So I just wanted to say that for a 51 year old adult who is seriously getting into Woodworking/Cabinetry for the first time in his life,. This channel has been one of, if not, the best of the Tool Review outlets that I have been watching! Thank you! It's so refreshing to listen to someone who sounds educated and decides to go into relevant data with actual facts and figures instead of hearing all of that fuff! Each time, I come away more informed and educated after watching your videos. Great video thanks. I’ve just ordered the Metabo HPT due to its nice build quality and ergonomics coupled with the kickback function as of course non of these drills have side handles.

Great testing as usual- I picked up the Metabo HPT and love it . The overall feel is high quality, powerful and comfortable. The chuck is very secure and locks down much better than my other drills. I've not had a single bit slip out of it yet. Overall pleasure to use, for the kit price it'll be tough to beat. It's been my go to driver since I picked it up.

Good comment, and I’m glad you’re enjoying your new drill. I have to say, and being a Metabo HPT fan and user, I was a little underwhelmed by the new drill. It still has that insipid ‘loose’ FWD/REV switch. Seriously Metabo? That new triple hammer is sure nice. I love my 18 volt triple hammer. take care

Liked your review as usual. Don’t know how I missed this one, especially since I have the Milwaukee brushless combo here. I had the previous brushless set with hammer function, which turned out to be my go to tools. Time will tell if the latest set will fill the void. Gave the previous set to my nephew, for his new house. I have the Makita XGT combo for my big guns. But sometimes they are just that. Even though hand held with the 4.0 ah battery it’s a workout. My other combo Dewalt 800 drill and 350 impact is like peanut butter and jelly, it just goes together. DeWalt did their job here. IMHO. lol 😁

Excellent video! Tight presentation of what some other channels have turned into a waffling 24-minute clusterf@#k. Your OTJ 'Tuber time is definitely showing, here. Intro and closing dialog is crisp & thorough; no wasted time or extraneous digressions. Same goes for the basic staging, which made for a *very* clean result in editing. Also, a big thank-you for *cutting the gain on your theme music*, throughout. Lol I wish more YTers would figure out that loud, 'busy' BG music adds ZERO to a video. 🙄 All of which reminds to ask...please consider doing a video on two closely related subjects that every other 'tool geek' YT channel has almost entirely ignored, to date.: - Basics of speed vs torque for your chosen screw types and typical applications. - Why the specific brand/model of spade bit & auger? Your favorite? Best sellers? As to specifics, same goes for the screws. I mean, are those brands/models the gold standards of the timber framing industry? Enquiring minds want to know, dude. Lol Keep up the good work! .

That Flex is an absolute monster, I don't think it bogged down once. I did buy the new compact Milwaukee kit, I'm more interested in the Impact than the drill. I am surprised about how the Drill performs. The Impact is awesome, the head is way smaller than my Gen 2 M12 Fuel Impact. It's crazy, if they slammed that new compact impact in an m12 format I believe it would be the smallest impact Milwaukee offers, as it stands now it is the smallest Impact they have. Hopefully the new forge batteries coming out are more compact than the standard Red Lithium batteries, kind of like Dewalts Powerstack vs their normal batteries.

The forge batteries they have announced so far are bigger capacity batteries. I am hopeful that they will come out with a small form factor battery but that’s just my hope and not any rumor I have heard

@@louisd95714 If you’re referring to the compact flex, the Milwaukee fuel would destroy it. It’s that simple. The Milwaukee fuel is comparable to the flex, full-size turbo, hammer drill, so comparing it to this compact model wouldn’t even be fair.

Thanks for clarifying the decision to include the Ridgid subcompact drill in with the compact drill comparison, it makes sense. Shame on Ridgid for being misleading.

I don’t necessarily view it as misleading. Their product line has been out longer than most of these and others just decided to go with compact.

@@TinkerWithTools Maybe it because when I see the word "subcompact" I immediately associate/compare it with the Makita line subcompact tools. To my knowledge, they were one of the first tool brands to use that terminology. Which to me means: small and light weight (12 volt size): 18 volt run time, but not a powerful as the larger 18 volt tools.

Yeah all of these fit that description as well. But unlike that makita line up these all deliver more than enough performance for a lot of tasks.

