Can Muslims Thrive without a Caliphate? with Dr Uthman Badar

The Thinking Muslim

Күн бұрын

The issue of the caliphate has recently made a resurgence within Muslim discourse. For nearly 100 years the Muslim ummah has been without a caliphate, and many have come to the view that the world of empires is behind us, and we now must embrace the era of nation-states. Yet the issue remains a live one, Islam and Muslims have remained tortured by our lack of ability to resolve some of the most intractable problems we face - leading to the suggestion that establishing a post-nation state brings together our resources, people and potential.
Dr. Uthman Badar has been thinking about the concerns of the caliphate. He is the lead editor at the Ummatics Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Western Sydney University in 2023, where he currently teaches. He is also an active Muslim community member in Sydney, Australia, with over two decades of engagement in grassroots activism and da’wah.

Even a start-up company has CEO. Point to me a FORTUNE 500 company without a CEO. When it comes to money these people recognise the importance of long-term leadership, direction and devotion, but when it comes to running the affairs OF THE LARGEST RELIGIOUS GROUP IN THE WORLD. People are suddenly like "oh there's no need for leadership". Either they're evil or ignorant. How many Muslims have been murdered since our last Caliph? How many lands invaded? How many injustices have we faced. We believed the rhetoric of the hypocrites once, look where it took us. Never will we believe it again.

This conversation is a testament to the thought-provoking content that The Thinking Muslim continues to produce. Dr. Uthman Badar's insights on the notion of a caliphate, and its relevance in our contemporary era of nation-states, were nothing short of enlightening. As Muslims, our faith guides us through the complexities of modern society, and these kinds of discussions, though challenging, are crucial for our intellectual and spiritual growth. Dr. Badar's scholarly perspective, backed by his deep understanding of Philosophy and Islamic studies, shines a fresh light on the issue. His analysis of a post-nation state system to resolve some of the most pressing challenges faced by the Muslim ummah offers a unique perspective. This indeed stirs the thought that even if the world is moving towards individual nation-states, there might still be room for unified efforts under a spiritual banner to address these intractable problems. As we navigate these complicated times, we should indeed consider all options, utilize our resources, and channel our potential for the betterment of the ummah. The dialogue Dr. Badar initiates here sparks contemplation and shows us the importance of engaging in such discourse. Looking forward to more of such enlightening content from The Thinking Muslim. Peace and blessings to all. 🌙✨ Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

*We can all agree that these matters should be handled by scholars. I have a sincere question though... What if we live in a world where prominent scholars are being jailed merely for speaking haqq and advising the rulers? Why are you not recognizing this current problem?**It's been three years since Sheikh Fahd al-Qadi died in Saudi prison due to medical negligence by the authorities.* Sheikh al-Qadi was arrested in 2016 because of a PRIVATE letter of advice he sent to the Saudi Royal Court in which he described violations committed by the Ministry of Education. He was known for his work with the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. *He was sent to prison because he advised the ruler PRIVATELY! What will Madkhalis say next? Advise the rulers in your hearts and dreams.*

It is right that an intelligent person does not undervalue three [types of people]: the scholars, the rulers, and [his Muslim] brothers. Whoever undervalues the scholars will lose his afterlife, whoever undervalues the rulers will lose his worldly life, and whoever undervalues his brothers loses his good character and conduct.

What, as important as issues like putting food on the table, looking after your elders or bringing up your children to be good mumin musolman? This Caliphate obsession amongst political activists does nothing to help the bad situation of Muslims worldwide. All this hypothetical imperialistic and aggressive hyperventilating about gaining political power does is give ammunition to the far right. The Caliphates of old were merely empires where the local leader used religion to legitimise their rule. Most Muslims of their time did not recognise their claims. There was little religious about it. The Ottomans didn't even do Hajj. Ever.

@@TheThinkingMuslim- interesting discussion, but is the Caliphate really the most pressing matter facing Muslims or is their lack of connection to and understanding of the Qur'an a much bigger problem? Why does anyone expect the Muslims to strive to resurrect the Caliphate if they don't firstly grasp the basis of their belief because they are alienated from their core religious instructions?

