We're always told that the grass is greener on the other side or to try and see the glass as half full rather than half empty. But Jae and AleXa wonder how helpful is it really to always stay so positive? Sometimes we may just be sweeping things under the rug a little too much.

i feel like jae was more frustrated w like the performative positivity that you see a lot within creators and in their relationship w fans. Like the frustration of seeing the public suddenly switch from hating on artists and criticizing everything they do to “i hope you get well soon” “take the time you need we love you” once idols say they’re taking a mental health break. like why did it take the artist speaking up for you to realize that they were being negatively affected by harsh comments thats literally just logic, but people only take action once its gets the spotlight
@celestialsoph
@celestialsoph 3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely agree with that. So often, you see people showering an artist/celebrity with positive comments once they announce something about their mental health, but fail to realize they are part of the problem

Reminded me of how Jae and Sungjin would be super open with is on their thoughts and especially when Jae talked about role models. Dang, this hits home. Thank you again, Jae and Alexa. :)

If positivity means being blind to the whole issue at foot....yes, it can. If positivity is being insensitive to another's issue, yes it can be toxic. If someone expects another to be positive, toxic.

As much as I understand Jae's point, I think when it comes to people on the internet, we can't really blame them for saying words that might be heard as toxic positivity. Because basically they are just strangers looking at people in spotlight, trying to support them and whatever, and the least they can do is to wish their idols be in a good condition or be better cause they are not in posistion to help their idols out directly, you know what I mean? It's totally different if the positivity comes from someone close. We can definately say this friend of ours is toxic if we tell our problems and what we get is just normative response as you'll be fine, etc. Again, everything is all about context.
@emi9691

yea over the internet it's slight different than in reality but like you gotta put youself in their shoes in order to understand what's even going on yk instead of spitting random things like "you'll be fine soon, it's not such a big deal" and stuff..

@@colonthree9874 Everyones chat was such an asshole to him, calling him a pussy and kpop andy (this usually happened when Jae killed their favorite streamer since Jae actually did really well and landed really good shots) and received so many false accusations. For example, he was accused of stream sniping (basically watching someone else's stream to get info on exactly what your enemy is doing) because of his TEAMMATE being taken out of context and sent to a big streamer and that same streamer started receiving death threats and more and because Jae wasn't streaming he wasn't hit as hard but received so many nasty comments. He was also accused of code raiding (going into someone else's stream to get the codes to open locked doors in a base) because he broke into someones base (which is allowed) when in reality all he did was literally walk into someones base because they forgot to lock their doors. Every time things like this happened, the streamer who falsely accused him cursed and him and yelled at him which caused their live stream viewers to also shit talk him and ALSO go onto Jaes OWN STREAM to shit talk him and call him bad. Jae would go up thousands of viewers just so people could shit talk him when he didn't do anything.

For the statement of "that could have been worse" or "you have it better" I really compare that to myself than anyone else because I feel I need to take a step back and look at the situation that I'm dealing with. "It's not the worse that could happen", or "a person at this exact moment could be going through things that are 10 times worse than what I'm going through" are the type of thoughts I associate with that.

Honestly, I really have a hard time empathizing myself with others' problems and I always try to be careful around people whose hearts are more sensitive than mine. That's why, when someone tells me about their problems, I always remind myself not to compare their problems with mine nor irresponsibly said that everything will get better. I might not help them that much, but by asking them what can I do to make them feel better and listening to their problems wholeheartedly, I think it'll help them much more than saying "everything happens for a reason".

Or someone else's. Doesn't matter. And even more so these days..with everything that's going on with the world..everything is NOT OKAY. You CAN feel negative emotions every now and then..you do not need to be a sunny positive person every frigging day. Don't deny somebody their right to feel what they're feeling. It's unhealthy. 👊

I have a different opinion here. When someone says “I love you”, it could just literally mean they love you. When someone says “Let’s look on the bright side”, it could just mean they want to cheer you up. People take years to be a good counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist. Not everyone can give you the perfect advice all the time, and if sometimes your friends tell you to “look on the bright side” or “it could be worse”, that could also mean that they just want to cheer you up but don’t know how to do it properly. And for me it doesn’t feel right to call these comments “toxic positivity”, because if they really want to let you down or invalidate your hardships, they wouldn’t be the persons you are sharing these insecurities with in the first place.
@thearchivist1437
@thearchivist1437 3 жыл бұрын
in an ideal situation i would totally agree. but the truth is that a lot of people have too many experiences where its not just plain "i love you, and i honestly want you to be happy". its closer to "im saying this even though i commented hateful things a day ago". the sad thing is, all it takes is one bad day to totally change your pov

I agree with you especially in idols situations where fans would not understand what really happened and idols can’t open up, fans would send this kind of messages to cheer up their favorites cause this is the only thing they can help with~~ But in really close friendship/relationship situation it may seems more like they don’t care about the other person...

I also agree with u, i genuinely believe that everything happens because of a reason, i oftenly say that to comfort a friend, and i always gave a reason/example that makes sense after that, and usually, they also take it coz they can see the brighter side after i explain the reason/example. U said a really good opinion here, coz not everybody is a good at communicating/choosing the right words to say to make everybody comfortable...

I don't like jumping on bandwagons and forming my opinion on someone or something without knowing more about an event/them, because I don't really think anything ever is black and white. There's a lot of morally gray areas in most things that happen in the world, especially on the internet. But...the thing about cancel culture is that it's contagious and it's really easy to get swept up in it and no matter how much...you try not to or how much you think you're smart. But, anyway. My point is: We're humans, we get swept up in things, it happens. But, we should always, always try not to jump on trends or bandwagons without finding more about their background, particulars etc. Because, we often don't realize how much our words and actions, even on the web, have an effect on another person's life and mental health.

I think responding to hate comments in grace isn't toxic positivity. It involves choosing your battles: Do I put this person in their place? Will they actually listen though? What will it help? The hate commenter could just be a troll, or if responding to them even with reason ends up in a full-on improper discourse, and it's apparent that you're basically talking to a wall... there's nowhere to go, and your energy and emotions have been exhausted by then. (Also, artists do represent their group and/or their label too.) Toxic positivity, I think, is being so out of touch with reality and not wanting to share in others' burdens.

i RARELY share problems to anyone even family or friends. almost never. and when i did, i always hear phrases like "well you're still luckier than me" or "if you compare it to other people" or "that's not much of a problem". and i ALWAYS regret sharing something in the first place. i was like am i not even allowed to feel these emotions?

i feel like in the case of insults, it's okay to be look on the positive side, but if it's like constructive criticism, then it becomes toxic positivity

It’s like for me, I can’t tell myself: everything will be okay. I have to tell myself that: it will get better. Which means things will ‘be’ better and will stay like that. It will ‘get’ better, which means it won’t disappear but I’ll feel better till the next time. Unlike some of my friend that need to hear ‘everything will be okay’

Toxic positivity is one type of what we call emotional avoidance, coz this emotional avoidance from the word itself is like running away from negative emotions, its negative so we don't want to face it, but people who keeps running away from this emotions will not learn how to face and cope up with it, and that's not right because once we got in to something really heavy like maybe loosing someone we important to us, it'll be really really hard to get back up on our feet, that may be because we were not practiced or used to cope up with certain types of negative situations due to always running away or distracting ourselves from this
