I’m a mother and had a hard time watching parents making their child’s sexuality about themselves. I’m sure majority of the parents had the same wishes for their unborn child: to be happy, healthy and safe. And it’s so disappointing to see that they have forgotten the simple wishes they once had when their child was still in the womb.

As a mother, I will respect and accept what my child is. I rather care more about how my child lives well and happily. Society outside can be cruel, so I want to ensure I can be a warm home and safe space for my child. Life is too short to live selfishly and force everything to be your way.

Firstly, I am sixty-four years old, a Catholic and I am straight! This LGBT issue have been around for so long! Every time, the issue is brought up, .... the flood gates opened as well! From my perspective, homosexuality have been around since Biblical times! In nature, some species of fishes change their sex whenever, it's required of them! I am not asking or encouraging humans to do the same! Just be more open minded!! Don't judge a person by their looks or inclinations but by their inner self (their hearts)! Let GOD do the judging! LGBT are people too, with feelings for Love etc..! I have no issues with them holding hands, embracing or kissing in public only don't grope and kiss like you are doing porn! That's goes for straights as well! As for the topic on sex, for me personally that their life not ours! I am neither objecting or condoning it! Personally, I find LGBT a colourful lot! They are not only humorous, some are very talented in the arts (acting, singing especially)! They bring a different perspective on life etc. which I find very refreshing! They are also more patient, kind and big hearted on account on what they have to go through in their life (growing up)! Very empathetic people! The bottom line here is - be more accepting of them, let them have a life too, don't ignore or pretend that they don't exists and that this issue will just go away on its own! It never has or ever will! How you treat your own people, Family shows the True person , you are! LGBT, Straights ....we are all Made By God! Have a Great Life & Day💕🧑🏻‍🦳

The part of Fauzi and his dad was powerful, especially when the dad revealed that he had known ever since Fauzi was a child. It brought tears to my eyes

I had a gay friend during Army. He didn't tell the Military since he would be excluded from National Service and there's a stigma going around for NS defaulters. A group of us in the company went for a make-up route march in preparation of the final 24k route march. It was really boring, 20k or 16k around the 400m running tracks. During the march he shared when he discovered he was gay, how he found his first boyfriend and some nsfw topics that I won't share. We were all very happy and interested in his stories. After all, we had so much in common and have so much shared experience, a difference in sexuality seems so trivia.

This argument that LGBT should not be tolerated because it's against religion is nonsense. Taoists are not Hindus. Hindus are not Christians. Going by the Christian definition, Hindus and Taoists worship idols and are therefore "against" their religion. And despite that, we do not allow Christians to go around condemning Hindus/Taoists and insisting that their religions are "wrong". You don't have to like LGBT people. But you do not have the right to tell others how they live their lives even if you disagree with them. As soon as we allow such behaviour, Singaporean society will crumble really quickly. Cultural and religious tolerance is the very foundation on which this country is based. If you cannot understand this, then you do not understand what it means to be Singaporean.

It's every parents' worry their children's future. Never stop worry. It took my mom years to get to know me and fully supports me being myself. It's the greatest luck to be accepted and loved in this community. Thank you, mom.

As a Soka Buddhist, our religion encompasses everyone regardless of their sexuality. However, even within our religion, the opinions on LGBT vary depending on how we were brought up together with our experiences. We certainly have a long way to go in Singapore. I must say it’s easier for strangers to accept LGBT ideas because it’s not their family and they don’t have a stake in your sexuality but not family because the stakes are high.

Thank you so much for making the documentary despite it being not easy, as you've said. I was raised a Catholic and since I was a teenager some two decades ago, I've felt this sense of unfairness or being unsettled, about what's so wrong about two consenting adults who are not hurting anybody acting upon their love. Most people I talked about this brushed it aside or didn't bother to have a stand, because outwardly I present as cis het and it is not deemed to be my problem; like, they think I was just concerned about it like people are concerned about global warming - general issues that vaguely affect us. Twenty years ago, having such a multi-faceted documentary on CNA was unthinkable and I'm glad things have changed enough. I'm so glad that people are thinking deeply about it now.

