He was peaking in the tent, but had been dancing in Black Church since he was two. That is what his parents told him. He grew up in Tupelo Mississippi ghetto. The pastor encouraged Elvis. Yes. His start was in black churches. He LOVED gospel more than any music. Period. You’ve heard the backup singers say yeah… When we would get together and just sing with us and Elvis alone, we would sing gospel songs and he just loved it. In fact one of those back up singers never like Colonel Parker because she thought he ended up forcing too many things on Elvis. She said that in a interview.

Yes, Elvis the entertainer was/is unmatched, but he was a better person. People would send him teddy bears by the thousands, he would donate them to local hospitals for the children there. Here are a few more... On March 24, 1961 Elvis performed in Hawaii for a benefit concert, held at the Bloch Arena, to raise money for a memorial for the USS Arizona which had sank during the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 historically known as “a day that will live in infamy”. Elvis raised $ 65,000.00 and a plaque was prominently placed, at the memorial site, acknowledging Elvis’ efforts in raising the money. Sadly, the plaque was removed due to the acts of a few powerful “non-Elvis fans” and the return of this plaque remains an emphasis of mine and should be to Elvis Presley Fans Worldwide. In 1963 Elvis Donated a 1955 red Ford Thunderbird to the March of Dimes and was then sold in auction in late 1963... in 1964 Elvis bought the FDR Presidential Yacht named the Potomac and donated it to the St. Judes Children s Research Hospital, who ultimately sold it for an amount of $55,000.00, spearheaded at the time by entertainer Danny Thomas (Father of Marlo Thomas aka: “That Girl” TV Star and wife of Phil Donahue the talk show host). One bit of humor involving this event was that Colonel Parker, upon inspecting the yacht the morning that Elvis would personally present the yacht to Danny Thomas with many members of the press being present, saw that the yacht was in dire need of maintenance including paint. As only the Colonel would he authorized ONLY the side of the yacht that would be photographed to be freshly painted leaving the rest of the yacht discolored with peeling paint evident. In 1968 Elvis allowed one of his Rolls Royce to be auctioned off for a charity that assisted mentally retarded children. In 1973 Elvis performed the first “live concert/broadcast via Worldwide satellite”, which was seen by a record audience of over ONE BILLION people, known as “Aloha from Hawaii”. This concert was actually a benefit concert for the Kuiokalani Lee Cancer Fund. The goal was to raise $ 25,000.00 but this amount was greatly exceeded and actually raised $ 75,000.00. In 1975 Elvis gave a concert in Jackson Mississippi that raised in excess of $ 100,000.00 for victims of a tornado. This concert was deeply personal to Elvis because when Elvis was a child a tornado tore through his hometown in Tupelo, Mississippi and killed many people. Also, in 1975 during the month of July Elvis bought and then gave away 13 Cadillac s including to (bank teller) Mennie Person who was admiring Elvis’ limo that was parked outside of the dealership. Elvis also gave her a check to buy new clothes and in return Elvis received a hug and a kiss and a memory that was…priceless. There are many more instances and the things is, Elvis never wrote any of these off on his taxes because he felt it wasn't a true gift if he got anything in return.

I saw the movie on June 24th. Austin is phenomenal as Elvis. Deserves award.

I remember watching the 1979 made-for-TV movie, "Elvis", which starred Kurt Russell in his first adult acting roe (he had been a child and teen actor prior to then) on ABC. Russell did a very good performance in the TV movie, which was a low-budget production. Austin Butler reminds me of a young Kurt Russell, which is a very good choice to play Elvis Presley in this 2022 film. The history and interaction between Presley and Col. Tom Parker (portrayed by Tom Hanks in prosthetic makeup) will be a very compelling reason to watch the film in movie theaters. The story of Presley's years growing up in Mississippi and in Memphis, Tennessee, and his musical training by Reverend W. Herbert Brewster, will be another reason to watch this film.

