Can the iPad Pro replace a laptop for Music production in 2021? In this video I discuss some of my thoughts about why I use the iPad for music production and why I still use both to make music.
There is no way I could complete all of MY reasons why iPad could replace a laptop in one video. So I may be doing a part 2 or maybe even a series/ playlist.
Let’s continue the conversations in the comment section.

There's a lot of great music apps that have really come along way since the iPad first came out. I used one in live situations with my bands, sampling live, MIDI'ing and even using it as a touch screen instrument. I never worry too much about whether a tablet can replace a computer or what not, I try to look at it in terms of having a couple of different creative flows where my mood dictates how I create. Music production has really opened up towards producers on the go and it's nice to see companies and app developers embrace that marketplace. It's nice to not have to be tethered to a home studio anymore and be free to make music wherever I feel. I never saw an issue using an iPad or iPhone as a problem. These machines have more processing power than what NASA had on the first moon landing. I bet if you did a blind listening test to random folks, they wouldn't know if it was done on a phone, tablet, or computer.

I’m new to your channel, i love making music on my ipad, i been doing it for years and discovered it’s great, you just have to use your mind and creativity. I have many DAW . I made some great songs using GarageBand and very proud of it. I expanded my use to exporting out of my IPAD to my zoom live recorder mix. Then build for there. IPAD forever.

Is the song good? Does it sound good? Then you can record and produce music on the iPad….. I have the iPad Pro 2020 using Cubasis 3. I record a lot on the iPad and then fly the tracks to Cubase 11 Pro to add more and do more editing……. The Beatles had four tracks……. We have the iPad that can do so much more…..

The 2 BIG features I’m waiting for on iPads: 1) The ability to connect and manage multiple input and output sources, including multiple USB sources, all while in the iOS platform. 2) Porting OS X to the iPad and let the users choose whether they want to run in iOS mode or OS X mode. That would open the door for Logic Pro on the iPad, at least in OS X mode.

There's a place in the world for both. I find Logic Pro X much faster and smoother and let's face it, bug free to use but the challenges and variety of all the different apps interacting with each other on the iPad is so much fun. I don't make music to make money. I make music to have fun

Some of the best underground music was made on Amaiga 500s and Atari computer. Anyone who talks rubbish about using an iPad don’t have a clue about music production. It’s the music that matters. Check REQ 2 album.

I think it can replace the Mac if you know how to use it. The way people make music today is not like it use to be. Technology has advanced so much that I can make a good song on my IPhone. The mixing, mastering and all this production is right in our hands.

I’m just finding this because I got an iPad Pro to do art and music. I did find it a little complicated planning out getting the good stuff and researching so I can cut down on wasted time by going to what the artists are currently using and I did find it confusing. I’ve always used PC and for some reason I expected that I could just pay full price for a DAW and then get the plug-ins through the daw or third party and then open them inside the daw and pull up the daw step sequencer and a selection of drums and keys and all of that. I know now not to expect that same functionality. I like that you made that a topic here because you can do most of that, but it’s a different workflow shown through different tabs and windows then you consolidate the various pieces and then route them to a “real” DAW. But hey really though having the convenience to not be tied to my desk to get ideas down or carry around a bulky laptop is worth all the money. Just taking a laptop out of a bag, opening it, logging in, charging, initializing programs is a lot when you’re already out and about, but now I could be on a plane and discreetly make my beats on a 4 hour flight and never have to struggle to find a place for my laptop to sit and be hitting keys. EVEN if I can’t make and mix a project to full completion I don’t care because my first draft of music is always plain sounds anyways. I can get my ideas down and get everything structurally in order and arranged then export to my DAW then change up instruments, tones and mix in there. It really does seem like it’s going to supercharge my creative output, but like you and as a new consumer of IPad for music purposes I do wish it was all ready to go: I could go buy an iPad Pro, go home, purchase a daw like Logic or ProTools and be done. Simultaneously, I do understand why it hasn’t happened yet. IOS, and I used to hate saying this, does make superior products and will easily become the new standard in terms of its interface. One thing I wish they would stop doing though is making all of their ancillary products so hyper-specific to a certain device. For example if you have the first generation Apple Pencil it has no functionality with any of the new devices. It’s completely obsolete and if that kind of thing creeps into the IOS and music production industry relationship then that would be a net negative thing to happen. Imagine if every time a new gen was released all your older IOS specific equipment became obsolete. That’s my only complaint with IOS, but I’m looking forward to new workflows and engaging in the ideas you presented here. Thanks dude

