Since the beginning, iPads revealed great potential for live performance.
After 2018, iPad Pro has also proven itself as a capable, efficient and portable device for music production, thanks to a massive improvement in processing power, storage and file managing ( we now have old style “normal” direct drag and drop, copy/paste )and more importantly, mature and powerful software that finally unveiled the potential and brought it to reality.
Using an iPad Pro M2, 16 GB, 1TB, limitations starts to fade away, giving place to a very pleasing, fast and versatile workflow.
iPadOS evolved in a way that can match heavy old operating systems, while keeping true to its original concept: lightness and efficiency. At least for my use case.
In these video I try to cover some of the main bases related to music production and live performance on an iPad, starting with the essential devices and going through the main and best software to get the job done.
Details and many subjects where left behind, otherwise this 40 minutes video could easily take 4 hours.
I would love to read your suggestions and opinions, and will be happy to answer your questions.

Hey Mr. Ferreira, welcome back hope your vacation was good! I see you mentioned that the Logic Pro organ at 10:07 is good, so at least I am on the right track with organs! We are really living in good times because I think if this was 1985 or 1996, you room would be full of rack mount modules from the floor to the ceiling, a bit like Junkie XL's studio room, but there's soooooooo many plugins on the store and they can get very overwhelming, I don't know how you are coping with all those AU's on your iPad and I'm very sure you have a laptop with more stuff on it. 😆

Thank you Tony! In 1996 I had a Korg M1, a Korg DDD1, a digital piano, and a big desktop computer running a bunch of not so legal software:). No space or money for more... I started investing in iOS, 10 years ago. It was a bold investment, because clearly hardware and software where very limited. Recently I started seeing big improvements, it was a good bet! I save every month for software and for a fund that allows me to update hardware every two or three years. And I take my time to explore it. It's a work in progress, started 10 years. Back then it was dificult to filter the good software from the toys, but eventually my filtering skills got better. If you are starting that process, expect some frustration, but I hope I can help you and others to start.

Thanks for the guided tour through you ipad production suite! My main concern in taking the ipad for live shows is how the ipad handles long and complex performance where I would, lets say, use 20 different instruments and effects from different companies during the show. 1. Does the ipad have that processing power. 2. Do you need to open each application used in a performance before using camillo? Or is it simply open camillo and play?

Thanks for watching! Hope it was helpfull. Camellot doesn't open apps, it opens AUV3, the "plugin" version of the apps. It is organized like this: Songs>Scenes>layers. You open a song and you open every AUV3 assigned to that song, even with 14 heavy scenes, it takes around 3 seconds to open it ( in a iPad Pro M2 16gb ram). Then you get the scenes screen, around 12 square buttons fit in the screen, but scrolling can fit more. When you choose a scene you have imediate access to the sounds ( AUV3 instruments and effects ), you can have how many you want, layer, split, add effects, route them, attribute midi channels, etc... My M2 with 16 Gb handles all of this easily. My Pro 2018, struggles a little with heavier projects ( with a lot of heavy instruments ), but with carefully previously tested projects, it never failed on stage or rehearsells. Not once! In hundreds of gigs and rehearsells. Only had problems with low quality cables or accessories.

Thank you! I would just run Pianoteq on a Daw, like Cubasis. You have then access to all the editing and sound processing possible. Or you can use audiobus, set pianoteq as an input, audioshare or other recording app as the output. Or just make a screen recording. you can mute iPad microphones, and just record internall sound, and video, this way you can even watch your playing on the pianoteq app keyboard.

