Railer makes a great 5 piece quick change version of this for 18$ now, you’re not just limited to the silicone grip ones anymore. I’ve tried the cheap ones on Amazon and even when they’re on sale for 6$ I’d take the 18$ railer brand every time, the quality is just so much better.

As an HVAC tradesmen I like the surge better for service calls and a few odd jobs here and there, it’s perfect for doing inspections and maintaining a quiet work place, specially with elderly people around, to me it feels more professional. The Gen 3 non Surge Driver is more suitable for full-on medium duty jobs where sound suppression or subtleness is not a necessity

It's probably tripping a short circuit or overload protection when using the 1 1/4" bits. Stalling out an electric motor is going to draw a huge current, and a higher capacity battery isn't going to fix that issue... only a higher power (or cell c-rate) will fix that. When they support PD100W charging, that's a good indication of when it will be capable.

Interesting concept, poor execution! Good testing and evaluation ‘Tinker,’ but on your closeups, I could see the questionable fit and finish and was not impressed. If they sort out the kinks, and improve the quality, this could be a game changer for some. Proprietary Batteries are a touchy area for manufacturers; They make a big profit on them, and know they have the Customer coming back for new ones. Cordless Tools are great to have, but the cost of ownership comes with it, like just about anything these days. Now I’m just babbling on, so take care and have a great Weekend!

Makita has had this for decades on DTP 141 and 140 and before that on BTP 141 and 140. After Makita but still for decades Pro Tool also had this and then Festool also for decades, and Fein is on the third generation with this so also for decades, the first one ASCM 18QX was crap, but since ASCM 18QM is very good and the third is ASCM 18-4 that uses the Bosch rails for packs. Milfucky sucky sucky is also on second or third gen of electronic torque limiter for the top of the line model. The previous one had an absurdly bad electronic torque limiter, and realy don't know about the last one.

I like that you used a very good assortment of long fasteners, I mean L o n g fasteners that I had no idea existed. 8inch? Who knew???? 😮😮❤. I have an DCF877 that works well for me, but I switched over to FLEX I l8ke their color scheme, rhe fact that they are more powerful is a big side benefit.

@@TinkerWithToolsyou can buy battery adaptors to run other brands of batteries in a tool
@MrMartinSchou
@MrMartinSchou 19 сағат бұрын
That's not the issue at hand. Let's say you have three DeWalt tools. Now you need a tool you don't have, and according to all the reviews you can find, the Milwaukee version of that tool is the best on the market and the DeWalt version performs about as well as Ryobi's version. The DeWalt version costs $399, the Milwaukee version costs $349, the Ryobi is $249. But you don't have any Milwaukee batteries, and you have three 5 Ah Dewalt batteries and an 8 Ah Dewalt battery. You're never going to buy the Milwaukee tool, because then you'd need to buy a Milwaukee battery and a Milwaukee charger on top of that. THAT is the problem. Once you've bought into one manufacturer's battery platform, you're stuck, because the cost of getting another brand's tools is far higher than just the cost of the tool. The tool companies know this, which is why their 18 volt battery systems, which all use battery cells from the same manufacturer, are incompatible with each other. Imagine for a moment, that your car would refuse to work if you put tyres on it that wasn't from that car manufacturer. Or used from that wasn't from that manufacturer. That'd just about be the dumbest and stupidest thing you could imagine. Now imagine watching someone saying "just buy the OEM fuel/tyres and call it a day".

So let me offer a few options. If you have Dewalt batteries already, I would almost recommend purchasing a the tool on Amazon for beneficial pricing. For me the best option is the Dewalt DCD800/805 (drill driver/hammer drill variant). This drill will provide plenty of performance and when buying the tool only, it's only about $10 more than the lesser Dewalt drills. If you don't already have Dewalt drills, you can still get that drill but the kits for it are typically a bit more expensive ($200-230). If you don't want to spend that my recommendation would be the Dewalt DCD799. The main reason for that over other models is just that it's more powerful than the drill driver versions like the 793/794. But it's shorter than the 798 that is sold at Lowes. Tool only it's about $100 but the single battery kit is about $140 online. You won't find that model at Lowe's because they sell specific models at certain stores only. Home Depot will carry it but the prices will be higher than online.