Great reaction! Elvis deserves this epic biopic and I believe it will be. Obviously there will be some inconsistencies in the movie as related to E's life but what isn't inconsistent is his relationship to the black community in Tupelo, MS growing up. Much of what I saw was accurate to the times. He was born there and lived in what would be considered the ghetto. His early cultural musical influences where solidly out of the black church and the black culture. He wasn't an infrequent visitor to churches, he attended those churches, sang in their choirs and danced in church to their music. He was every bit influenced by the black community as was a black child. Regarding his musical influence, it was not something he could deny or simply throw away or eliminate from his musical persona. It was a natural .. organic part of him. His friends were the black children in his neighborhood but schools were segregated so he attended them. I am a native Memphian and grew up in E's time. I'm going to link you an interview done by Baz Luhrmann who went to Tupelo to research this film. He interviewed an older black gentleman named Sam Bell who was a good friend of E's as a child. He will tell you the truth about E. I believe this interview is an important piece of information to add to E's, sometimes misunderstood history. One thing Sam said that seems a bit prophetic was that when E moved to Memphis, his Tupelo friends worried that Elvis would be hurt and misunderstood,, which I believe speaks to his total uniqueness as compared to others. Elvis, the man, was far more than a singing voice and a pretty face, he was an enigma,,, he was a humble and polite southern boy, and he was generous to both friends and strangers. He stood on a stage with only his voice, a few back up singers, some musical instruments and drew people from all over the world to his concerts. I’ve seen many comments covering some cultural aspects of Elvis, so I will add a few more personal info. Elvis was an identical twin but his brother died in birth. His parents were poor and illiterate so he had little opportunity. Elvis was a social outcast in school and the brunt of bullying because he was different from his peers. His mother died right before he entered the military and many around him have said he died with her but it took two decades to actually happen. The movie is based on a book written by his manager Colonel Tom Parker who took 50% of Elvis’ earnings while totally controlling him and his career, steering Elvis away from projects he’d have found creatively satisfying like West Side Story and A Star Is Born plus steering away people who could have challenged his power over Elvis, the biggest being Ann Margret whom he loved deeply which is why Tom Parker is considered by most as the “villain,” of the story.

Great Trailer. I have been an Elvis fan since 1956 and this film will greatly enhance Elvis' legacy. Elvis was truly 'sui generis'.

You should check out his 1982 Documentary Bio called "This Is Elvis." Very long & thorough, BUT all of these films focus only on R&B. That was only a fraction of his music catalog. Even from the beginning, he sang Country, Bluegrass, Ballads & Gospel, yet it gets no attention because the controversy (his covering R&B) is the part that got media attention, but just know that Elvis cannot be constrained to one genre. fact, he is the only artist in history to chart on Billboard for so many different genres, often outdoing experts in those genres. Granted, when he outdid his R&B contemporaries in the 50's, it is now called theft, but you cannot restrict someone from recording a song. Also, covering a song means, recording it after the original artist (R&B, country, etc) already had their own hit with it. Sammy Davis, MJackson, Tina Turner etc all covered songs too, but no one complains.

Great performers like Elvis & Hank Williams learned much about singing/music from Black Churches/Folks. I once heard that when Elvis was young he got caught trying to sneak into a concert featuring the Stamp Quartett. Later JD Sumner & the Stamps were singing with Elvis.

Great stuff, Asia. There's a pretty tight documentary series about him on Netflix, I believe. You might wanna check that out before the movie. Lots of good clips and interviews. There's also a lot of info on how the Colonel manipulated him and actually held him back in many respects, keeping Elvis from touring overseas because the Colonel didn't have a passport.

The young man who played Elvis in this movie became Elvis and was fabulous. By the end I was weeping at all Elvis went through in his life. He became a puppet on his managers string which was heartbreaking to me. Not only did they get him on prescription drugs at a young age, but he was manipulated for twenty years, disappointment after disappointment. He was so wonderful and kind and it was all so sad! His light will always shine.

Elvis was born in what they call a “ shot gun shack” He was a twin. Though every article says “identical twin” I did find where his father said the two babies did not look alike. His brother was stillborn. This made his mother extremely attached and protective. He grew up in the poor part of town around the black church. His father said that at times they only had cornbread and water. So basically, he absorb the music he heard growing up in those poor areas- it does get to me when people label that as his reason for success- I heard a lot of music, too. But I’m not rich and famous. And Elvis wasn’t the only white person to grow up in poverty. He had an outstanding voice, an amazing stage presence, and a humbleness to the way he treated others because he never forgot where he came from. And he just loved music. Any music. And he loved to sing. You won’t see another like him again

Baz did this as part of his research for this movie. so i think it is going to be one heck of a movie.