When my Windows PC broke I did not feel like spending the hours installing the many VSTs It takes hours. I bought an iPad Air at the end of 2014 and I learned to create music and art with it. It was very tedious but fun more fun than a laptop that's why I never really looked back.. I have heard of guys exporting mp3 straight from their MPC live so why not an IPAD. You do not need a laptop anymore though there are some apps that I wish were for IOS but sadly are not. Good video peace

Dang bro, this video is 100% on point, and the timing of me finding it is downright uncanny. I want to comment on every single thing you said, but I’ll keep it in check and just hit on the big points. I have around 4-5 iPads and sometime around 2017 (I think) I bought an iPad Pro 12.9” 128GB specifically to run StudioMux because I wanted to use it wirelessly as a control surface for Ableton Live on my Windows PC. This worked fine for a year or two, but I’ve since replaced it with an actual 24 channel analog mixer. But after having my iPad Pro for only a short time I recognized the fact that there are a buttload of music producing apps available for a fraction of what VSTs cost for my PC. Probably like everyone else, I went an extended spending spree buying music apps of all kinds, synths, drum machines, beatboxes, guitar effects, sequencers, and the list goes on and on. I fully incorporated the iPad into my workflow, but not as a DAW, but more like an external VST machine, if you will. With some creative I/O routing I found that I could use the apps on my iPad just like I use VSTs on my PC. I used this system extensively for the numerous synth tracks on my most recent album. Somewhere along the line, and I’m thinking maybe over a year ago, I bought Beatmaker 3. After I initially installed it on my iPad, I took a cursory look at it and put it aside because the learning curve appeared to be a little more steep than I wanted to deal with at that particular time. Skip ahead to about 2 weeks ago. I randomly found some dude on KZfaq making some really cool beats with Beatmaker 3 and I had actually forgotten that I had bought it a long time ago. It just so happened that I had to leave on a trip and I’d be away from my studio for 2 weeks. I decided to write a entire track using Beatmaker 3 and I did just that. I just finished mixing it yesterday and I’ll take it back to my studio tomorrow and make some final tweaks then master it. Beatmaker 3 is dope and there no getting around it. I haven’t actually imported samples into it yet, but the one thing that made it a game changer for me is the ability to record plugins already installed on my iPad. I can literally record any synth or any other instrument on my iPad and edit the wave form right in Beatmaker 3. It’s a full featured DAW that can use most of my other apps and I can compose and arrange anywhere. So that’s the short version of my story. If you’re a music producer and haven’t embraced and incorporated iOS into your production workflow, well… that’s on you. I have subscribed to your channel and I’ll look forward to seeing more. Thanks!

Integrating the Mac as just another module, then dumping Kontakt etc made audio sounds into Koala with other Auv3 apps to sequence out, bounce stems and master .. maybe back into Logic or AEM .. Okay this is deep. You’ve popped up on my recommendation list at just the right time! I have MBP M1 13“ and love it, but after buying an iPad Mini 6 I’m kinda sold on it. It’s smaller, it’s basically the same spec, and like you said they can work together. You just reminded me to download Koala onto this iPad, then I’ll have Koala, Digitalism 2000 and BM2 on phone and iPad, meaning I could have three studio setups around the house to destroy my neighbourhood and make all the birds fly away! IDAM I have only just heard, and knew nothing about it. Thank you for that bomb! With MacOS Monterey the iPad interacts with the MBP wirelessly now! My entire setup is wireless, and the iPad Mini has taken that further. If someone asked for a budget studio setup I would give them this iPad, a set of JBL headphones and JBL soundbar 🎧🔊

@@BrandonRico I especially like the way it can archive a complete session at the end and send it wherever you want to store it, all within iOS user-interface terms, language, icons and working methods. To me, it’s a ‘true’ iOS DAW. It lets me choose where they go, and that’s where it puts them. There’s none of the ‘where did my files go?’ feeling that I get with some other apps, LOL! But I should point that I don’t create music within iOS. I record music and sounds into a field recorder, then do all the mixing, editing and mastering within iOS. So my workflow is ultimately record, transfer to iOS, process, out to the world. So getting wavs into and out of my DAW is very important. Cubasis kicks butt in that area, to my mind at least.

