Can't Balance in a Handstand? I Created This Drill for My Students. (The Elbow Rebalance)

After 8 years of hand balancing, I've created this drill to help teach my students how to save a handstand from a backwards fall (towards the heels of the hands). While it is very demanding physically, you don't need to be able to do the biggest fastest possible version right at the start. Just learning the most basic version will be very helpful. In fact, if you truly master the handstand, the small elbow rebalance will be almost all you need to hold the handstand freestanding.
That said, beginners will make a lot of mistakes on their handstand entry, and being able to pull a big elbow rebalance out of your back pocket when you need to is like having your emergency fire exit clear for escape. When you first start, your entry, and your handstand itself will be wild and chaotic- falling forwards and backwards out of control, and having that big elbow rebalance will prevent you from falling back on your feet, to the extent of your proficiency in it. Perfect this technique, and let me know in the comments how much it helps you :)..

The elbow rebalance drill is so hard. I can’t quite do it against the wall yet but even doing the drill with feet on the ground (and working on planche push-up progressions) has helped to improve my handstands by quite a bit. It was also helpful seeing how far you have to move your shoulder past the red line in order to successfully rebalance. This is a wonderful exercise and one that every person in pursuit of a better handstand should do on a regular basis.

Can you comment on how this translates to doing actual handstands? Do you go in and try the normal straight leg method, then shift to bent knees when you need to rebalance?

This do work well for the rebalance part. But that far away from the wall is too power demanding for a beginner due to the planche and flexion strength required

Obviously this is not a drill for absolute neophytes that don't have enough strength to comfortably themselves in a handstand, but the beginner level of this drill takes surprisingly little strength when performed as I did- and this drill is very suitable for those people that essentially have business being in a handstand, ability to bail if needed, and need to learn how to rebalance the handstand. The most advanced version I showed is of course, quite advanced though ;).

I am trying this, but this approach is quite difficult. Still continuing. I hope to see change soon

Why that far away from the wall its too hard for beginners due to lack of strength

Beginners should at least be able to do 10 clean hspu against a wall before attempting to free balance.

@@RJ-is9ko That's of course nice, but not a prerequisite at all. You would have barely any girls being able to handstand if that was the case. Being able to hold yourself upside down against the wall for 30-60s is really all the strength you need to be able start progressing into free balance in my opinion.