I can really feel the pain and suffering of repression from the LGBT interviewees and I'm thankful that CNA gave them a platform to express themselves considering this is quite a controversial topic, I also applaud the interview guy for being so emotionally intelligent and making them feel less judged, also kudos to (some of) their parents for seeing beyond their sexuality and loving them regardless because they are their own flesh and blood, most importantly what matters it's their own happiness and living as their true self ❤️ it's so refreshing to see.. But at the same time sad to see the negative and narrow views of many people, not the mention the self hate some LGBT people have with themselves :(

Thank you CNA for releasing this documentary. I am an ally and Singaporean who moved to the Netherlands recently. It is the first country to legalize gay marriage and you can really tell how open the country is towards the LGBTQ+ community. About half the people I know are openly LGBTQ+ and it is the norm to accept and embrace them without question. I was once having a conversation with my Dutch friend about how people here are so accepting of the LGBTQ+ community and he said, "Because why wouldn't you? I don't see a difference between love between straight and non-straight people." He said that he had been raised like that from young, which is something that sounded shocking to me as I had been raised in a more conservative society, and to add on, in a Catholic family. Being friends with people who are LGBTQ+ here has completely opened my mind and made me realize that Singapore has a long way to come in terms of achieving a more progressive stance and mindset. I look forward to the day that people accept LGBTQ+ people without question, so that my Singaporean LGBTQ+ friends can come out without fear of judgement and openly express themselves in Singapore.

Bravo to CNA for this multi-faceted documentary! It pretty much covered the views of different people related to the LGBTQ community. I had tears rolling down my cheeks when Fauzi and his dad hugged each other. That was a powerful scene. And that is a very good mufti. Even the way he speaks brings peace and calm. We need to be more understanding, especially towards our loved ones. It's sad to hear the anonymous dad saying that he will not stop helping his son, when all he wanted is for his son to "change". I think in this case, the only way to help his son will be to stop "helping" him. Spare himself and his son the agony of having to wrestle with how others perceive them and accept things as they are. Hope there will be a good outcome for them and most others in the same situation.

I was brought up to believe that we should treat everybody equally and show respect to those different to us. I simply cannot fathom why so many others seem unable to do this.

7:38 i grew up watching movies with straight characters, read novels with straight characters, etc., basically i grew up in a society where other sexualities were not given attention and yet i am still gay.. so his statement came from a place of ignorance.. and no you can't just wake up the next day and choose to be gay after seeing a man kissing a man from a movie. You can pretend and pose as straight all your life or even marry and have kids, but you will never completely remove the attraction of the same sex.

I am enjoying CNA's documentaries, they're all very relevant and relatable. I am from the Philippines and I see a lot of similarities that Singapore and the Philippines are facing, like this topic. I am a transgender woman and I see all the similar challenges we face (LGBTQ+ Communities) here in the Philippines from this documentary. But I can say that Philippines is more accepting compared to Singapore based from this video.

I honestly don’t give a fk if my family or society accept it or not…but what I want is marriage/insurance/healthcare/housing rights. Honestly a lot of Singapore talents left the country because of this. A few years ago when PM visited SF, he asked what would attract the talents at Silicon Valley back home, and this was one of the main problem that was brought up. This is also a reason why I rather be in US than Singapore even though US ain’t that great at all….but not all are privilege or lucky enough to be in another country to sort another life that could give them and their partners the rights I mentioned above…

"The sex act is wrong, but the person is not" -- so what, the person has to be celibate? So painful to watch.

I understand how parents are worried about their kids being part of LGBT community. They want their kids to be “normal”. But as I became older, I realised being straight doesn’t mean anything. I have seen the marriages of straight couples becoming havoc. There were cases of adultery, domestic violence, false accusations. Families were destroyed because of these irresponsible partners/parents. If LGBT couples are really in love and commit to the relationship, why not? They might even be better partners / parents than straight ppl and we shouldn’t judge them based on their sexuality. In fact there are straight ppl who just fucked up other ppl’s life in real life.

For me, as a heterosexual male, I really don't give a damn if you are a dude who likes other dudes, a lady who likes ladies, or someone who are attracted to literally anyone(pansexual). I've seen a cute gay male couple who were trying to be lowkey PDA-ing on the train but I can tell they were afraid or nervous but they still were like rubbing each other's hands, stroking hair all that whilst constantly eyeing all directions and stuff, and I was literally smiling at them to signal to them that at least for that moment they have nothing to be nervous about..and to be honest it really was cute to see. All I give a damn about is whether you are a decent human being with basic courtesy and manners. Let's all try to live in peace and harmony, for real.

