A couple years back, my daughter and I were out hittin' yard sales on a Saturday morning. It's our fun weekend hobby together. I had just mentioned to her that I was looking for one of those lighted magnifying glasses on an articulated arm. The very next sale had one new in the box for five bucks! Serendipity I suppose. I use that thing daily, along with reading glasses and a healthy dose of humility. Sucks not being able to see things up close anymore.

Darren, the 3x6 decal refers to three wheels and six gears (5 forward/1reverse). They were great bikes in their day. 1987 was the last year the Big Four made 3-wheelers, but there was never a government ban on them, contrary to the popular myth.

I can't imagine the fun you guys had in the 70s in an area like that. I had no such toys or space like that to get in trouble. Mustie's love for all things with wheels comes from his past enjoying these toys.

We had 3 wheelers at our farm and I can credit my dad with keeping us kids safe with good training. He told us to ride slowly and carefully around the area we wanted to ride in and to take note of dangers before ever thinking about getting on the throttle. I knew every rock, chuckhole, ditch, muddy spot and fallen tree trunk on that farm. These machines are capable at traveling at high speeds and if you're going over rough terrain too fast it's a recipe for trouble. Situational awarenness, care and common sense are all called for. This is all still true for the ATV's of today. We rode a LOT and nobody ever got hurt.

Seeing the three wheeler on the ice reminds me of the time I was riding my younger brother's Heath Kit MiniBike around in the winter - I was about 19 or 20 so it would have been in about 1972 or '73. He loved that thing. It was lots of fun. We lived on Great South Pond in Plymouth, MA. After a couple hours zipping around in the woods, around the bogs and along the beach, it was getting dark. I decided it was a good idea to head directly across the pond back to the house... Halfway back, at the deepest spot in the pond, the ice had just frozen a few days earlier - the ice was dark and clear. I'm looking ahead, going about 6 or 8 miles an hour - and see cracks forming ahead of me... as you saw, you can't do any abrupt turns on ice, only very gradual turns. Brakes won't stop you, throttle just spins the wheel. Nobody else around. The front wheel breaks through, the minibike plunges through - I get dunked up to my chest in the 38 foot deep water... all I could think of to do was reach to the side of the hole as the minibike sunk. My wet gloves stuck to the ice adjacent to the hole - it was a very cold afternoon. I'm in the water up to my neck now. Gloves stuck to the ice a foot from the hole - it was beyond gosh-darn cold - I knew I had a few minutes left in this world - what now - plop one glove 8 inches forward, away from the hole... it stuck - okay - plop the other glove another foot from the hole - it stuck. Ice was no more than an inch thick there, cracking as I went but I kept at it, eventually got my upper chest onto the ice - scurried ahead one plop at a time until I could get my stomach onto the ice. After creeping and crawling, legs and arms spread out for about 25 feet, I got to thicker ice and could eventually crawl and then get onto my feet. The minibike is still in the pond - we tried to grapple for it but could never snag it. I had to give my brother my sweet Schwinn Super Sport 10 speed bike plus a $100 to pay him off. I only go on thin ice now when wearing a full body Stearns Mustang suit.

I grew up with the 4 wheeler variant, great memories! I also picked one up a couple years ago from the original owner. These things are a rough ride but bullet proof. It will probably out last the next few generations.

These are the first thing I remember working on with my dad! I love it! He still has his somewhere, think my uncle might have em now, yellow 125s! They were so fun, and light, and the float! Oh and don't forget they have reverse! You go into neutral and pull that red lever!

Had the earlier version in the '70s as a kid, with electric start. Was great once you got the hang of it, all the weight shifting/balancing. These 'trikes' were deadly, 200 people a year in Australia were dying on these things.

loved this video ..brought back the years of fun we had one the farm in the UK on these trikes back in the 80's ... we got hurt soooo many times but it was just soo much fun we kept getting back on them... brought a big smile to my face watching you have fun ..very envious .

