If you want techy gadgets that balloon the price, buy a Lexus. If you want high gas mileage, buy a Prius. If you want a truck that looks bad@$$, will go most anywhere, any season, will last forever, and not strand you in the middle of nowhere, buy a 4Runner. Everything about the 4Runner is geared towards reliability and durability.

I was thinking thankfully it doesn't have push button start. FYI, push button start is one more expensive thing to fail, keys have worked nicely since the beginning. Tissues are for blowing your nose, someday somewhere you're gonna need to blow.

I owned a 93’ 4Runner before getting my 95’ and 98’ Landcruisers .And I loved the 4Runner , it was bulletproof..some owners hated The seating position on those early 4Runners , it was like sitting on the ground, but I loved them.Just turn the key and you knew it was always gonna start and get you wherever you wanted to go.

I just bought a 2020 4Runner TRD Pro 2 days ago!.. FYI about the lights, they 4Runner is about simplistic so Toyota made sure ifa light goes out it is as easy as a new bulb, rather than needing to replace an entire light fixture thing like more modern lights.. Toyota knows we are going to beat them up off road so knows the easier to fix the better.. If you need more light for off roading, light bars are amazing.. You only need a small one if basic off roading.. I put in good bulbs and am adding aftermarket which makes all the difference.. Excellent review on my favorite SUV :)

I'm getting 21 ~ 22 mpgs in rural and town driving. Not earth shattering, but way better than my Raptor did. I have an expanding family so the SUV made more sense for my application. I also wanted to be able to go to the mountains and be able to function in blizzard conditions. The 4Runner fit the bill for me.

Russell Lee comparing a full size pickup to the midsize SUV doesn't make sense. The raptor is way more powerful than this.

@@Michael-ur5qb And twice the price. Besides, it's his experience. A 4Runner apparently fits his situation better. Power is not the only measure of a vehicle. The 4Runner is arguably a better off roader than a Raptor in every situation except high speed, and certainly more practical for anyone that doesn't specifically need an open bed.

Awesome review, Forrest! The 4Runner TRD sure is a good looking vehicle despite its age. Nevertheless, it is definitely showing its age in some areas more than others. Most noticeably with the headlights, lack of push button start, and the somewhat dated touchscreen infotainment system. All in all, though, the 4Runner still seems like a very solid choice for people looking for a mainstream offroad SUV that can conquer the roads less traveled with ease. From one car enthusiast to another, keep it up! 👍🏽

Great video, man! I’m considering a new forerunner for my next vehicle purchase. I love the body on frame construction, ground clearance, and overall durability. I plan to keep it forever and I know it will make it there. Being completely built in Japan is a huge plus for quality control. My friend who is a mechanic says he sees no problems with them at all. He had one come in recently with 290,000 miles on it, and it was only for the heat shield on the catalytic converter came loose. LOL

It should be mentioned that he does NOT have a TRD Off Road, but a TRD Off Road PREMIUM. I wish they would distinguish the differences. I have the TRD Off Road. Not the Premium. There are differences. And anyone that drives a Premium thinks theirs is not a little more upscale because of the leather is wrong. Or simulated leather. I would have paid a little extra for the PREMIUM except that the cloth seats are more comfortable. Great SUV either way. Great off roader. Cannot get anything better in this category. Reliable and capable.

I actually think the old school key is more reliable and will still work if the gets wet. You’re stuck if you accidentally get your key fob saturated with water. Smart for Toyota to still implement a key considering the type of person who might buy this vehicle and where they go.

They actually do not have leather. The reason is that they have come up with a material that feels a lot like it but will last longer. Leather is bad about drying and cracking. This new material is not and will last much longer than real leather. The 4Runner has a regular key start and a stick to engage the 4wheel drive. These are two things I LOVE about the 4Runner and I hope they keep that in the 2020 redesign. I know it will be getting a new 3.5L motor. The new motor will bump the power from 278 hp to 310 hp. It will also be getting a new 6 speed transmission. It will get 19 mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway. It will also be getting all LED lights. It will get a new HD touch screen that is supposed to have amazing sharpness and clarity. I love the old school touches to it. It's the last true body on frame, it still has key start and it still has the stick for the four wheel drive. I hope these things remain in the 4Runner. I have a 2018 4Runner Off Road Premium. I LOVE it! I love how well it rides, how well it does off road, I love the way everything is laid out with all of the controls. It is very easy to see why there are so many 4Runner lovers out there. It is very clear why it is such a MASSIVELY POPULAR vehicle. The tray in the back that slides out is great. I use that for my groceries. I pull it all the way out then put my groceries on it and then slide it back. When I get home I slide that tray out then get my groceries and I love it because I don't have to reach way back to get them out.