If you do the same survey in Thailand, the result would be so much different. I think both culture and religion play a huge role on this topic. Obviously the majority of Thai people are Buddhist, but their views would be on a more-tolerant view than Buddhist Singaporeans in this survey. That’s because Thai culture is more tolerant on this taboo.

An excellent programme. Certainly a very difficult issue but I am glad the discussion has started. I think more needs to be explored, such as issues with regards ego, hypocrisy etc ; the issues which can be found in the history of civilization which have implications on this modern age. Religion, culture and their hold on society and civilizations and their very own hypocrisy need to be explored more.

I feel this film was made with such love for humanity as a whole "regardless" of who we fall for - so peaceful and inspiring. Bravo!

I do find one group unrepresented, the people who choose to leave their faith.

The more people talk about sensitive and contentious issues, the more likely that old norms will fall and new norms will be created. The process is painful but this paradigm shift is inevitable in Singapore's quest for global talent. Singapore just cannot afford to paint an image of it being conservative and unwelcoming of LGBT. The more you fight against it, the more painful it will be for you.

Hi Cheryl Tay, I felt exactly the same way as you about the double life for about 10 years after I came out to them.....I moved out after 10 years. But even now, I still feel the hurt and pain even though after moving out, they seemed to be more understanding and concerned "with strings attached". In my mind, the gap is now almost irreconcilable. That's something that we may just have to live with for the rest of our lives.

TBH....this "documentary" did not share much other than whats already out there(Parental struggles, Religious conflicts, etc). The POVs is, ofcourse, lacking in representation. There's ALWAYS an aesthetic over quality. Nobody from the Indian community? Like...again? But it lowkey shows the way SG is. No matter what the issues are or the community in question, indians are ALWAYS not thought of in mainstream media. Someone who is NOT from some social media or asian-washed. Its actually worse to be Indian AND queer in SG.

To all the LGBTQ+ people who see this comment: Love yourselves for who you are, and be the very best version of yourself so that you can be the lighthouse for others who may be still struggling.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I had a friend came out to me a decade ago and at the time, the internet didn’t have much information on LGBT. I’m glad that with globalization, topics like this can be made available online and regardless of what religion we are, we should always teach love and support for everyone regardless.

My family is like Cheryl's. Maybe I am more cold-hearted, but I don't think a family that emotionally manipulates you is even family. But a lot of asian families are dysfunctional in that way, and we have to deal with it. It's hard reading some of these comments here because I live in a country that totally supports these LGBT communities in Canada.

Life is short.. Find happiness is your own responsible... What others think is irrelevant. Live a happy life is what matter!

That is why we need strong leadership to guide everyone through this. Programs like these goes a long way to help, to understand what are the issues, complexities and concerns. Especially for those poor parents who could not come to term with their children's innate sexuality. The authority should step in to alleviate what seem to be their universal fears and concerns about the welfare and treatment of their beloved ones because of their sexuality. They have so many concerns and questions with no one to turn to for answers...e.g. will their children be able to settle down with a life long partner and start their own family, will they be treated equally, will they be discriminated, will they enjoy the same treatment and benefit that is given to heterosexuals... there are still much to do to make Singapore a fair, just and equal society, as stated in our national pledge.

I never really understood, how and why many people with religious views always seem to take the holy scriptures as an absolute rule to follow, 'The book says so, so it is absolute.' It feels like they do not have their own thoughts, and their faith is the only thing that makes them human.

CNA, should interview the older (age 60 and above) LBGT. Get them to talk about their life.....After so many years of being LBGT. Get them to share!

I’m a mother too, and honestly I hope my children will be heterosexual, but his life is his own to live; I can’t live it for him and I don’t try. But I can love him for as long as I live, no matter what choices he makes in his life. And that is what I will continue to do. I agree with the other mother. It is unfortunate and hard to watch other parents attempt to control all the choices of their children and then be hateful towards their children, in the name of love, when their child makes a choice they don’t like. Nothing will make me not love my child exclude him from family affairs. And as love as the people he chooses to love, also love and respect him, then it’s fine with me.