We had a similar Suzuki rig at the deer camp, I seem to recall it having a compression release lever/knob though. Pain in the rear to cold start it no matter what you did, it would either go on two pulls or not go on 20. It was the only trike out of a few quads we had up there, mostly Honda Fourtrax and Kawasaki's. Real fun to ride on it. Spent a lot of time down in the bottoms getting into and out of trouble, mud, and water.

There was a lot of people hoping the ice was going to crack 🤣I enjoy watching you fix stuff you are never boring, we dont get winters in the UK like you do unless you live in Scotland, so its fun to watch other daft buggers 😀

Got one of these for X-mas in 83. Only difference was mine was yellow. Awesome 3-wheeler, never had any issues with it. Basically lived on that thing until I got my license in 85. Must of put 1000's of miles on it and still ran strong when I sold it. Really wish I had kept it.

I was going through an old photo album the other day & grinned when I came across the pic of me pulling a wheelie on my '86 Honda 185S in the driveway - I was about 14 at the time. That machine had about a 1" front shock and no rear suspension - it finally died after destroying the rear wheel bearings because we would jump the crap out of it! Thanks for bringing back the memories of playing on the ice, Mustie1!

I had this same Trike when I was 13 and my Dad had a Honda 200m. Balloon tires and zero suspension was never so much fun 😊 You really had to read the trail and throw your weight around constantly 👍

Looks. like the operation was a success. I'm a little leary about three wheelers, because I watched a friend of my dad crash one of these, and he tore his shoulder up. I think he had a torn rotator cuff, and a dislocation. I like old 4 wheelers without all the digicals lol. God bless y'all.

Great job, great video. I look forward to my Sunday morning video. The three wheeler looks like a lot of fun!! I did notice when it was up on the lift that the axle on the left side(pull starter side) looked like it was bent. When you had it up on the jack to check the transmission the left wheel looked like it was bent but when you showed the back of the trike you could see the axle wobble.

I've had many cases of tinkeritis in my youth, sometimes resulting in making a problem worse, but it's how I learned what not to do! Another great video, I hope we aren't too much in the way while you work on stuff, and don't feel too weird about having fun, I'm almost 52 and I love a good donut too :-)

These were the best little buggers to have fun on !!! I had an '86 Suzuki 185cc 4-wheeler and my cousin had an '85 Suzuki 185cc three-wheeler and we rode countless hours on those 2 things back in the mid-80's.... was so much fun !!! Tough as nails too and on an open road those darn things went up to 50mph... total madness !!!

Long ago, at the cycle shop, we did some “test rides” if we had a slow day going on. The three wheelers were unique. Lean out of the turn and you could do a rapid “about face”. Combine that with wide open throttle and a hefty pull on the bars, and you could do a one wheel “wheelie”. I miss those days.

We as repair men and women can never let the "Good Ol Days" die! Thanks for the video and keep them coming.

we used to have the honda 125 trike on a farm in wales when I was a kid and it was incredibly useful and so much fun to ride, my dad put a large plastic bread tray on the rack and our sheepdog rode around on that all day.at a local show the farmers used to have horse races around the perimeter of the field and when hat was done they raced the farm bikes on the same circuit! thanks for the blast from the past mate, didn't realize how much I missed them.

When they first came out with the Suzuki 4 wheelers they still had the big balloon tires on them, and if you had them aired up good. We could ride them across ponds if you sit straight up, if you leaned over too far to one side you got a bath before you could sit back up straight enough to save yourself. Typically if water wasn't too deep you could actually flip them back right side up before they stalled out. Then you could at least walk beside it until water was shallow enough to let the tires touch bottom without flipping back over as you put your weight on it.. Needless to say you took a couple baths before you learned not to make any undue movements while crossing any deep water, and I doubt they'd be very good at crossing anything that had flowing water that had any downstream speed, because they weren't real fast on the forward speed, and turning took a little distance, so you planned ahead otherwise you would have to slowly circle around until you found another place to get out of the water. The Honda 2 strokes were the fastest of the three wheelers, and I don't know how many people flipped them over are ran over their own legs that I seen, but it was good number of them.. Some never got it down to lean the opposite direction than if you were on two wheels, and that's what I think signed the death warrant for them. All n all they were a blast once you trained your brain to do opposite of what muscle memory told you to do.