Some of the confusion may be due to retailer exclusivity. In the US, atomic and flexvolt are home depot exclusives so there is some redundancy and needless fragmentation. Dcd794 atomic sort of makes dcd793 redundant (794 clutch problems notwithstanding) but it can only only be sold at home depot, so other stores get the 793. Similarly dcf999 flexvolt is very similar to dcd998 power detect but allows home depot to have the "special", probably technically most powerful, drill in the lineup and use the exclusive FV batteries Otherwise theyre not helping by crowding the model numbers so much. The hammer versions typically increment model numbers by 5 over the standard drill driver but its kind of hard to know where older gen end and newer gen products begin - 790, 791 (795, 796 hammers) are older mid range drills, 793, 794 (798, 799 hammers) are newer entry level. Oh you want the hammer version of the older 777? Naturally, thatll be the 778 because why the hell not.
@TinkerWithTools
@TinkerWithTools 3 күн бұрын
Even they have seen the light. In the last few weeks they announced a cleaning up of their product lines and having one product line for everything. Honestly a big improvement. So far it seems there will still be some exclusivity in terms of Home Depot getting the combo kit version of a new tool and Lowe's getting the tool only for example but having the same tools at both stores is a big improvement.

@TinkerWithTools
@TinkerWithTools 3 күн бұрын
There are others that have elements of it but I am guessing it just comes down to cost control. Ridgid built their platform on it and if they ever tried to take it away it would kill them. But you have the founders warranty from Flex that doesn't give lifetime batteries but it does do three replacements. That was only supposed to be the first few months it was available but so far it's been extended every year.

Personally I've had Makita 18v for years and now I'm mixing it with Bosch due to the fact that they have eclipsed makita in thier drill and impact quality. Also the multi tool is lovely and although the starlock isn't the coolest especially when buying blades its still a great tool. And the sds hammers are still an industry leader. Some comparison of models from Dewalt and Milwaukee between US and EU market: - Dewalt in the US has 20V in EU 18V (yes are the same), in the US the torque(?) reading is UWO for the drills but in EU is given in Nm* ( which is easily convertible to Lbs-in) * it is always indicated in dewalt European website to every tool specs. As an example the dcd706 sold in EU has a torque indication of 57,5 Nm (= 509 Lbs-in) and has a metal chuck For Dewalt the model names are the same in the US and Europe* to one very recent single exeption: the latest dewalt dcd799 has here in Europe another name: dcd100Y (=Dewalt 100 years celebration) and is rated 68 Nm (602 lbs-in or 50 fbs-ft) * the dewalt tools sold in Europe, specially when it's the complete kit, the tstak is included within. - Unlike Dewalt, Milwaukee has all its models names different in the US and Europe, the 3404 is in EU under the name M12 FPD2 and if comes within a kit it is called M12 FDP2-602X (means with 2× 6Ah + Charger + carrying case) Examples: the 2555 is M12 FIWF12 (IW = Impact wrench, 12 = 1/2 Anvil) The 2962 sold in EU is under the following name: M18 FMTIW2F12 Why dewalt in the US are 20 V and in Europe 18V ? and we know that is in reality the same voltage ! Why Milwaukee for abolute identical models they have different names in different geographic area? Marketing reasons, geographically-dependant strategies?! For both brands: they are more expensive in EU than in the US! I have the dcd706 with a metalic chuck, didn't have the possibility to compare it to the milwaukee M12 But I have a reference point for comparison, I have at home its bigger brother the 999 and the 706 proved to be very powerful for its small size. I've got a chance to compare the 12V IWs of both of these two big brands: the dcf901 and the European 2555. They are both, despite their very compact size, excellent: I've loosen my car's lug nuts (22mm) tightened at 165 Nm (1460 Lbs-in/122 ft-lbs) within 3-4 seconds, without too much and annoying lengthy impacting: the 2555 is slightly faster but not worth considering, so I decided to keep the 901, it is cheaper and I have dewalt batteries, it doesn't take too much space to carry it all time in the car unlike the highly capable mid-torque dcf891 that I have at home
@TinkerWithTools
@TinkerWithTools 6 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing. As to why they tout 20v vs 18v, I think it all comes down to marketing and what is allowed in different markets. As for the Milwaukee models, I know that in the past, while tools were fairly similar there were subtle differences between them. One example was that using European model numbers to source a replacement chuck on an M18 drill, ended up with an incompatability because the models used different size threading for the chuck. No clue why, but I am guessing that sort of thing is the reason for the model number difference.