@@abelesparza6059The ridgid is the smallest of all these. Not the shortest in length but it is the lightest and all the smallest in circumference. The Dewalt is absolutely fat. So is the metabo. How could they be in the compact catagory. What do you mean shame on Ridgid? Do your homework a go to a store and handle all these. I have. Ridgid is the smallest here. Just look at it compared to the others in the this video especially when he has them lined up and giving his last thoughts. The only thing that is smaller is the tiny makita and the last generation ridgid subcompact. The makita is so weak its not worth having. Also other channels have showed that out of all of these compact drills the ridgid gets the biggest power boost going up to the next powerful batrery. The ridgid 2.0 max output battery gives this thing like 35 percent more power with the same size battery. So the best power per size, weight, cost, warranty, is the Ridgid. There are sights that have put every size battery on these compacts and the most powerful were the flex, Milwaukee and Ridgid.

I consider it a compact premium version. Yes the atomic is underpowered here but the 800/805 is in a different class power wise in my opinion.

I’m not familiar with the DCD794, but my local Lowe’s had a DCD793 on demo, with a box of screws so customers could ‘play,’ and I rather liked it. The chuck was TRUE! Believe it or not! The 794 maybe at Home Depot? I’m with ‘Tinker with Tools,’ on DeWalt’s ridiculous number of models in a lineup. It’s cornflusing! 😆

@TinkerWithTools another channel just showed the new milwaukee outperforming the dcd800 with a self feeding paddle bit. I couldn't believe it. Both had standard 2ah batteries. I thought the dewalt would take it and I'm team red. Now I gotta know!

id love to see the compact drills go up against the premium impacts, as far as weight goes they are all just about the same and even some of the lengths are similar. If i am carrying just one all day i'd like to know which one is the best for general drilling/fastening.

A impact isn’t good for drilling even though it’s possible. On the flip side a hammer drill won’t work on nuts and bolts. These cannot be combined into one tool.

@@markm0000 Hi mark, no disrespect, but I have to kinda agree/ disagree with you. I hear ya on the drilling with impacts, but it can be done. Makita makes some of the best hex shank drill bits, very true. The problem with impacts is they tend to spin the bit too fast, and the collets, by nature of their design, will allow a lot of oscillation in the bit. I am mainly referring to ‘jobber bits.’ Some of the auger and spade bits seem to do Ok with an impact, but I personally would prefer a drill. I have used a stout drill to run in some lags and ‘nuts and bolts,’ as You said. But yes, on larger lags and such, an impact wrench is actually called for. Might save the ole’ wrist at that! Some structural screws actually discourage the use of an impact to run the fasteners in, i. E. Simpson, etc. I think that mainly applies to joist hanger fasteners? I worked in the Trades in another ‘Season of Life,’ with years of experience, and I first used a Dewalt 12.0 volt NiCd impact, like circa 2001/2002. Only mentioned this as I’m speaking from experience. Of course YMMV. But I agree 100%, that One tool cannot do it all! Peace

Just recently found your page and I'm enjoying the content. Was looking into buying some new tools and although Ridgid doesn't win in any of their lines vs Flex or Mikita, I ultimately chose Ridgid over the others. Love the Flex's power, and the Mikita has tools galore. Ridgid offered 2 free tools with their new high torque combo kit. Flex didnt offer any free tools with their combo kit, Mikita did, but their's was higher priced and stand alone tools are priced higher than Ridgid. Flex doesn't offer outdoor tools for yard work, at this time anyway, which was also a selling point for choosing Ridgid over them. It was a tough decision but I can go from wood working to yard work with Ridgid and with better deals than Mikita or Flex.

I have a short that shows this on this drill. Basically I saw about an 8% increase in the task that was done. Yes it would make a small impact but it’s not going to change the order of the results. That would end up being maybe a few seconds closer than it was but likely still in last place. But by that same logic, we can put high output on Milwaukee and stacked lithium on flex and probably improve their times as well.

Metabo serious performance considering 2 ah battery. According to a different video it had a max torque of 161 inch pounds with 2 ah and 220 with 5ah so nice knowing it has more on tap if neccesary

I got the dcd777 and it’s a good drill but man it’s just so long I can’t get it into tight spots. I need to upgrade but I want the dcd794 with a metal chuck.

Well, then the dcd800 is your tool. Yes, the dcd794 is more compact, though it has no metal chuck and no option for one. But the 800 is still seriously compact, even more than its predecessor the dcd791, which in itself is still more compact than your dcd777. And the 800 has the all metal chuck.

@@markm0000I also have the 777. If you’re looking for a comparable compact, I’d recommend the 708 atomic. I’ve actually done a couple of head to head comparisons, and they are really comparable in terms of performance, but the 708 is definitely more compact.