@@ankhmorpok1497 we can have education systems in place in a calphate offering free education at all levels as was the practice of some islamic caliphates in the past, also those education systems would not be susceptible to ideological attacks by lgbt because they’re officially sanctioned by the islamic caliphate. Also there would be no medical industrial complex forcing children to get surgeries to change their gender because obviously this is not islamic. The media apparatus of the caliphate would broadcast islamic content and ban kufr ideas that are causing depression anxiety social ailments such as porn, etc. The problems we see in todays kufr systems are a result of the absence of a caliphate

@@ankhmorpok1497 *The secular West’s double standards are glaringly evident from how they deal with “irrationality”. When this so-called irrationality is linked with religion it’s a problem. However, when it comes to things like “gender fluidity” it’s completely fine. Another example that can be mentioned is how the “clairvoyant” Edgar Cayce was extremely popular during the early 20th-century.* And it’s the same story when it comes to aliens. The secular West, unable to fight its innate tendency to believe in the ghayb, proposes the likely existence of a non-human species which could communicate with our world - the same way Muslims believe in the jinn! Of course all of this is done in the name of their own religion: science. They even have their own priests in the form of astrobiologists etc. This belief of theirs is of the same nature as ours, even if they try and add some pseudo-empiricist spice: there may be tangible elements pointing towards the existence of aliens. They fail to grasp how we too say there are “tangible elements” regarding the influences of the jinn within our world.*

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to some of the speakers opinions, which were not hard hitting unrealistic caliphate evangelism. I do think the question of Fard Kifaaya needs to be widely understood. It's unfair to place responsibility on the mother drowned in debt and children or the illiterate worker doing just enough to feed his family. The repsonbility falls upon those who are in such positions, then those who are capable, then those around them to engage and pretest change. We often say the whole community is to blame, relinquishing repsonbility from the Ulema and Muslim leaders. We owe them our allegiance but not a blueprint.

We never had a united Muslim role except during the tone of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and the khilafah-e-rashideen upon whom Allah is pleased. And even the last ottoman one was dystopic with Ottoman putting mentally deficient relatives under house arrest. The tanzinat reforms. Mu'awiyyah upon whom Allah is pleased rebellion against Ali upon whom Allah is pleased. The Seljuks and Ayubids. There have always been multiple Muslim dynasties at the same time that were distinct from each other. The best way to go is an EU type union

This hadith sums up my thoughts on this video. What a sad state of affairs we are in. Islam is simple to understand and those with deep knowledge don't confuse while explaining it. A clear sign of someone who doesn't have understanding is he confuses, in my opinion. The hadith states, my translation, "the Prophet SAW said verily Allah SWT doesn't seize knowledge by removing it from the people but instead he seizes it by taking the souls of those with knowledge until the people take ignorant people as their heads, they then make verdicts without knowledge there upon people are miss guided and miss guide others." It not that people don't have knowledge around at that moment, just that no one takes them seriously and people start taking wafflers too seriously and ignoring those with knowledge, after those who were scholarly (knowledgeable) and recognized as scholars passed. SAD

The most frequently expressed complaint men have about women is that, women are always trying to change them. When a woman loves man, she feels responsible to assist him growing, try to help him improve the way he does things. She forms the home improvement committee and he becomes her primary focus. No matter how much he resist her help, she persists. Waiting for an opportunity to help him or tell him what to do. She thinks she's nurturing him while he feels he's being controlled, instead he wants her acceptance. The most frequently expressed complaint women have about men is that men don't listen. Either man completely ignores her when she speaks or he listens for few beats, assesses what bothering her and then he proudly puts on his mr fix-it hat and offer her a solution to make her feel better. No matter how many times she tells him that he's not listening, he doesn't get it and he keeps doing the same thing. She wants empathy. He thinks she wants solutions.