Thank you for shining a light on what iOS has to offer in production capabilities! I was an early adopter and use many of the same apps. Neo-soul keys and Moog are some of my favorites! I do have a question. Have you played around with stage manager to gain more screen real estate? I was curious about your setup as Cubasis 3 is pretty straight forward, but a larger screen is nice to have when you’re editing tracks. I’m with ya on the fact that there isn’t a great drum app yet. I’ve spent the time playing with virtual drums from different apps, but it never sounds right and the process is more “programming”, than performance. I prefer to track live drums, as it always sounds correct to my ears. Maybe AI can help us out soon!😅 Do you have any suggestions for authentic sounding horns? I don’t feel that I capture the “breath and feel” of live horns. (I grew up listening to my father play the sax for years and I know the sound that I’m looking for). Please keep making videos to showcase what a powerful tool the iOS platform can be.

Ok - got to the end of your video. You have single handedly caused me to completely change direction regarding my gear acquisition . I’ve been looking for weeks at stage pianos and hard wear Synth/keyboards - not any more - now I’ll be purchasing an iPad and looking for a decent 61 note controller. If you have a 61 note controller recommendation I’d be happy to hear it . The key bed feel is very important to me - I don’t need thousands of knobs and pads. It has to be 61 note as I’m traveling all over the world with work and in the flight case it’s a perfect size and weight for flying .Many thanks ! 👍
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 2 ай бұрын
For travelling, sure it is the way to go. I can recomend the old trusty Roland A800Pro, or MAudio keystation. All are semiweighted, the Roland has the best feeling keyboard ever, for a semi-weighted keyboard. The MAudio is the simple and effective solution if you don't need any knobs or sliders. It draws little power from the iPad. They are all plastic fantastic, but for the weight and size what could we expect? Not for the learning pianist, but good enough to play on the go, well suited for synth and Hammond playing. I would stay away from Akai, stiff spring feeling.

@@FaustoFerreira Many thanks for your advice - I’ve done some research on the a800 and it has great reviews all round. The only concern is that it’s been around for well over 10 years and I’m guessing some of them have had a lot of use - do you know when they were discontinued? You mentioned the Korg - which one specifically- and have you had a chance to look at the brand new Korg Keystage ? Expensive but that’s not too much of a concern if it’s a decent keyboard. Many thanks .
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 2 ай бұрын
@@haywoodjazzpiano3108 I mentioned the MAudio Keystation, not the Korg Keystage. I didn't try it, but the reviews are not great concerning the keys, too light keys. The Maudio have a good key travel and well balanced, and the velocity curve works for me. Roland is light but feels solid, tight, well built. That's such a subjective matter, you will have to try some for yourself. 88 keys are different, when you know acoustic pianos well, you can assert what is and what is not working on a digital keyboard. Still subjective, but with some objective points you can pick and compare. Synth keys is purelly a matter of taste. I bought the Roland A800Pro new, four years ago, even travelled with it, still looks and plays like new. I've alao used Maudio in the past, studio and onstage and they lasted years without any failure. Simple, and tougher then they look.

Thank you! Latency is not an issue. For me, anything above 5ms is allready unbearable. Yes, I did sync audios/video manually, because I record everything individually, and for editing purpuses, but I can assure that latency is not a problem. That's why I started with iOS, and not android. 10 years ago Android was impossible to use for me. Don't know about how it works today, but iOS was since the beginning performing extremelly well.