I was really attached to my 7 year old DeWalt DCD777 until the clutch burned out in the lower speed range. I replaced it with the Milwaukee Compact Brushless Drill Driver 3601-20. I' was having buyers remorse until I saw your comparisons. I have not used the drill yet and I'm wondering how it stacks up to the 20 Volt older DeWalt technology. Thanks

Having owned the DCD777 previously (it was actually my first KZfaq review - really stiff performance by me) I would say that the Milwaukee would blow it out of the water. The 777 wasn't a bad drill but the 799 and most of the drills here are a better and more compact drill. If I were picking one in the Dewalt lineup, I would find a way to get the DCD800 and that will really blow most of these and the 777 away. My love affair with that drill is no secret.

@@TinkerWithTools My Remorse is because I have a hard case which holds the drill, Charger and Batteries. It also has room to keep screws, bits and some other accessories. Some would say I don't like change but having this room in a hard case has me spoiled over having to dig around in a bag for STUFF. Somehow I scored the Milwaukee Compact Drill Driver, Impact gun, 2 batteries, charger and bag for $99.00 at Home Depot and could not pass on the deal. Thanks for your comments.

Yeah, it's been a frequent comment. I actually did test it that night and ultimately didn't include it in the video because it was a pretty unfair comp when it come to a lot of the testing. I have several other videos where I put it up against some of the dewalt drills here and even against other higher peforming drills from milwaukee and such.

I just thought I'd post an update. I got the Flex compact drill, and it is too heavy for a compact drill. I tried the M12, and the drill seemed weak. I tried the Ridgid subcompact, and the drill is great with a max output battery. However, the impact driver is weak. I might try the M18 compact next.

The flex has the 24v battery hanging off it and that will always feel like an anchor on such a small tool.

@@TinkerWithTools I found that the groove under the trigger digs into my knuckle just like the full size version. I think it’s because the knuckle on my middle finger is messed up, ergonomics is just as important as power to me.

Can you replace the dcd794 chuck with a metal one? That would be a cool video for each of these drills that have plastic chucks.

Responding to both of you comments with this one. The metal Chuck would be nice and I am sure you can replace it but I haven’t ever done it. The closest thing out of the box would be the DCD800. It’s a more premium version than these drills and big bump in power but it’s a solid well built drill. Probably my favorite drill out today. I’ll have to try replacing one at some point and see how it goes.

@@TinkerWithToolsidk if this is true about the atomic, but the 12v xtreme drill you actually have to take apart to replace the chuck apparently. According to what I've heard, they don't even use a reverse thread screw on the 3/8 plastic chuck. What they do is just really torque it down, and trying to remove it the normal way would screw up the gear box. They said to take it apart, put the shaft in a vice,and then bust the chuck off. I can link the video talking about it if you are interested.

I’ve considered buying it but ultimately haven’t simply because of how outmatched the drill is compared to the others in this group. It’s down 150 in-lbs of the lowest drill in this group. I wish they would update it with a gen 2 at this point.

I believe it was not fear comparison - Milwaukee and Flex from compact class, others competitions from subcompact. For example, you need use dcd800 model from DeWalt.

The only tool here referred to has sub compact would be the Ridgid. The DCD800/805 is roughly 1/2” longer than even the longest drill here. I love that drill and it’s great but it’s not product DEWALT designed to compete with these drills.

@@TinkerWithTools you mean that only AEG/Ridgid claim they tool subcompact. Actually Milwaukee has only full-size and compact drill, Flex fresh player on the market and they available online in 24 volt what not comparable whit other, DeWalt has full-size, compact and something that they call atomic, Metabo/Hikoki has full-size, compact and something just a little bit smaller that compact - how we call tis smaller version? Bosch doesn't have subcompact, but if you look to the they brand new drill you definitely cau say this is full-size, this compact and this definitely subcompact in this line of products. 1/2 mean it's not compact compare his big brother dcd 999? My old dcd 760 was mach more longer, but it was compact.

So, I’ve decided I need to do a three way hammer drill comparison. I’m gonna test the turbo Flex, the Dewalt DCD999 and the gen 4 Milwaukee. The quick eject Flex impact driver has quirks that are already kinda annoying me. I don’t think Dewalt makes the best compact drill out of the three brands, but I do like the ergonomics and trigger control even though the 999 is a pretty heavy drill.