When the Abbasid Caliph was under permanent house arrest under his own semi-pagan Turkic slaves, what was the point of the Caliph? Or when the qaramita managed to sack Makkah, steal the black stone, shatter it and keep it for 21 years, while the Caliph al Muqtadir was too busy with wine, music and the harem to actually bother governing. Resulting in the restoration of alMutadidto be replaced with feudalism. Allowing the Shia daylamite mountain tribes to make the Caliph their puppet, followed by the semi-pagan nomadic Turks from the Aral sea for over a century. And the Fatimids and Cordoba made their own caliphates, diluting the title. And al Mamun a so called 'Sunni' Caliph was a Shi'ite Mutazilite. Under some Umayyad Caliphs atrocities were committed against the family of the prophet... Many other caliphs were men of no moral standing... What is the point of a faasiq, drunkard, potentially homosexual (Walid ii, Al Amin) who knows so little about Islam, being the head of the Muslim world? When Salahudin took Egypt he took the title of Khaadim alHaramain ashSharifayn. And he ensured his Hajj delegation entered Makkah before the Caliphs. Clearly showing the lack of concern for the Caliph. The Caliph, "head of the Muslim world" also sent almost no support whatsoever to fight against the Crusaders, despite having ousted the Seljuks from Iraq. If he isn't helping against Crusaders, far worse than Israel, What's the point of him? Then the Mongols killed the Caliph, with nobody coming to his aid, depsite his pleas. Then the Mamluk slaves created a Cairo Caliphate. However he was more powerless then ever. Only brought out when the Mamluks needed him for a slight legitimacy boost. While the Mamluk sultans kept Khaadim alHaramain for themselves, showing they viewed that title as more important. There is dispute how and when the Ottoman took the title of Caliph. And even then they rarely used the title, mainly against the Moroccans who disregarded the Ottoman claim, since teh Moroccans were Sharifan. The title only really began to be used after the Ottomans lost Crimea in 1774. But the modern concept comes more from Abdulhamid ii attempt at uniting the Muslim world against the colonists. Finally the fall of the Caliphate left a hole in the Muslim world. Leading to a recent Caliphate resurgence within Muslim minds. But ever since the Anarchy at Samarra in 861, the Caliph was weak and powerless. And ever since the end of the Mihna, the Caliph lost all religious/judicial power to the scholars. I feel like many of us have a very naïve concept of Caliphate.

Jazakallah khair, although I may disagree with some of your framing, many Muslim historians would question your point about when the caliphate title was adopted by the Ottomans - - I think your broader point of not over-romanticising history is so important. That said, one has to survey Islam’s long history without allowing the aberrations and excesses to blinker our assessment. The period of the Sahabah was full of challenges, yet most Muslims are able to observe that Islam cam not for angels but for human beings. I value your comments and hope to engage further brother. MJ

@@TheThinkingMuslim I think its important to distinguish between historians and activists.‎ The historical record does not conflict with the revealed texts, which state that the caliphate ended 30 ‎years after the Prophet's ‎ﷺ‎ passing, whereafter the umma was ruled by dynastic succession - exactly as ‎he ‎‏ ﷺ‎ foretold.‎ What we’re seeing in the last 100 years or so is a back-projection by activists of an ahistoric, romanticized conception of the caliphate. This is similar to how Christian evangelists will reframe the ‎historical Jesus to confirm to their pre-conceived theology which was developed centuries after the fact.‎ As regards the Ottomans specifically, the reality is, as was mentioned above, that it was largely following ‎the treaty of Küçük Kaynarca in 1774 that the Porte instituted a trans-sultanate, papal-esque caliphal role ‎as consolation for the loss of Black Sea coastal territories. AbdulHamid II similarly invoked a spiritual caliphal office to garner international “ummatic” ‎support in light of the crises he was having to deal with. ‎ But outside such episodes, the archives make it clear that it was the Chingisid bloodline that the ‎Ottomans sought legitimacy through, not the Islamic institution of the khilafa. In fact, their Maturidi ‎creed precluded them from claiming the caliphate in a real, religious sense. For the the bulk of their history, when the house of Osman did wear the caliphal crown, they do so ceremonially.

@KnowledgeNorth lots of issues with your comment, there are many assumptions, strawmanning and sectarianism. Assumptions are despite the history and for arguments sake let's take your narrative, then this has no issue with if the system is based on Islam ie Khilafah, sultanate, amperage etc. These terms are synonymous. Rulership by kingship doesn't negate the khilfah, as long as the leader gains bayah from the ahle wall al aqd. The issue of being matarudi, ashari or atteri.. by consensus all recognise as being Muslim. So once again strawman.

I'd also be interested in considering the takeover of lands by Muslims in the past for example when Jerusalem fell Saladin took it 100 years later. He was present at the right time at the right place with the right set of conditions so he was able to take it. This is not taking anything away from him but it wasn't just one man. The Ottoman state came together in 1299 and the ottomans conquered constantinopal a 150 years later. It wasn't a one day job. They failed miserably many times so we mustn't think in the short term we mustn't think of establishing Khalifa within 10 years or 20 years. You can also argue the fact that since Jerusalem was under the the Muslim Mamluks, it gave further rise and power to the ottomans as they did not have to worry about concrete already conquered lands. Likewise we should work on expanding by piecemeal, e.g. Supporting pakistan, Turkey and the likes.