It's 2023 n yet still controversy and uncertainty. I went for complete SRS surgery in 1981 at age 19 and both my parents signed the consent letter as I was under 21. My sister's and parents were by my bedside when I awoke from the anaesthesia. My hormone therapy was when I was in sec 3 in 1976. For my family, I was their daughter/sister. For my nieces n nephews, I'm their aunt as they were born after my surgery. I'm aged 62 now, my beloved Mom n Dad has passed, miss them every second❤️. My family never for one second had any side thoughts...and I am aged 62. It's 2023 today, discrimination has lessened... Most importantly talk to your child and get to know the real them. LGBT is not a virus, we are born this way... Both my parents were staunch Catholics. It's understanding n live for all their children to see us all happy. Which I am today🙏🙏🙏... Thank you Mom🙏, Dad🙏 and my beautiful family🙏🌹🌹❤️❤️

Hi CNA Insider, great video. But have you consider giving credit to Jubilee team? Because the format of polling looks exactly the same as Jubilee's video.

This greatly simplifies the issues. They only really talked about being gay or lesbian, completely leaving out any other identities. For example, at least in Malaysia, there is shariah law against "crossdressing" which really restricts the possibilities for trans women. Another example is for asexuality. Of course not all asexuals won't have sex (of any kind), but despite the idea of (straight) celibacy, there is still the expectation of marriage and gender conformity and so on. (I speak on the latter half of that as someone who grew up going to the church). I think a lot of it is a passing down of ideas that are outdated as well as the institutions as a whole. Religions should be able to evolve over time, but I think with Christianity especially there's so many different denominations (Pentecostal, Jehovah's Witness, LDS, Episcopal, Anglican, Baptist etc) with different interpretations and then when you get down to the individual church, that can also change. I think there's an idea that younger people are more accepting because IN GENERAL we are, however like with anything there's a small minority that sort of dig in their heels. And vice versa for older folks. Also, being gay is natural. There's gay penguins, gay sheep, hermaphroditic creatures and a species of lizard that reproduces through parthogenesis (i.e. they're all female). And of course, seahorses - male pregnancy I think with the parents, they are afraid of what society will think, especially family members, but it's important to recognise that they themselves were likely indoctrinated by society that it's wrong. Also, to address another thing, I find it very damaging that they platformed someone who believes in conversion therapy/"counselling" to change it. Say that the tables were turned, and society was majority LGBTQ+ (who can reproduce) and minority straight, would it still be okay to have (straight-->gay) conversion therapy? ~ A Queer Ace Enby ~

Parents rejecting their children's romantic relationship is really nothing new. It is a common experience which many people share. Religious circles rejecting relationships outside of their faith isn't anything new or uncommon either. It is not just LGBT people having difficulties in such scenarios. Sexuality is one of the many many reasons for conflict in the family.

This is for Cheryl - Love Is always enough. As humans, we are not perfect, we are all flawed and because of that we do always love completely, truly or unconditionally. And because of this, it seems that love is not enough. But if you love unconditionally, and you let it be so, “love” is always enough.

Take a look of Thailand. When homosexuality is no longer an issue and nobody even bothers to do a documentary on this topic, then we are truly living in a land of equality and happiness.

Can't imagine a parent being disgusted by their child's sexuality because of how much shame it would bring them in front of their relatives and friends. Why do the thoughts of words of others matter? Do you really want to be surrounded by people who hurl hatred in your direction for something out of your hands? When an LGBT child has the courage to open up to them and seek, not demand, acceptance - they push them away with bigotry. Utterly abhorrent people. These parents are not capable of loving, though they are proficient in exercising self-love.

Being invisible and not recognized by the state can be dangerous as what the Khalistan movement teaches the world when the Sikhs are not recognised under the Indian Constitution. Thus, it is good that lgbtq people are slowly gaining recognition. Also, the notion of kinship and family goes beyond blood ties and immediate family according to a lot of academic scholarship these days. I am saying, not just lgbtq kinship, but also other ways of what constitutes a family goes a long way back to soldiers fighting in world wars, Dance crews and others. Throughout history, kinship and family has take many different forms, so it is reasonable to accept lgbtq kinship as well as all the other types of kinship Lastly, it is good that the law is being repealed as a lot of these laws have colonial roots

They do not want to rock the boat, and do not push their families, hence the families have no reason to change and adapt. I believe that I am supposed to work in the helping LGBT who seek to have a relationship with God, but I do not have the courage that the men of faith featured in this documentary have. But I would like to. I would very much like to reach out to these men and talk to them about how they got into this ministry. If anyone can help me do this. I would appreciate your help.