Looks great fun, but I think they can be quite tricky on 3 wheels. Once you get the hang of it you get quite brave as well and they flip quite easily. Lovely video though with the problem solved came a little lucky :D

I worked at Adventure Motorcycle (North Hampton) in the mid 80s. I may have even serviced that machine when it was new.. LOL... Thanks again for a great video...

Grew up on those things. Way back , scored an 84 Kawasaki klt200-c for $100. Needed a battery and a muffler. Manual transmission. That thing would move. Also had a locking differential that you could unlock when the extra traction was not needed. The ones with the centrifugal clutches, you have to watch. They wear quickly when lugged around in too high of a gear.

My father used one of those on the farm in the 80's. Fortunately, he always drove it slow and didn't try climbing over large obstacles. They were notorious for rolling, especially when going fast over uneven ground. A lot of people were injured or worse. That's why most of the ones you find are busted up.

WOW! I haven't been on one of those for about 40 years. Dangerous, yes, but fun as hell to ride once you got used to the steering. Glad you got it running again.

I had both the 3 and 4 wheeler the biggest thing with riding the 3 wheeler is that you lean the opposite direction you want to turn, it throws you off when go from 1 to the other but they were fun! However I couldn't get mine to run as well as that one

If the worst comes to the worst, you can always take the ethanol out of the fuel. Put 4.5 gallon petrol and half gallon of water into a 5 gallon container. Agitate for ages and then allow to settle. siphon out the water (and ethanol) - what you have left is pure, ethanol-free petrol!

My uncle had a Honda 3-wheeler on the farm in the late 70's. I rode that thing all over the place as a young teen growing up. If you weren't careful you could flip it over. Then the 4-wheelers came out to add more stability, but I still like the look.of the original ATC's.

Love 3 wheelers! You are right 100% on keeping your feet up, I learned the hard way in my younger days at a pretty good clip, stopped instantly by my leg getting wrapped up in the back wheel. Never happened again!!!!! LOL

I had this exact model and year. Somehow I never hurt myself but a few friends got thrown off or a leg under a tire!

My first bike was a Honda 185S at the age of 15. No injuries, thankfully. I recently bought a 1984 Kawasaki KLT110. I got it running last week. Put a few videos up on tiktok. People still love these things. Great little rippers.

These things are only as dangerous as the idiots on them. Back around 1986, a work friend had a Honda Big Red. I was attempting to jump it down a a hill. It didn't, I didn't, left knee was mashed between the handlebars and tank. The thing was up until that point, I wore an open faced helmet, and this time I wore a full helmet. Saved my face. The damage to the Honda was a dent in the tank, bent handlebars, bent lever, and all the switches on that side. I paid for all the repairs and he had a custom painted tank. Took about a year for my knee to recover.

I was 15 when they banned three wheelers. I had a Yamaha 225 4 stroke that was indestructible and a torque wheelie monster. I wanted a 2 stroke racing model from the big 4 at the time. My Stepfather showed up with a brand new Yamaha Warrior one day and said it was for him but he never rode it so I dominated with it. Much more powerful 350 6 speed manual opposed to my auto shaft trans 225. Rider skill is why they were dangerous. Too many noobs would ride and ride drunk and paralyze themselves because of stupidity. I love trikes and would love to own an off road racing trike like ATC 250R now but quads are way more stable than the 3 wheels design. Also I own and ride a Can Am Spyder now that I am 50 yr old man so my love of motorsports has never waned. 2 wheels in front, 1 in rear is also way more stable than single steering wheel in front
