I spent 15 minutes playing guard in an MMA fight. I did not win.

Nothing wrong with full guard. But there can be something wrong with staying with something you are already good at, failing to evolve, not risking leaving your comfort zone or neglecting other positions. He should listen to his coaches, its rare that they actively steer you wrong.

I've been going a year once a week so I've learnt very little. I may watch this video a few times so I can have these for the next open mat. Thanks. The heel lock is quite natural my kids do this when goofing around at home and they don't do bjj. I'm not super thinking about any belt. I just want to get a bit better. Thanks for informative video.

got a question for you If I was to take bjj and make it to purple belt would I be prepared for most situatuions that could occur while outside my home ? thoughts please thank you!

I wonder if he is misunderstanding what his coaches are wanting him to do. His coaches might be wanting him to venture away from full guard to try and build a foundation around a different guard and the he’s getting too comfortable doing the same thing. I’m thinking that it could be the fact that they want him to start getting his feet wet around the board with different positions as a white belt who is still learning.

Fairness is not treating every individual the same way. Fairness is treating everyone according to the same *principles,* and the principles here are simple: The bigger the size/strength/skill/age/health(etc.) disparity between you and your partner, the more you ease up accordingly. The less your partner *wants* to roll hard, the more you ease up accordingly. In short: Match energy.

I wouldn’t say bjj is the best , but it’s ignorant to say it’s useless. It’s at least good as a last resort for if you ever end up on your back. You don’t want to be completely helpless if someone takes you down. Obviously the best thing to train would be MMA, but at the end of the day, it’s better to be trained in one aspect of fighting than zero aspects .

Excellent perspective. It seems that the people that bash closed guard typically struggle against people with good closed guard games. People that bash wrestling/standup typically struggle with that part of the game. People that complain about leg locks aren't usually proficient at leg locks. Different things work for different sizes, ages, builds, etc. Don't ignore other aspects of the game, but keep using what works for you.

Hi coach, what goes through your mind when you're rolling/in a match? What do you look for? That can improve your game/ increase your chances in submitting your opponent?

Sounds like a bad coach. The only thing I could imagine is if the coach wants him to explore other positions which adhere to a curriculum in order to advance. But we all no there is no curriculum on jiu-jitsu.

I was in the same boat with other schools until I finally got to my current school. At my current school, white belts don’t roll, period. You’re in fundamentals drilling your brains out for almost two years. Fundamentals consists of techniques boiled down to bare bones where you are encouraged to get to know technique but memorize concepts. Rolling is in intermediate, and you had to EARN the invitation to go there by getting your third stripe white. Even once you got to intermediate, you still don’t roll. You do positional sparring. You roll once you get to blue belt. That was a godsend for me because two years in, I’m finally semi-comfortable with rolling. I’m still getting tapped out left and right, but at least I can move now. That just opened jiu jitsu up for me and made it so much fun.

I used full guard a lot as a white belt, still do, but I found that a lot of the time I kept my legs locked too long, often times sabotaging the technique I was working and that seems to be a common pattern. I don't know exactly what the coach said and maybe it was as Chewy said where the coach just doesn't respect that position... but just in case don't forget to be mobile when using any guard including the full guard. Your hips need to move, you have to be able to pivot, so make sure you are loose and can flow in the guard. To add to what Chewy was saying my coach told me in order to get my purple belt he wanted to see me specialize in something. I didn't argue but I had gone through phases where I used a lot of guard, I was hitting omoplatas from everywhere and had great flow going from omoplatas to triangles and other shoulder locks and created a pretty good game... then people shut me down and before my injury I was getting to side mount a lot and had a great sequence from there I was working. From the other side people got to the point where they said, stop doing ____ every time we roll and I'd reply, don't let me do _____. It works till your training partners learn to shut it down and you'll have to adapt your game or move on to something else. What you trained and got good at doesn't go away and one day you'll be competing and that guard game you developed will pop up and you'll be killer with it. You're a year in and you're a white belt, soak up what you can and challenge yourself with other positions but if you're liking the guard for now, explore the shit out of that. If your coaches really don't want you to play guard then they should pass your guard when they roll with you and make you see what else you're neglecting. They should teach you something else to obsess over and if it interests you then go for it. Point is, no one else can tell you what is working for you but if it's not then it's your coaches job to steer you into something that does. That being said, there is a lot of fancy shit out there that can be shut down by fundamentals so focusing on a fundamental isn't such a bad thing, especially one year in.

I do think there is a good argument to be made for white belt. I started BJJ in 2023, I first started fantasising about taking up a martial art in 2008. Took me 15 years to actually take that leap, a delay I sorely regret but also, a significantly better outcome than the thousands of people who never take that first step. So it's certainly easy to obtain physically, but getting yourself to make a decision is still a significant hurdle and not to be scoffed at
