Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.
In this video Mahamed shows a series of slick submission options when you're having trouble finishing the Armbar from top position.
These submission options not only give you the ability to finish the roll or match. But they also allow you to have greater control and make your opponent super uncomfortable.
The slicer he put me in was awful! And the collar choke he used was no nicer! both of the submissions were brutal!
I like this video because it's several simple BJJ techniques from a common position.
I think everyone who has done Brazilian Jiujitsu at some point has struggled to finish an Armbar.
And make sure to stick around for the end as Mahamed and I share a few thoughts about training and developing a deeper more complex Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Whenever my TKD/HKD master is using me to demonstrate a technique, he will show about 4 different submission options from the position, each one more painful than the last. After about the 4th or 5th one, while he's still got me in the hold, he'll go "oh, sorry", as if he didn't realize how much pain he was causing me. After he finally lets me up, my Dad (a fellow student of mine) will say "I didn't quite catch that, can you show me again?"

I'm convinced that with any submission art, the majority of the skill and difficulty increase at higher belts is the number of submission options available. You have more skill against lower belts, because you can catch them in submissions they never thought of. And you have more difficulty in your bracket, because you have to pay attention to that many more ways you can get caught.

@Jaywalk Yup exactly, it is that natrual flow and instinct they have for the next move, it is like the professor says. IF you control the situation you know what he will do because of what you allowed him...

@@danielskrivan6921 Just be careful with trying to absorb hundreds of techniques. You can end up a jack of all trades and master of none. I would suggest perfecting 3-4 techniques that can be done from multiple setups. Then slowly add to your list of techniques. These days people want a new technique every week. Which can mean none of the techniques will work when needed. So repetition, repetition and repetition. Pressure test and repeat. Eat, sleep, train, repeat.
@danielskrivan6921

@@VestigialHead That's why I said it's something at the higher belts, when you've had more time to digest those other techniques.

Ive been training since i was 32 years old im now 47 going on 48 and a blackbelt. Im at stage where the younger guys are beating me now. Just watching muhammed makes me say damn, what a different level the pros are on. Just a totally different level. Anyone over 40 years old in any combat sport is OLD> These little things allow me to end it quicker without using more energy I dont have. I have a hard time getting out of bed I dont want to use what little energy I have left if I don't need to. Great little add ons.

8:55 in Hapkido, almost every move I know can be easily countered by applying strength in the opposite direction of the technique. But applying that strength makes it very easy for me to do an opposite move. If I try to go inside and apply a V-lock, and you apply outward strength, I can switch outside and very easily apply an armbar throw. Same thing the other way.