I don’t see the point of Logic on the iPad 😤 I could be wrong, but it’s not a direction that makes sense for Apple. Logic is not designed for a touch screen, but Logic Remote and GarageBand IS! Continued enhancements to GarageBand is more likely. The iPad is the ideal “ideas” device. Compose, create, sample, beats, record parts in new interesting ways that leverage iOS devices but Logic is both a creative and studio production for not just musicians and producers but also for engineers. Think about the eco-system of software bundles, VSTs and plugins for MacOS and Windows - it’s huge and generates big $$$. It makes more sense for those vendors to sell differently designed produces for iPad. In that way, they can sell you both - supporting the mobile music production community on iOS while still selling you software for your laptop or standalone PC in the studio. It’s a more strategic and revenue generating business decision. That’s why I just don’t see Apple re-developing Logic for iOS (aside from being a huge software re-development effort to make Logic touch screen based).

Love to migrate to a 2tb Ipad pro but apple just kills us with storage costs. I'm probably leaning more towards using the ipad as a robust sketchbook which can template my ideas over to my flagship mac mini daw setup. you mentioned airdrop and dropbox, what's the most seamless way? Are you having to airdrop all your stems individually or can you just sketch in garageband on IOS and import into your logic flagship?

I don’t think so. I mean, there are different ways to produce music. If you make long term music, a mobile device couldn’t stand it. I’m experiencing this ussue right now: I use my ipad 6th generation from 2017, it works fine but after two hours working I have to charge it again (because of low battery). I use it intensively for everything (work, music, zoom meetings, etc.). So, after almost four years of having it, I think I need either a laptop or another ipad to divide tasks.

Ahh ok. Interesting perspective. If we’re talking long term I could see how that could turn problematic on a devices battery life. However I still use my 2017 iPad Pro a lot for music production today. Probably not as heavily as my current updated iPad but I use it as a peripheral to my MacBook as well as mocking up ideas while lounging around the house. 2017 device still holding up nice for me. But I do agree. The division of tasks across devices could definitely help

Appreciate the video! I’ve been inspired by people like Damon Albarn’s iPad album The Fall - Gorillaz in the past but never had the time or money to sink into getting into making music, especially on a tablet. I saw you mentioned getting the largest size you can afford. My question is would I be able to get by with a lower storage size iPad and using an external drive if needed?

I think so. For SOME things but it’s always better to have the onboard storage in my opinion. I would even recommend going with an older model and larger storage if budget is an issue

Just waiting for the day Apple releases MainStage and Logic to come to M1 iPads. The software keyboard can be used to write a paper or play any piano on GarageBand., the pencil can be used to make album 💿 art covers, and GarageBand has so many features now it's insane. And I believe Apple wants users to use iPad Pro or M1 iPad as their main computer because they always say it's your next computer. Not right now but soon it will be. And I am in school and I think Apple would help so many students by making RAM more better than just having all the apps you ever there and not closed so that you can make sure the apps that are open like on a Mac 💻 are being used for the memory. Safari has to be prioritized and users must be able to close all other apps so that when students want to finish an assignment they can't afford the app to close on us if our assignments are timed. I feel like using any computer is so limited now because it does not have a touch screen and I can't use any piano synthesizer for music 🔊. it's so close now. Apple just needs to keep going with making the iPad M1 chips greater and greater.

And by the way, I'm also curious - if you use an audio interface with 32 bit float, can the iPad record and process that sound? I've heard about the bitrate limitation, but I guess this technology will soon begin to be actively adopted, like RAW-photo and RAW-video.

Help me out man, I don't have a experience and knowledge, but I do have a dream. For me as well music on the go is important thing, so I though that it could be cool to have professional microphone on the clips next to me for beatbox and vocals, genki wave ring for a possibility of adding effects such a delay and other on the go (still figuring this out (I mean a music studio what programme should I use? - help!) and for a looper hotkey also (I have two rings). A guitar on the back, and basically that it. The question is is genki wave compatible with other platforms for creating music than recommended? Cause they recommend a software for a apple or windows 10. So I don't know if it would be good with Ipad, help me guys. Edit: With blutooth speaker ofcourse in pocket or backpack.

Hello. Can you tell me which DAWs are currently available on the iPad? Apart from Cubasis. I'm thinking of switching to iPad from Windows, there are many professional-level apps for photo retouching and video editing, but the situation with DAWs, as I understand it, is worse now... It's strange that Ableton or Presonus won't make full-fledged versions of their DAW for iPad (and, incidentally, for Android tablets) as, for example, Serif transferred professional versions of their programs (Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher) to iPadOS.

I need to ask, would 512GB be sufficient or would 1TB be better for an iPad Pro? This video got me going about needing more storage but that $400 jump is wild. I’m more concerned with not having limitations than the price but def don’t wanna spend more than needed
