So "The Darkness of Tonako" is pretty clearly inspired by a story about the poem "Tomino's Hell". If anyone's interested in looking it up, there's quite a few similarities in the text, and of course there's the whole thing of bad things happening when you read it out loud.

The only fear I felt was thinking about having to listen to another long winded cassette story. The game did pull some creepy imagery towards the end, but wayy too much exposition to be scary.

I missed the first hour of the video being uploaded so I decided to wait until it was nighttime and I can confirm that the dialogue was the most terrifying thing in this game. Also somebody give Mousey an Oscar for her amazing voice acting skills.

The Fatal Frame games are a good start to atmospheric and spiritual horrors, but I think ironmouse may end up getting nightmares. Since those games revolves around really cruel human thoughts like suicide. It's not that scary as it involves photography combat with ghosts and has replayability in chapters, but the story and idea is neat, as well as the art direction for the ghosts and their backstory. Also the team behind Fatal Frame dealt with actual ghost incidents, the boss especially has a connection to them apparently. Apparently supernatural data somehow exists while they were developing and then live testing the game, but vanished once they launched them. For instance in indie horror games you get a jump scare and cheaply animated style of designs, but the Fatal Frame series really nails it with the 'movement from the corner of your eyes' scares, and transitioning to 'supernatural visions' your character sees as you explore. The boss of the studio literally said that when a ghost is around, you'll know because there is a 'sound' that you can hear in those situations (based off of his own experiences it seems). I presume it's like a frequency or faint noise that humans aren't aware of. But it's a stupidly long game that gets even longer because every time you open a drawer or pick up an item, you have to watch your character take 3-5 seconds to 'reach' towards it, while gasping or holding her breath as if something will jump out and grab the character's arm (and in some cases they do). Then you look at indie horror games and it's generic monster from generic backgrounds or mysteries... But Japanese cultures and their mythologies and ghosts are way more chilling.