@@TinkerWithTools All three have pros and cons. I like the grip of the Flex the best, but the area between the plastic and rubber under the trigger starts to dig into my knuckle after a few minutes. The Flex impact driver has a weird trigger. If I squeeze it really fast, it seems like it’s cutting out. Probably just a ramp up, but it also seems to get warm pretty quickly. I think it might also be a little too powerful. The Dewalt has the next best grip, and great trigger control, but it is also heavy. I think the big body will help prevent overheating, which is a good thing. The Dewalt is possibly the least powerful of the three, and I’m too keen on the compact Dewalt drills. Dewalt impact drivers are not the best either. The Milwaukee has probably the best power to weight ratio, but I wish it had a little more material under the trigger. The grip could also be more aggressive, and I don’t care for the weird auxiliary handle design. If the Dewalt can accomplish the task, I might take Flex out of the equation. I’ll be sure to tag your channel in the description when I post the video.

The gen 4 Milwaukee handle is bad but the gen 3 was more like what you see from the flex. I just use my gen 3 handle. They redesigned so it would fit in the hard case I think. Not saying that was worth it but I think it’s the reason.

Typically, smoothest, refined and best triggers are from Makita and Bosch. Across the line of tools.

The Metabo measures 87db in speed 2, the Ridgid just shy of 84db. But there is a 250 rpm difference in their top speeds. For comparison I put another drill with 2000 rpm top speed to test and it also was 87db.

The Metabo HPT trigger is a little less responsive then the Milwaukee and DEWALT but the Ridgid has the (in my opinion) awful slow ramp up in its RPM so it feels like you are waiting to get down to business.

Flex just keeps Flexing! All I ever see from the plethora of tool testers is constant wins in all categories, yet somehow people keep hating on them. Got to love the brand loyalists and the blinders on their heads. LOL....

Flex makes some good quality powerful tools. I don’t always prefer them in terms or ergonomics compared to other brands but for the most part the know how to do performance.

I have the Metabo, Flex, and Rigid. Rigid is my favorite by far. The grip is superior and the vibration is low. I have not experienced the slow ramp up, or least have not noticed it. It also hangs easily from the belt clip so I can take it to the roof easily without getting it bogged down. It is definitely a take anywhere tool. The Flex is awesome, but runs hot and I have it overheat on me a few times. Maybe too much power. I definitely would not take it to a job site if I had to rely on it all day. The Metabo is pretty good, but I would not call it superior or anything.

Really nice and compact. Would love to see Milwaukee come out with a compact forge battery to pair with it like the 1.7ah powerstack. The chuck isn't as nice as on their fuel products (it's a little slippery in my opinion) but overall it's a nice compact drill.

Yes it will get hot. Anything with that size and power combo will. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone’s only drill if they are doing predominantly larger tasks but for smaller stuff it’s well suited.

I have owned their entry level brushed tools as well and those tools even have a decent quality build. It’s part of what was appealing to me about Milwaukee in general.

@@TinkerWithTools I’m not saying it’s not annoying. I’m just saying that Ridgid fans that are used to it say that it’s a feature. I, personally, don’t like using a drill to drive Phillips screws because I’m not used to it. I will use it all day for Torx screws, though. With the clutch set to 15, my DCD777 drives Torx screws very nicely. The 708 is about the same.

Dewalt makes some powerful tools but their longevity and durability suck, at least at the industrial level with an oily environment. Milwaukee definitely outlasts them by years.

I use the PAUSE button. not just this channel but any other where I need more time. In other situations you can Decrease or Increase the playback speed in settings for the individual videos

Good point- the Flex is a very powerful, yet heavy unit due to the battery. Would be interesting to test the Milwaukee and Metabo equipped with batteries that made them the same weight as the Flex.The Metabo with the Multivolt attached becomes a monster.

I think it was time to replace their brushless non fuel tools and the market has really shifted since they last released. Not everyone wants to be M12 too so they can fill the need for small tools here.

Make now mistake, the DCD800 is a better drill. If the 794 is on sale for $99 still where you are, then the price difference is greater but if the price difference is minimal then I would go 800 personally. I just think it's more powerful and robust than a lot of these drills and therefore not direct comparison.

I think if you are looking to use it heavy duty, it's small size will of course get hot. so I guess it depends on what you are buying it for. If you are going to be using it repeatedly enough for it to get hot frequently, I would likely recommend you go with a more professional impact anyway. I think that the common people buying the lower priced Milwaukee's are either buying it as a compact second impact or aren't using it in a professional setting. With that said, the Fuel impact will also get hot under heavy use.