A caliphate is a political system that adheres to the full implementation of Islamic laws and tenets. The sovereignty in this systems doesn't belong to a king or institution or a person, but it only belongs to Allah/God being the only legislator. Sharia give us details about how the rulers should govern, and the rulers are checked and balanced by the Scholars/Ulama, that his legitimacy as a ruler comes only from how he follows the Islamic laws and tenets. If the rulers violate such tenets he may impeached by Ulama/Scholars whom also reflect the public sentiments about this ruler. In the modern nation state, the sovereignty belongs to the king, like Britain, or people like popular democracy which delegated sovereignty representatives whom composed of individuals or groups. When sovereignty belongs to a king or representatives regardless of how much check and balance measures you have, it can easily be manipulated or corrupted or co-opted, but you cannot co-opted institutions or laws that directly comes from Allah/God, because, you cannot violate or change Allah legislation without being ousted. The atheist secular state of Britain just crowned its king with medieval period ceremony, and no one objected or said a word, so a Caliphate isn't out of fashion. Also, Britain still have power over the British commonwealth. So, why Muslims shouldn't have theirs own state, especially for being a religious conservative community that won't accept the liberal materialistic degenerate agenda. The future of the nation state is uncertain, what next is the Civilizational-based state or ungoverned spaces, I suggest to read The Clash of Civilizations by Samuel P. Huntington and Foundations of Geopolitics by Aleksandr Dugin for more political imagination. The global warming and its calamities will impede the ability of the current nation state to impose control everywhere creating an opportunity for Muslims around the world to create their own state. So, yes Muslims won't survive without a state that represent them globally.

Sovereignty should always belong to the people. Not a small group of unelected people eg. scholars, political or military leaders etc who impose their own political, social and economic views on the populace through their own individual understanding of Islam. Muslims are a billion-strong and a diverse group where there are different views on micro (eg. are prawns halal) to macro (should interest in economic transactions be permitted) issues. Secular democratic systems allow the public to have their say and some influence on pulic matters. Even flawed democracies with weak institutions like Bangladesh, Turkey Indonesia, Malaysia, Bosnia and Pakistan have massive public engagement with the political process. Some vibrant free media and courts that sometimes hold the powerful to account. Most people in those countries would never agree to give up their sovereignty, resources and political autonomy to a Caliph. Look at Syria and its civil war to see what would happen if you impose a system. If you have to rely on global catastrophe Mad Max scenario where we de-evolve in terms of our economy, technology and rights to have your Caliphate then what more need I say about the inferiority of such a system?

@@ankhmorpok1497 Muslim scholars aren't uneducated people, you should learn more about Islam, and being Muslim means that you are already familiar with Islamic laws since it is a prerequisite to become a better Muslim so you can conduct your thoughts and behaviors in serving of Allah. On contrary to the western model, where people are mostly ignorant of their laws, this Western model is pretty new that democracy is only 50 years old or less there, if you think about WW2!!!, in the western model, a few powerful people with control of public opinions venues and security apparatuses and economy can shape the public into whatever the believe is right, and you can see what these deviant ruling elites do by imposing their rainbow freaks agenda. The caliphate model survived for 1200 years longer than the Roman empire, democracy in the West is only resurrected after was abolished for 2000 years when Sparta occupied Athens, and only resurrected 200 years ago, so I think Muslim can resurrect their Caliphate after a 100 years of its last one!!, although the Roman model survived in the western countries in its laws and institutions. So, why Muslims cannot have their own state?! do you know that Israel defines itself as a Jewish state and it uphold their Judaic laws(Halakha) there, why it is good for them but not for us?!

*The secular West’s double standards are glaringly evident from how they deal with “irrationality”.

Caliphate cannot be a single person, it can only be a committee selected by all muslims around the world. Not only the muslim majority nations, but also the muslim minority in the western countries must have a say. We know from history after Ali B. Abi Talib RA, bulk of the rulers of islamic states did not deserve the title of 'imam al adil' So the fate of Ummah can not be decided by a single person. First of all, this is impossible! any effort to establish this kind of caliphate will just divide ummah ! Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran , all of them claim that it is their right to be the leader of Ummah and it seems that none of them will obey the other.. The only way is that Mulim nations and representatives of muslims in western countries must raise their voice to be more effective in OIC and it can be used as a platform to promote a fairer world.
