And it isn’t even really his son! His wife cheated on him with his brother and got pregnant, so little Charles is actually his nephew. And he knows this. Knows all about the betrayal but keeps it to himself and raises and loves little Charles as if he were his own. A truly selfless person, living his whole life for the people he loves, no matter what mistakes they make or promises they break. A real man, husband and father in the classical sense. Something that seems to get more and more rare as time goes on...

In the original play, I think it was Mattie Faye that hints how Charles (the dad) "shoots blanks". She was always envious of Violet and Beverly and how they could conceive. So Mattie Faye seduced Bev for her own selfish reasons, cheating on Charles, conceiving little Charles, and betraying Violet.

As a kid, I didn't understand Mae's hatred for Charles either. But now when I think about it, I think it has to do with the fact that he's a reminder of her mistake, a reminder of how she betrayed her sister and her husband, and she has to live with that for the rest of her life. Not saying it excuses her behavior, but it does explain it.

He's not in the play, the actor that plays Little Charles is Ian Bradford. But the play is what the movie is based off of. There's a housemaid and a Sherrif who play HUGE roles in the story (which were cut in the movie) and Bev (The Patriarch of the house) is played by Tracy Letts' dad (Tracy is the author of both the play and the screen adaption). It's so much better than the movie! It won many TONY awards that year. It's so good! But, on the other hand, if you're a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, watch the film. The actors are great, and it would be an amazing movie to me, if I wasn't so attached/ used to the play!