Ya, I agree with you. I am not against technology as long as it is GOOD technology. I don't believe push button start is good technology. The fob that those come with...…..if you lose it costs just over $600.00 to replace it. Then we have to program it to your car. If the push button part of it breaks in any way it is a minimum of $1,00.00 to fix! There was one recently that was $1,400.00 to fix. All of that to push a button instead of turn a key? Not for me! I will stick with key start. People don't realize it but the Sunroof option is the same thing. Get into the warranty part of that and you will be furious. They push them because they have a huge profit margin. You pay over $1,000 for an option that cost them $100.00! If you have problems with it we will hand you a bill for no less than $1,700.00! And you will have a problem with them. If you go through an automated car wash water will, get in through the sunroof. On the highway they get loud. They will create a whistling noise a lot, they squeak and pop a lot. They are made of glass and rubber and they will have problems. God forbid you get some hail in a storm and bust up the glass. The rubber in them dry out and leak. It's a matter of math and science. The drain line for them is something I have complained about to them for 4 years now. It is so small and will clog so easily it is crazy. If you bring your car to us and we have to replace the glass....just the glass. We will charge you almost $600.00 for the glass alone! Then you have to pay for the labor! It's why we hate it when people buy them because we know we are going to have another run in with a customer furious about repair costs and we agree with them! We don't set prices. We had a 4runner where the sunroof leaked but the water ran back to the back seat so the woman did not realize it until it made a mess of her headliner. It cost her around $1,900.00 to have it fixed and that did not count her ruined headliner that is now stained and hanging down in one place. She could not afford to have the headliner replaced as well because we have to replace the entire thing!!! It isn't cheap! Having said that . To me, my 4runner is an Off Road Premium with key start, stick for the 4x4 and no sun roof. I LOVE it!! Would not trade it for anything. I also have a Tacoma 4x4 with no sunroof or key start and I love it as well!! I am looking forward to the 2020 4runner which will get a new motor and will go from 278 hp to 310 hp and will have an 8 speed transmission if I remember right.

wow, i think we just have the exact same thoughts about the options. many of them are trivial and cost more to purchase and maintain, push-start button is one of them, just like what you said. scooter has the feature decades ago, I never understand why people call it innovation(of course the one on a car may be fancier). the build-in GPS is another example, the software update even costs more than buying a new dedicated GPS unit every year. when it breaks sometime later, it's outdated already. you don't know if you want to spend money to get it fixed and just see the broken unit everyday on the car. but people seem to be excited for them when buying new cars. new tech should be something fundamentally different or improvement, not just some electric components and wires. hybrid is new tech, electric car is new tech, push-start button is NOT, ambient light is NOT. actually, I somehow dislike those driving assistance type of new techs. drivers should always pay attention to the road. but not sure if it's because those new tech features, it's not uncommon to see people looking at phone, doing make-up while driving. sometimes, i feel the auto-transmission should not even have been invented, lol. it sounds like you work at dealership. if that's the case, it's interesting to see someone like you don't like people to buy options, XD. i know the options are one of the main profit sources.

The SDSS Shock System is the EXACT suspension on a $100,000+ Land Cruiser! Way way way better Suspension than the TRD Pro! Toyota outdid themselves and overkilled the suspension for sure with this one and at a lower price than the TRD Pro. The only thing the Pro has is off-road selectable ride/crawl controls... if you are a true off-roader, simplicity is way better than an overpriced TRD Pro... I’m telling y’all as a Toyota Master Certified Technician, the Off-Road is a way better off road vehicle and better value!

Bro like, they only added multi terrain select included with crawl control because Toyota's 4x4 vehicles are weak when it comes to off-road, a Dodge ram could easily go through the toughest terrain without those features.

There are so many ‘real’ highways; is off roading really necessary? We’re asking. In other words are there enough miles of dirt /off road locations to justify the 4 wheel drive expense??

James Collins depends on where you live and what you do. I’m in the mountains all 4 seasons with the family. Going up HWY 9 getting out of Breckenridge puckers my butt in the snow, even with 4x4. Lol

4Runner has aged considerably and is a gas guzzler. Yes its fully capable off road SUV but Toyota has stopped innovating with this SUV and every year since 2014, its same vehicle with different paint trims and bisltein shocks

I own an '18 TRD Pro, which is more capable than the Offroad, and I would say that the Jeep JL Rubicon is a more capable SUV with solid front suspension, front and rear difflocks, and detachable sway bar, stock. I'd have bought a Jeep instead if not for the Toyota quality and resale advantage.

Red Rider7 Apologies. I read this on my phone and didn't see the extended butt-hurt section of your reply. If you're building a rig, it makes sense to go the route that gets you where you want to go for the lowest price, but that is not the argument I was making-simply what is most capable stock for offroad. So go on defending your choices and win whatever prize the internet gives you for self righteousness. In the meantime, I'll be content that what I said factually is objectively true.

The Pro isn't necessarily "more capable" and actually less than an Off-Road with KDSS. If equipped with KDSS, the swaybars free float if you're going under 12 mph allowing some 2" more of travel front and rear by not being hindered by the sway bar. If you start getting sporty above 12 mph crawling then the Pro is going to likely feel better over the rough stuff but after hitting the asphalt, the KDSS system wins again!

You will be happy with your purchase. Jeeps get old and the 4Runner is great! I had a 2011 trail before I went with the Tacoma trd 2016 and plan to get the 2020 4Runner in hopes it will come with a new engine.

Yes its capable no doubt. But Toyota should update at least to its Toyota Safety Sense program . Upgrade the engine, as it has poor fuel consumption rating. Put adaptive cruise control. Its looks has not departed from the 2010 version....cmon this vehicle needs some refresh in all aspects.

The lack of adaptive cruise control and all the safety sense nonsense is why I bought a 4Runner. I've driven cars with those features and I hated it.

I love the 4runner but good God it's out of date. They're lucky the competition is really only the Wrangler. With the Bronco incoming we will see if Toyota starts taking it more seriously.