This is a fantastic guide to iOS audio by somebody who seems to know more about iOS sound production and its history than most reviewers on KZfaq - thanks so much! I do have one question: In this and your other videos, you note that you use Camelot as an audio unit host for live performance. I am a piano and keyboard performer myself, who prefers Studiologic keyboards (they’re great!) but I’ve always used AUM. I see that you HAVE AUM, but you did not talk about it. How does it stack up against Camelot? I guess Camelot works better for you? When I saw that you use Camelot, I thought maybe I should switch, but I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for all the great reviews - they’re very helpful and interesting!
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
Thank you very much! Glad I could help. It's true, I forgot about AUM :( It was not on purpose, but I have an explanation for that: I never really explored it that much. Both made sense when they were created, before InterApp audio and later AUV3. It was the only way to connect, mix, manage your music Apps that otherwise would be isolated in their own universe. Altough both could serve multiple purposes, simplistically put, AudioBus was allways better connecting apps, and AUM better as a mixer. But the biggest advantage of AudioBus was the abbility to save and recall all the Apps and all the parameters saved. It just worked for me.But it was not perfect, loading a setup would allways take a few button presses and the usual time for the Apps to load. With Camelot, when you load a setup ( called song ), you load immediatelly all the Audio Units you need. Then, you have the Scenes page, you get 12 big named rectangles in one page. With a single press on either of them, you activate immediatelly that scene, with as much instrument layers you want, splits, effects, controller routings, audio routtings, etcc.. all these power at a touch of a button, with instant recall ( because they are allready open ) ideal for live playing. Summing up: Audiobus and AUM, relevant before AUV3, as the only way of connecting music Apps. Now Camelot Pro is a AUV3 host for live gigs. Don't forget also about KeyStage, it is the same concept, with a slightly different arquitecture. You might like it more, both are great, solid and reliable peaces of software. Camelot: complex, powerfull. Keystage: simpler to use, less versatile, but might fit tour needs better. Both are solid performers.

Thank you for watching! I would say there are three essential expansions: Synthogy Ivory Mobile Grand, 70's Earthy EP and Korg Module Performance Expansion ( for split/layer/midi learn capabilities and some extra usefull sounds ). Organ & clav Collection is also usefull, clavs are very good, but organs you can get much better in the cheap VB3m. Maybe London Synphonic Orquestra also. The Mellow Tape Keyboard is also excelent and very usefull. I have all 36 expansions. Although you have limited but usefull editing capabilities, and you can find better in every cathegory using other dedicated apps, this is still the best collection of high qualitty sounds and functionalities in one app, for when simplicity and fast on the go versatility is required, like in some gigs or rehearsells where you didn't have the chance to prepare your complex setup in Camelot. Before Camelot, I sometimes used it exclusively on big stages, never disapointing in terms of sound, versatility, stability, reliability and fast operation, all in one simple to use app. Camelot + a good set of high quality dedicated apps is indeed better and more powerfull, but more prone to user error, due to its complexity. Just use a diferent audio interface, or a different controller and you have to set them up again, just to give you an example. Everything you do gets recorded automatically, and will start up like that the next time. Camelot is Powerfull but risky if you are not an expert on it. Korg Module is practically risk free.

Prepare yourself very well at home and on low responsability rehearsells before going on stage. Great video! What is your suggestion for vocal overlay (singing) incl monitoring in headphones? I’m using a Yamaha B3 acoustic piano with Bluetooth midi output (silence function). How do you easy mix that on iPad setup?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
Thanks! You can start by using standard cables for Midi ( either USB or Midi Din ), more reliable and less latency. Use a combined audio/midi interface or a hub to connect via usb to the controller and to the audio interface, with PD, this way you will allways charge the iPad. Use Camelot, create a scene with your favourite piano ( mine is Pianoteq ) and an audio in/out enabled for the interface. Open a Reverb effect ( I like ERS250 ) between the in-out audio path. Use a dynamic mic like Sure sm58 for singing live through the monitors ( better for avoiding feedback ) or a condenser mic like Rode NT1 or better for use with headphones ( you get more sensitivity and overall quality ). Or use a daw, ( I use Cubasis 3 ) the same thing, but use one midi track for the piano and a mono audio track for the voice, with the ERS as a send effect. Enable Monitoring ( the speaker sign ) to get the reverb out. Use the lowest latency possible ( less bufer size possible ) in audio setup. For monitors, you cannot go wrong with Yamaha HS line ( the size depends on the size of your space and the distance from the speakers ). For headphones, you cannot go wrong with Audiotechnica, even the least expensive are quite acceptable. Use good quality cables, not only for audio. Usb cables are often neglected, but their specs and quality are super important. Never had a fail from the iPad side: bad cables where allways the culprit for failure.

