It's time for Part Two of my Autumn 2023 reading review where we look at a range of books and discuss the narrative techniques that make them either really great or really popular (not always both haha!). In this video we discuss Manacled by SenLinYu and Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë - two very different books! Let me know if you've read either of them and what you thought.

Manacled is the first and only fanfiction I ever read and literally nothing can follow it for me 😭 it was so masterfully written and really captured not only the essence of the characters, but expanded upon them in such a compelling way. Funnily enough I actually hate flashback sequences but the way SenLinYu did this was just mindblowing. I've read Manacled twice now and it's something I'l come back to every year to fawn over the craftsmanship

I enjoy your voice and personality, its soothing lol. I also like seeing content from another bookworm and writer like me. You come from a world so far and different then mine that its fascinating to me. 📸

I'd say that Manacled is definitely an original narrative, however it's so dependent upon the established canon. The reason so much of it is gut wrenching is because we have the context of the events and lives and friendships of Rowling's 7 books. There's such an intense appreciation of this franchise and the power of the HP universe is what lends itself so well to these original, alt-universe narratives. If Manacled was an original story with original characters I'd argue it would still be good, but not nearly as affective, because it wouldn't have the context of the 7 books it needs to make the story so compelling Also it's so wild this book is 350k words and is readable enough to finish in a matter of days. That's a testament to the fabulous storytelling

I personally think that the whole story would have been even better without the actual manacled part. I'm not sure how to explain it but Senlinyu's other works have similar undercurrent of unbelievebility. I feel it gets so dark the story starts losing it's grip in "reality". That being said the writing is great and their works definitely belong in the fanfiction Hall of Fame.

Yes to all of this! I really hope Senlinyu writes/publishes some of their own work at some point so we can compare. It will be interesting to see how they write on a fully original narrative versus fan fiction. Thanks for your thoughts :)
