hi, i had a class 2 malocclusion and wore elastics for 4 months before being switched to night time wear as I have a class 1 malocclusion now (teeth and jaw in correct position). I don't know if I'm being paranoid but I feel my overbite is relapsing ever so slightly after a few weeks on night time wear. Do you think I might have swapped to night time to quickly? Do overbites usually relapse. I'll soon be done with invisalign treatment. thanks

Are you an adult or child? Class two malocclusion's are harder to achieve a stable correction if you are an adult. We even sometimes had adult patients still wear rubber bands once they were in their retainers to try to help keep the bite in the proper position. I actually did that for quite a while. If you feel like it is relapsing I would give your Orthodontist a call to discuss but it is likely that you could need to wear the elastics full-time for a bit longer.

Do i wear both of my elastics at night or one because i got given two types one for day and one for night so im not sure

I would double check with your doctor but if you were given one for during the day and one for night then I would wear the nighttime elastic when you sleep. Sometimes people are given two different size elastics, one for the right side and one for the left side so make sure that is not the case. Lastly, sometimes people are told only to wear one side at night and the other side both during the day and night. That is usually when one side bite is much worse than the other side so the elastic worn just at night is on the side that is not as off. Does this all makes sense? I know this will be a bit confusing. But I would say from what you have said above is that you should wear the one they told you to wear at night during the night time. It is not common that the Orthodontist would be telling you to double up on elastics and wear both the daytime and nighttime at the same time during the night. Let me know if you have other questions.

My ortondontist said I only have to wear my rubber bands at night but why is that?
@orthoeducator7574

It most likely means that the majority or all of the movement for the bite correction has been accomplished and now you are simply holding it (by wearing your rubber bands just at night). This helps with the stability of the bite correction.

My ortho said to wear mine all the time except while eating and sleeping. I'm having a hard time getting used to it during the day. Will wearing my band at night instead give me the same results? (I use 1 band from left canine to left second to last molar)

You need to do what your orthodontist is recommending. If you’re only wearing it at night, that really just helps to maintain the movement that has been accomplished. If you’re still needing more bite correction, then you need to wear them as often as you can. Usually once you have created the habit it’s pretty easy. Good luck!

For most people after meals or about four times per day is good - 8am, 1:30pm, 7:00pm, before bed. If you talk a lot for work or school then I’d change after those time. You’re trying to keep a constant force to achieve the movement and the elastics wear out as you open and close. Hope this helps!

I hope your treatment is going well. Usually nighttime elastic wear is easy and should not effect your sleep or be upsetting

I promise you get used to it and it’s not as bad as it seems. A lot of people your age, whether you’re a teen or adult, will have braces with elastics. They really aren’t thaaat noticeable and honestly no one cares. If you are really compliant you won’t have to wear them for as many months because you’ll achieve the correction and have the best functioning bite. So if you can, try to be 100% compliant for as long as possible. On the other hand, if you know there is no way you will wear them full time then have that discussion with your orthodontist. That way you are not in your braces longer because your doc is waiting on your compliance and for your bite to correct when it never will without compliance. Or ask if there are any other options - remember you are on the same team and both you and your doc want you done with treatment meant asap
