After 8 years of hand balancing, I've created this drill to help teach my students how to save a handstand from a backwards fall (towards the heels of the hands). While it is very demanding physically, you don't need to be able to do the biggest fastest possible version right at the start. Just learning the most basic version will be very helpful. In fact, if you truly master the handstand, the small elbow rebalance will be almost all you need to hold the handstand freestanding.
That said, beginners will make a lot of mistakes on their handstand entry, and being able to pull a big elbow rebalance out of your back pocket when you need to is like having your emergency fire exit clear for escape. When you first start, your entry, and your handstand itself will be wild and chaotic- falling forwards and backwards out of control, and having that big elbow rebalance will prevent you from falling back on your feet, to the extent of your proficiency in it. Perfect this technique, and let me know in the comments how much it helps you :)..