Elvis was raised by his parents in the Assembly of God church (and back then they really moved to the music just like black churches did). He also went to black churches on his own, even joining the choir in a black church and learning his first guitar chords from the black pastor. Elvis also was raised on country music, listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio with his parents. He had other musical influences and he fused all of them together to create his own style. When his family moved to Memphis, he hung out and went to nightclubs to listen to black blues singers. He also bought his clothes where they did, and stuck out like a sore thumb in high school because of the way he dressed and how he wore his hair. From what I've seen and heard so far, this movie focuses on the influence of black gospel and blues music, but his musical influences also included country, crooners, and rockabilly. That's why Elvis could sing all those genres and is in five major Halls of Fame: Rock & Roll, Blues, Gospel, Country and Rockabilly.

It was both, his parents sang in his church choir (Assemblies of God I think it was) and in Tupelo, MS, he went with friends from the Black community and went to their churches as well. In Memphis, he went to a local Black Church (Baptist) which is documented in the video of Elvis and the Black community (Rev. Brewster is the one in the video, who might be who the Reverend in the movie is based on). There is also a video of Elvis himself stating his 3 most influential musical genres were Country (with Blue Grass included in that), Gospel (from both the white and black Gospel traditions) and Blues. To me his genius was that he could sing all of those genres to the standard and at the same time fuse them all together. None of the other Rock and Roll Greats could do all those genres to the standard. Elvis is in the Country, Gospel, R&B, Rock a Billy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fames. The first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will indicate how the culture of the South, both white and black and church music influenced the those who pioneered Music. All of them were from the South, or border states contingent to the South. Elvis and Same Cooke were from Mississippi, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis were from Louisiana, Buddy Holly was from Texas, James Brown from South Carolina, Little Richard and Ray Charles were from Georgia, Everly Brothers from Kentucky but were influenced when they were in TENN and Nashville sound and Church Berry from Missouri.

Elvis attended a black Pentecost church but he got most of his style from the black artist form the time.

From what I have seen of the trailer (saw it several times) it would be an interesting movie. A lot of license was allowed. For instance, I don't think Elvis was sneaking around black churches in Tupelo as a child. He was almost 14 when he and his family moved to Memphis. He and his parents didn't attend church for years. Then in Jan. of 1954 he attended (did not become a member) of The First Assembly Of God Church. He only went once in a while. He and some other young folks hung in the back and then at the start of the sermon they would sneak out and go to the East Trigg Church nearby to hear Pastor Brewster preach and join in the music, which drew them in the first place. Then off they would go back to the Assembly of God church as the service was winding down. His manager, Tom Parker, was from the Netherlands and yet pretended to be from West Virginia. The accent Hanks puts on is all wrong. Parker did sound like he came from West Virginia. Sometimes he sounded like Elmer Fudd.

Unchained melody means so much to me. I know it's from righteous brothers, but Elvis version is better imo Also want to say that this is mine and my "friends" (meant to be together) song, but she passed away, so it breaks my heart everytime I hear this.

They wouldn't show him below the waist for long time because of his wiggle. It was to explicit they thought. I believe it was Ed Sullivan was first television show he was on. I think he said that his wiggle was to much.

Watch ‘If I Can Dream’ they are portraying it the movie because it’s relevant to what happened in the 60s….he sang that one time and only one time only because of the assistinion of Martin Luther King and Bobby King. He sang it once and never again, the preview touched on how it made him….this has nothing to do with us and he said ‘This has everything to do with us’ that’s exactly how Elvis felt. This movie is going to showcase the ‘Real’ side of Elvis which includes the drug use. I cry every time I watch this but know it will showcase Elvis in a way that many didn’t know and also for the younger generation. Elvis was and always will be an icon that surpasses the entertainer, he is immortal.