Ultimately love your children, it is that simple! Love the totality of who they are. What is interesting is that people, parent, clergy know that an environment of danger has been created by these beliefs that do harm to their children and ultimately the entire society and they don't make major strides to change the mentality. Parents should adopt the attitude that every child is my child and not just about only protecting their own because ultimately all suffer. Religious leaders like to say hate the sin and not the sinner which for me is utter nonsense. Your spirituality is supposed to uplift, inspire and allow for people transform their lives if this isn't happening that what is the purpose of these institutions. These are the same institutions where horrible sexual discretions have happened for centuries so I don't think they are good judges on morality. If you say that your child or whoever in your family is a good and upstanding person then that's that. This is who they are. Who they choose to love is irrelevant. Also Gay people can have biological children the idea that they can't is ridiculous. I know plenty of gay and lesbian women who have had their c=own children.

Is it me or who ... i am really interested to know more about the story of Karen Lee (used to be lesbian) @31:44 ... But the whole show just let her speak a few sentence and end the interview.... What I feel about the documentary is that the host keep running around talking or interviewing here and there little bit and we as audience have to pick up all the bits and pieces to find our direction on the views of the topic.... And at the end i feel lost...

The social experiment was biased and unfair. The first question on Singapore should be accepting of people of all ages, races, and religions was a more generally acceptable question, and everyone agreed to it. For the second question, which was Singapore being accepting of people of different sexualities, the participants did not start from the baseline position of neutral. They were asked to stay if they agreed and move if they disagreed. So many variable factors came into play here just because they were not told to start from the baseline. 1. It is easier and more convenient to stay put than to move. Participants could have stayed because they did not have strong views yet on this issue and it is easier to stay. 2. Participants could have been influenced by "peer" pressure as well. Since the majority stayed, and each of them could see who agreed and who disagreed, it was much easier to stay comfortable and agree with the majority. 3. By starting with a question that everyone agreed with, it is actually priming the participants to also agree with the next question immediately after. They did not do the reverse and start with the sexuality question and then the age, race and religion question, so there was no control or comparison. The sample size of the social experiment was also much too small. 15 people is paltry. There also was not a clear definition of the words "okay", "accepting/acceptance", "support". "I am ok with an LGBT individual as my child's teacher". There are so many problems with this statement. What age is your child at? Preschool, lower Primary, upper primary, lower secondary, upper secondary, JC, polytechnic, university? Does the LGBT teacher actively share his or her LGBT views with the students hence influencing them negatively or is that teacher silent on these perspectives? There are other ways for people with same sex attraction to be happy, and selling the idea that only couples are happy, is erroneous and misguided. Being in a relationship is overrated. For people who experience same sex attraction, they don't have to indulge and give in to their inclinations, because doing so is sin and wrong. They can still live very full, rich, meaningful and fulfilled lives as single individuals. This is the perspective that was not presented. It was touched briefly upon by Karen Lee who identifies as an ex-lesbian. 33:11. That would have been a very interesting perspective.

Its fine to cut ties with family who doesnt support who you are. They never really loved you, they loved an imaginary version of you.

I feel parents should accept their kids as they are Mom/dad may not like it, agree with it.... they shouldn't shun/disown or distance themselves from their child 😢

School libraries and the national libraries are "not allowed" to buy young adult/children books with LGBTQ characters.

I mean... given the next few generations to come, those who oppose this community will be seen as people who lived in the Stone Age. Seriously, there are so much more at stake here, why are we wasting effort into allowing a group of people to love. If it doesn’t affect you, why do you even care?? Imagine restricting a child’s potential to flourish just because of their sexual orientation! Common people! We should be channeling our resources to make this a better world, explore the universe, enhance our resources, invest in modern medicine and science. I bet you the people who support war and destructions are the very same people who oppose this group of LGBTQ+.

The message of most religions is one of love and acceptance. It is important to remember that LGBT people are just like everyone else, needs loved and acceptance. Religion should not be used to justify violence or hatred. There is no place for violence or hatred in any religion. It is important to remember that LGBT people are human beings. If you are religious, it is important to remember that your faith does not give you the right to discriminate against others. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of sexuality orientation or gender identity.

I guess the problem can be "RECONCILIATION" itself. Sometimes it's better to choose one, go with it. You cant have it all....and that's alright 😃Just choose one that fits your personally
