@@darsure3006 Basically, Lex usually bends the letter of the law to his will. He virtually never has the police after him by virtue of playing in all the gray areas, with only a handful of his most over-the-top schemes being out and out illegal. He's a public figure, with a giant corporation, he can't just go around and do whatever, he'd be arrested and have his assets seized. Lex is usually one step ahead of the law in all his endeavours, or if he can't be, he applies lobbying and bribery to skirt past. He's kind of all to real in terms of a morally bankrupt billionaire, using wealth to operate outside of the laws that govern typical individuals with technicalities, loopholes and 'friends' in high places.

I both agree and disagree with Trump's ban of these apps, i agree that they are far overreaching data collection tools but i disagree with targeting them specifically as he should have went after all apps that are similar. By pushing for better privacy/consumer laws that place the power over their data in the hands of the consumers it would effectively eliminate these apps from the market. That is the problem, in reality we need much better privacy laws, They are getting better but they simply do not go far enough. Ideally any company that collects data should inform you what data they collect, make that data available to you and tell you your data was sold to. By default any data collection that could be used to identify any specific user (ie. You) should be opt-out by default. For example many Mobile Apps do a terrible job "anonymize their data" prior to sale but they still leave your cell carrier device information, many US based carriers routinely sell that information. I think we need better informed consent as it relates to data collection and sale. It is one thing if you know that an app is going to sell specific bits of information it is different when you have no idea what an app is collecting and what they are going to sell. He glossed over the FitBit being banned by military personnel because foreign governments and terrorist groups where using it to identify DoD/Military personally and their families (including children) by buying the data packages and cross referencing that information with other sources. Ideally they should never be allowed to sell GPS locations that has not been sanitized without specific permission from the user. Sanitizing this data makes it practically worthless as it brakes up the owner, track and time information, essentially you would have Lat-Lon-ALT (LLA) with no relation information not even time. People really do not understand how valuable GPS data is in terms of privacy.

@@Iosifavich He didn't take the time to dive into the FitBit details... but I wouldn't say it was glossed over, he stated it pretty clearly. I think you're right that we need better consumer privacy laws, but I think your approach to them is still too weak. Good starting suggestions though.

How about instead of only caring when it benefits a foreign government, we stop letting companies collect so much data in general? Maybe this is a crazy idea, but I don't think it should be standard that every single mobile app and operating system contains extensive tracking for your location and other activities.

There are a lot of very, very good reasons to prioritize data collection by a Chinese "company." If the NSA had outright control of Facebook, would you still use it? If the NSA was also involved in organ harvesting and genocide, would you use it then?

Drives me insane when I go to install a game and it wants my contact list, permission to download all my pictures, gps tracking, wifi logging, ability to control my internet connection, permission to place calls, and a host of other things. I just want a game to fill a few minutes here or there... why does it need to place a call the moment my phone switches to a roaming network, and then turn on my internet to download my pictures over roaming data?1 (Rhetorical) Yeah, if I go to install something on my phone and it requires any permissions to work... I refuse and either cancel the install or uninstall it - depending on when it tells me about the requirements.

It's all sleight of hand, it's a distraction. Trump makes such a big deal of this and then shortly afterwards announces if he gets re-elected he plans to defund social security and medicare. We're all focused on a pointless app going away when we should be worried about bigger things.

This feels like a situation where the phrase "no matter who wins, we lose" fits very, _very_ well. Funny thing is Trump never said HE should get a cut. He said America should get a cut. As in a portion of that sale should be converted into tax revenue. Americans have no problem talking to people from across the globe, we typically just don't care to sadly. There's a nigh infinite amount of chat services and forums you can go on to talk to foreigners. WeChat plays by the rules of the CCP and the U.S. government is suspicious of that

He is an American, but because of China's censorship, the only way he could contact us was through WeChat. He was not the only American in China. There are people there for corporate business, embassies, travel, and education. By banning WeChat, Trump is effectively ending communication between Americans living, working, and traveling in China and their families back home. This is communication stranding

Yes, Trump only ever acts in his personal interest, but these things aren't mutually exclusive. He is fully capable of acting in the national interest, if he personally gets something out of it. TikTok's agenda and the purpose of its algorithms/ censorship is to influence people's opinion of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) into indifference or somewhat favorable, from outrage as it should be. If enough "people on the ground" think well of China, their governments will be less likely to take action against China when it actually deserves to be punished for (frequently) violating international agreements. Corporate media isn't doing itself any favors either, with all the kissing up to the CCP and not giving enough coverage to the horrible shit the CCP gets away with. The USA has done its fair of shitty things, but in today's age, at least you don't have arbitrary arrests of pro-democracy human rights lawyers (what happened in Portland is child's play, compared to what China does on a regular basis), mass-scale organ harvesting of prisoners who were arbitrarily arrested in the first place, and compulsory sterilization to wipe out entire ethnic groups like what they're currently doing to Uighyur women. Also, keep in mind that in China's legal framework, all Chinese corporations are required to pledge allegiance to the Chinese Communist party and party interests. TikTok's international branch is not required to answer to the CCP, but it must report everything to TenCent. And TenCent is a Chinese corporation. So de facto, TikTok is inseparable from the Chinese Communist Party. Trump's primary focus should be on getting COVID19 under control. However, that's an issue that would involve a complex, multi-pronged, well-coordinated government effort over an extended period of time. On the other hand, banning TikTok would be a simple win. (Not to mention, China banned pretty much all of the US's major apps including Google, KZfaq, Facebook, etc. and has forced its citizens to use the CCP-approved alternatives. I fail to see what would be wrong with banning TikTok, which is personally beholden to the CCP, in retaliation?)

@@anonymoushumanpossibly2962 So your ultimate point is "they do it too so why shouldn't we?" I would like to think that you get the irony of that and how ridiculous it sounds. I'm not even 100% against this ban, just the precedent it sets. Every social media platform and every website you visit tracks and sells your information. One way or another a lot of that will probably end up somewhere in China, who's to say Facebook wouldn't be next...or any other big name app or site?

@@hairypancake ya, the amount of people that are ok with banning something based on something that may or may not be true (Tiktok having to comply with CCP data collection laws on data that is stored on US soil) is honestly quite disturbing. By this same leap of logic of "It's bad because it's Chinese", a lot of other things should be banned in America that aren't (like all of Trump's merchandise for instance). People should never be ok with things being censored without concrete evidence of their being a dire need to do so.

I've also noticed a lot of police brutality and overreach videos, including those of federal agents, are being shared on Tik Tok and then to other platforms like Reddit. I think that may have played a role.

@@craigh5236 I absolutely agree that the WH is breaking the law, a lot. But they're mostly getting ruled against in courts, except of course for the crimes committed by the president himself, since courts have no authority over that.
