Thanks for your excellent and informative comparisons! For metal they are right on. However, some of us would love to also hear how the amps and pedals "clean up" as you come out of extreme overdrive by playing softer. This is where tube amps tend to win big over pedals in my experience. There is a large universe of tone between clean and clipped.

I think I'm just mirroring many previous comments -- but for starters, that Orange sounded incredible! And I've never seen that LTD guitar...super great looking guitar! As for sounds, like others have stated, that Engl sounded very close to the original amps distortion. So great, and my favorite in this set up. I own the regular sized BE-OD pedal and it's been my heavy distortion pedal of choice for quite a while now, but in this test it seemed a bit lifeless compared to the amp and other pedals. That Cold Lands was awesome -- quite the high end sizzle...and looked like the treble was down pretty far. For me, the clear pedal winner was the Engl Powerball...but now I'm going to go research distortion pedals again after thinking I had that spot on my board nailed down!! Great video....as are all of your videos. Informative and greatly done!! Thanks!!

For me PERSONALLY, I'll just go for digital modelling route.... They'll probably sound better at replicating tube amps then any analog circuit without tubes. They WILL sound great, BUT different then tube. Not necessarily bad though. Loved the Cold Lands though. TL/DR. If you want an "tube tone" without a tube. Modelers will probably work better.

I’ve been trying to find that “perfect tube sound in My head for over 30 years and have had Mesas and Marshalls and Oranges and Fenders and Laneys and Randalls even flagship blackstar and crate tube heads and more over hybrid ie Johnson millennium, Joyo,Rocktron, and tube pedals and tube hybrid power amps all the way to tube powered speakers ….. Ugh catch My breath here, and enough ands! I have had them lost or stolen or sold. My amp now is an old gen iPad. I am also starting a pedal board rig with new digital modelers. If You listen closely to the Orange it’s has a special character, quality, even charm that outshines the pedals. Hence the sound in My head I’ve used to hold in My hands. With all the capture and whatever technology companies want to call it, You can’t find that sound any where else than a tube amp! Haters and scientists can disagree and I wish they were right. My search would be over for under 200$ Your content is the best in the class of Demos Sir!

@kutnersuicide

I'm probably biased but while each pedal sounds perfectly fine and usable, they don't seem to possess the same complexity as the amp. They are more direct or "in your face" in a way while the amp is smooth and "pillowy". I've experienced the same thing with the couple of AMT pedals I own (R1 and S2). They sound really good but they lack the complexity of a full tube amp, even using them in a tube power amp. I've identified one aspect that really is a giveaway for me. Using long sustained power chords, on a full tube amp, the sound changes constantly as the volume and gain decrease, while it stays pretty much the same on solid state and simulations stuff.
@sunlesseffects
@sunlesseffects 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Yes, that problem is quite common on preamp pedals, especially older designs and FET. Most FET preamps on the market use a specific transistor reference (J201) that clips early and well at 9v, and with that transistor you'll encounter the behavior you're describing. That's why the Cold Lands doesn't use that transistor, the one I chose clips later, and has to run at a higher voltage (35v for the cold lands) to sound good and to have a wider range of tones. AMT preamp pedals don't use J201 transistors, but they still chose one that clips well at 9v. There are preamps that use diodes and op amp and newer design tend to have multiple gain stages that work together and it will also help reduce the problem you're describing. BUT, at the end of the day, these pedals can't be full replicas, transistors (even FET) aren't tubes, they work in a very different ways. That's why the description of the Cold Lands doesn't say it's a solid state replica of a GT120, but a preamp inspired by a GT120. I prefer to think these pedals aren't made for people who are looking for the real deal, but just something compact with a tone reminicent of a well known amp, at the end, it's the player's choice. Obviously, the Cold Lands isn't the only pedal that doesn't use J201 and runs at a higher voltage, there are some more (mostly boutique pedal brands, I haven't seen many big brands doing it), on the top of my head, Dunwich designed a few circuits like that.

I realised that too when I was editing but I'm sure it has to do with the fact that I dialed them all in to sound good with the music. Keep in mind that they have range to be tweaked so that they sound different. Especially the Cold Lands and Friedman. The ENGL is more basic so it doesn't have a lot of room to be tweaked aside from the EQ. Still a great sound!
