It was on the mum. You know your son is part of THE NIGHT LORDS they are practically living generators of fresh horrors. A random woman coming up to them UNPROMPTED would really get you shot. I'm surprised they didn't make her into a cape. Seriously, in their home world Night Lords are basically boogeymen they're what you tell children to get them to eat their vegetables and stop misbehaving. Except they are very much real and would probably go through in turning people into fresh horrors.

Reminds me of a night lord who was imprisoned. When he learnt one of the guards (or something like that) had brutally beat a young girl that the night lord had befriended. The man had beat the girl so badly, she was paralyzed. But she was a psyker, so she could still talk to the night lord. The night lord proceeded to break out of the prison and slaughter the man. Before he then accepted being arrested again.

It makes sense. The whole reason that the chapter wasn't obliterated in the first place because of their mutation is because of Magnus literally begged the emperor to spare their lives because he cared that much. People like to paint Magnus as some arrogant asshole that is full of hubris and completely ignore the fact that he had a stupidly huge heart underneath all that intellect and that was the major reason why he was able to be manipulated to fall in the first place. I mean, it's very very symbolic and obvious that the chaos demon Magnus is literally missing the good part of his soul that he can't have and that's why he's staying with each and the way he is now that the reason Madness is so unrepentantly bad currently is because the good part of him is literally gone, that's how much his compassion and Care was integral to his character.

I believe the military auxilia Of the ultra marines are the only planetary defense system force that are considered to be on par with the actual solar auxiliary of terra. So the ultra mar empire basically made a level of imperial guardsmen that can match the very defenders that are specifically meant to protect imperial terra. If Certain after reports are to be believed If it shows that they clearly have made a very effect of fighting force and apparently they have a far better efficiency rate for the resulting combat troops. Maybe terras start taking some lessons from ultramar.

@@lornbaker1083 - Guilliman has always understood the entire chain of logistics and support that his Ultramarines need to operate. He's never dismissed that as somebody else's problem. Rather than overextend his Astartes forces defending Ultramar while also fighting wars on other fronts, he has made sure that the "lesser" troops are still a formidable force. Also, families who contribute sons to the Ultramarines treat it as a great honor. In short, Guilliman understands the concept of morale at the societal level.

Thing is with their extended lifespans, Astartes may well be visiting their great great _x_ neices and nephews. Families might even have a form of "ancestor worship" about the Astartes from their line a few centuries ago. If your family history included a sibling of one of your ancestors being an Astartes _and they're still around,_ then that would be a big talking point in the family. What would the reaction be of the Astartes in question if another Astartes was produced from his 'lineage'? "Greetings, senior battle brother, I am a descendant from your birth family's older brother Caspiel. Your example has inspired me to succeed in joining the Chapter."

Actually veteran Salamanders train candidates for their trials. So good chance that he taught him how to become a Salamander. Another way salamanders are better. Rather than just throwing untrained kids into dangerous situations like other chapters they actually give them a bit of training before hand.

What I remember some old codex talked about that families often recod how many of their line has managed to become marines and that was often big bragin right. And Ultramarines had about every planet in their mini empire thats top canditates have chanse be trialed to be marine. So high competition and pre trained

The Space Wolves are VERY proud when they meet a descendent of their blood make it to become a battle brother. A feast will be held just for that occasion for the unit. Yes, the Wolves assign you to your ancestor's unit as well. So your great x whatever uncle is in charge of training you. If your uncle is a wolf priest, you WILL be taught to become one as well too unless you showed an especially high talent with something else.

It is equally an honor and a curse. An honor to know that your bloodline has been chosen to be part of the grand echelon that shall defend the stars. A curse to know that unless you have another son Or a daughter your bloodline ends. But that is the cruel price that must be paid for safety in the universe that literally only exists to seek out the extinction of human life

It's funny because you can be a parent on Nocturne, have a child in your 20s. By your 30s he get recruited to become a space marine. And then after a decade of gene forging and basic training, your son shows up as a dude twice your size, and you're still in your 40s or 50s. It would be fun for parents to be like: Do your homework Sha'Zel! Your uncle is a space marine, and you're failing calculus.

Something interesting about the salamanders is due to the marines long lives they can be around for generations. If you were a nocturnian and you had one as a relative they would probably be that one cool uncle/grandpa who always comes with the best gifts

Ultramarines can still maintain ties to their mortal families, there’s some instances of it. They’re also taught to maintain relations with humans of a diplomatic nature. So not as much as the Salamanders but they’re definitely a close second.

Salamanders are my favorite because of this. Ik in this setting its all about grim dark but i love that the sallys try to keep there humanity. I also think khan should be like this as he is so underrated and he uses commen sense. Id imagine he would want his own warriors to be empathetic towerd human life. Imagine if khan did this same thing in secret as to not show his true colors yo anyone. That would be so good

I remember the chapter master of the blood ravens (he was still just a member from a company) went to visit his dad and ended pretty much like how it would end for me and mine, astartes or not lol

I just got reminded of that story where a old chapter serf thinks about how he joined the service of the chapter. His mother died and he promised he’d always look after his little brother, even after the little brother became an astartes.

I can imagine Astartes doing recreational activities during campaigns and Training, discussing philosophy and History as well as meditating over certain ecclesiarchic texts. As of interactions with normal humans, there are oft personal chapter servant's for that. Maybe an entire Family dedicated to serve an Astartes over the decades and centuries.

A funny thing I read in a Space Wolves novel implied the idea that they probably could go visit their family if they wanted to (Space Wolves get free time to go hunt on their own and shoot the breeze anyways), but because Fenris is so deadly by the time an aspirant actually becomes a full marine there is a very significant chance their whole family is dead by now, having lived to the ripe old age of 20.

Some Blood Angels paint in free time, Space Wolves drink a lot, sometimes with non Marines when on other worlds, and when on Fenris and between duties they can travel on leave, sometimes fight creatures on their world in whims.

@@serbronnoftheblackwater798 I’d consider that a happy ending. She got to see her son one last time before she died. Better then the alternative of becoming a dark elders modern art masterpiece. I’ll take a bolter round to the face any day over having my skin, nerves, internal organs, bones and brain surgically removed and kept alive, all the while still being able to feel everything.

@@P.W.N.ed_9000 lol are you kidding me I would love to remove a couple of their weapons off them. I will admit the bugs would give me a couple seconds pause if I had to go fight them, but still I wouldn't be able to say no. To get and use things like a chain sword wow. The excitement and adrenaline rush would be something I couldn't resist. I make no claims about my sanity or lack there of its just wow the 40k universe so much to do.

I'm reading the Night Lords books again and had completely forgotten about this. Forget who it was, but that whole scene was kind of blunted by the guy not being completely sure it WAS his mother.