@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
@erikolsson5931 Unfortunatelly, some controllers don't reach the 127 peak. Try changing the Yamaha's own velocity curve. Try also editing the response from the App itself. If still not working, install MIDI Tools from Victor Porof, and use MIDI Curve to sculp it further.

Hello Fausto, amazing video, very helpfull. I have a short question. I have a iPad Pro , a hub,a midikeyboard, a focusrite Scarlett 2i2, a bobpad and a microphone. Is it possible to use during a live performance for example a nice epiano sound on the keyboard and a percussive sound on the bobpad and a vocoder on my voice all at the same time? What do I need to make it possible?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
Thank you! You can connect everything to your hub. It should be a PD Hub, with enough ports ( 3 USB plus the PD port ). You can do it in Camelot, creating a scene with a layer of your electric piano, another layer with your drums, and assigning for each layer the designated controller. Create another layer for the vocoder and assign the ins and outs from the Scarlet. For the other instruments you just need to assign audio out through the Scarlet. And that's it. You might need some time to get confortable with Camelot, but that's worth it!

Thank you I’m going to buy Camelot and choose a nice epiano app. I’m looking for a vocal harmonizer app or plug-in to use in this live setting. Like for example Waves harmony . Will this work with Camelot on stage?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
@@user-sf8ph5jk3u It will work. Just be prepared to take some time setting everything up. The good thing is that once it's working it will allways work without hickups. Except if you change controller or audio interface. If you do, you have to reconfigure them on the respective layers.

Thank you. I just asked Waves harmony and they say they are not iPad compatible. So I have to find another vocal harmonizer that does?

Fausto obrigado pelo vídeo! Para voz e violão, controlando os efeitos pelo pedal, o que você sugeriria? Daria pra acionar os efeitos no Cubasis pelo pedal?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын

@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
@@carlodeluca Depende.

Great content again Fausto...i have a question about the studio monitor....do you also have the subwoofer ? Or is it good enough with only the 2 monitors?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 6 ай бұрын
Thank you! The HS8 handles it very well, on their own, specifically on a tight spot, like many home studios are. The sub would be overkill here. The smaller ones would definitelly need a subwoofer, in almost every case.

HS7 are very good, in a way, they are even better balanced in a small space. Depending on your needs, they might work really well.

What mic do you recommend for recording vocals
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 6 ай бұрын
That's very difficult to recomend, we have such a wide price/ characteristics range, and that's not my speciality. I'm just glad that there are such good budget products that works great for me, like the Rode NT1. And for live usage I allways trust the classic Sure SM58, or SM 57 for an extra sparkle or to record a guitar amp, drum snare, etc...Those are the best budget/trusty mics since I remember, and can definitelly recommend. If you want to step up, prepare to spend much more money, and try to get further advice from a dedicated studio guy or YT channel.

Ipad Pro M2, 16 Gb Ram, 1Tera storage. Also working with iPad Pro 2018, with 1T and 6Gb of Ram, still holds pretty well, it was a big revolution that openned the way to M1 chips.

@@FaustoFerreiraI don't ever plan on playing music at a church, is the Sunday Keys App really better? I am doing covers of japanese modern pop/indie songs with my band and might need all kind of sounds including various synths and electronic sounds. I'm a total beginner with almost zero knowledge regarding the software side of music, but I'm willing to learn and try things out. planning on getting the korg d1 so I can use it to perform live with an ipad. do you think a 256GB or 512GB used M1 ipad pro will be enough? the 1TB one is out of my budget right now. I would also like to do music production eventually but perhaps that can wait, since my budget is limited and I'm due for a performance this november. Also, if I use two keyboards and plan to use separate foot pedal/foot switch on both of them to change sounds/preset on the fly during songs, can I configure them individually with the ipad? I feel like there's quite a learning curve but I want to try learning how to do everything before I get the ipad this october (unfortunately I'm a broke college student living with a part-time salary, so the ipad and korg d1 will need to wait until october)