Didn’t forget so much as purposely omit. The makita subcompact is an older tool at this point. It would have been the longest drill of this bunch and would have roughly half the power of the the top tool in this group. Given those factors I just haven’t chosen to invest in their sub compact range at this point.

The 2ah are decent with light loads and a smaller battery is nice to be able to fit into tight spots and it’s less weight to move around all day.

I’ve moved to the power stacks for that type of task most of the time for much the same reasons. The size is even smaller but you get more of a punch like a 5ah battery.

It's of lesser materials than the Fuel models for sure. But comparing to other brands, I don't think it feels poor quality necessarily. Just not premium either.

I don’t currently own the Makita sub compacts. With that said even the more recently updated subcompact models will not be very comparable in power and speed to these models. For some that won’t matter but it’s the main reason that I haven’t bought them.

I like how you left out Makita and please don’t ever include it on your next test. The Makita subcompact gen 2 is by far the worst due to the lack of effort of improving on anything. Certainly not the most compact or any performance show off in any category.

@@TinkerWithTools every now and then there’s a deal where you can get it around 150, but what I did is get the hammer drill and an impact driver kit (not sure if it came with a 2.0) separately. What drove me insane is that impact driver was only 1/16 shorter than the previous gen and the hammer drill just felt bulky at the base. What ultimately killed it for me is that the hammer drill just didn’t have any power when I needed it. The Makita impact driver was actually longer than the Kobalt XTR if not about the same in length. If Kobalt made a subcompact line and that’s a big what if, I think it would crush Makita without a doubt.

@@ProxyFinal Good points Gentlemen, but I will tell you from experience, the First GEN 18 VOLT Makita Subcompact impact driver may be long, but it is thin. I bought one some time ago, as it was on clearance, and the battery and fast charger alone were more than the total cost. I tried it a few times, and did NOT like it. THEN, I had to get into some narrow stud spacing on a bath remodel, and the thin little impact fit! Also, I just ran several hundred feet of PEX in my basement (retrofit) and I had to install the plastic hangers, with 3/4 inch screws, and I put the Makita in the assist mode, and it was great. Now that little black impact is one of my favs, up there with my triple hammer, and M18 Surge! Peace. Stay safe

I had the 12v brushed drill and impact that are pretty much the same size but down on power to those. They aren’t bad tools in that they are nice to use but they are lacking on power compared to the competition. The subcompact is a lot of the same. The narrow part of it I get but if you want narrow you should really see the new M18 compact impact in person.

It’s literally lazy design. Also don’t like how they Gen 1 and 2 look roughly the same. My criticism is geared towards Gen 2 rather than Gen 1

This Milwaukee is junk. I had two defective kits in a row right out of the box. I’m moving on to another brand since Milwaukee can’t seem to make a simple drill work. 1st had a bad battery. I was already mad that a new tool is not functional but I returned it to give them another chance. Second shows up and is even worse than the first one . I noticed the trigger was flopping and literally comes off the drill. I looked and it’s broke on the back side. The battery was bad on this one also and not only that something was hissing when I tried to charge it. Absolute junk. The overall build quality on these kits are not the same as my other Milwaukee stuff. Even the plastic looks cheaper. The batteries don’t even lock in the charger good like my other kits. I don’t what the deal is with these but they are aweful and seem like very low quality or even fakes. I didn’t purchase on eBay or amazon or some sketchy website I purchased on Home Depot’s own website and my local Home Depot even shipped the second replacement direct to my house.

Idk even know at this point. I’m already invested in soemthing like 7 Milwaukee tools for work and my. Drill chuck is going out so I needed a new drill and wanted a more compact drill. This unfortunately is not a good one. I’ll have to check and see if maybe there is another option. I really like Makita and I’ve never had a single problem out my Makita tools they just don’t have a good line up for my job. If I don’t find another Milwaukee option I may have to at least switch my drill over to Makita,Metabo or Flex.

@@Crystals_and_Witchcraft I decided to keep looking and I found a similar kit on acme tools. It’s the same compact drill charger and 2 batteries instead of one. This kit is fine no problems with it. The detent where the batteries lock in the charger feel normal and the batteries charge. Somethings definitely up with that Home Depot kit for some reason.

With the 800/805 they are in a different class power wise than these tools. And then with the 805 it’s almost an inch longer than the longest drill here. So While they are compact for more premium drills i feel these are in a different class.
