The reason why Jeff is still around and so relevant is because he adapts to the new technology and isn't afraid to change his ways for the future. So many producers, DJs and artists get so butthurt when new things or advanaces come along and there like well what about this or that... Man we've been using turntables for like 60 years. There needs to be a new advance and I myself use turntables so I go through the same issues he states. Jeff is about the kids and the future man. Always keeping fresh and mentoring people on the come up.

No one is "butthurt" about new technology, they're sceptical. If anybody has a problem with anything, it's new technology that creates crappy deejays (who don't bother improving their skills).
@audioplugg53105 жыл бұрын
I love change and technology, but turntables will never go away because it's the foundation...the essence of Hip Hop. New technology will be created around the turntable as you just witnessed with this vid. Think about how long we've been using wheels on vehicles. It's bout to be 2019 and we're STILL using them lol.

Kind of makes me wonder what the difference between that set up and a CDJ is though.
@SteampunkBrony0105 жыл бұрын
@@robertsyrett1992, I'm pretty sure that the difference comes down to the "feel" of the record. This unit looks to be something you can add to any turntable, so you can use the turntable you've practiced on for years. It may not sound like a big deal, but a lot of people who switched to CDJs had to get used to them first. Plus, there is a big difference between using an 8.5 inch platter and a 12 inch platter, such as the difference in moving the 8 inch platter's edge an inch vs the 12 inch. Finer control is also easier on the 12 inch because of this. Also, while i'm not sure if CDJs typically have spinning platters these days, on an actual turntable you can make fine adjustments to the track syncing by lightly dragging your finger on the platter to slow down the track that's ahead slightly, allowing the other track to catch up. Yes there's usually a sync button now, but many DJs prefer to use this method as it allows them a bit more control over whats happening. Plus, syncing two tracks using the button can screw up sometimes and read the BPM and bar positioning wrong which leads to some strange sounds out of your speakers.

At a certain time in history there was probably some people telling the guy that invented the sustain pedal for the piano that it’s cheating. “If you want a long sustained note, keep your finger on the key bro”...... It’s like: The sampler = cheating........Tape and records in general = cheating (“it’s not the same as playing live bro”)............. My point: there are always people that are against new technology when it comes to music. But fortunitely there are also people that embrace and use it to innovate and create new technique’s and styles/genres/sounds.

Man, this comment - I can relate 100% with every single thing you said... I still have my 1210’s that I bought on my 18th Birthday. That was 22 years ago - thing is, apart from changing cartridges a few times and switching from Stanton’s to Ortofon, they’ve had one single service done on them about 10 years ago when I noticed the tone arm starting to skate - nothing major but it got everything re-aligned and tightened up. Just like that, it was like the day they came out of the shop. Technics are amazing - quite literally, perfect - always have been. I was in an accident a couple of years ago and was left unable to stand unassisted- so that meant the end of my DJing career. Can’t scratch sitting down - was really gutted. You’ll know exactly how I was feeling - I did get into using DVS with Traktor but now I just use an S4, 2 x F1’s and 2 x Midi-Fighters but it’s not the same. I’ve sold just about all my DJ kit now but no way could I ever sell my 1210’s - even though I don’t mix with them anymore, they’re just far too sentimental to get rid of. The memories. Always makes me smile when I glance at them and I remember a party or a club night or even just thinking back, learning to mix, with all my mates piling round to my folks house 😄 I did mess up a bit with drugs at one point - and it turned really low but to be honest, even though it was entirely the dance music scene that introduced me to pills n powder in the early nineties - I wouldn’t change it for the world. Best times of my life - I fucking love mixing

AMAZING! Thanks for making me aware of this unbelievable breakthrough! Your Boiler Room studio set is still one of my favorite DJ sets of all time, any genre. I really value & appreciate your apparent knowledge of music history, the vast depths you pull your record/samples choices from, and seeing you so psyched to embrace new technology is great to, bringing the past & future together in harmony in a really powerful way. And it’s always clear that you do it all for the love of music. I CANNOT WAIT to see what people do with this new generation of emergent technologies. Just in the last few days I’ve been learning about digital displays that play holograms you can move around & see from different angles without the need for any kind of glasses, a technology that produces “holograms” you can actually hear & touch, not through traditional holography (with light), but by using sound waves to levitate a little tiny bead, & then using a computer to program the sound waves to change the frequencies being played throughout the space so that the ball is made to move around so fast in whatever pattern we play that when we illuminate it it creates the appearance of a hologram, but one which can actually make sounds & have a tactile presence... Then I found out about synthetic biology- how there are already start-up companies in existence which are coding DNA from the ground up to invent lifeforms that never had an evolutionary lineage on the Earth... And these are just a few examples that happen to be on my mind. The regime of technologies that we’re coming up on as we advance is getting into some really crazy shit right now, & it’s only going to get crazier. Buckle up! It’s extremely exciting, but also scary (especially given the form of hierarchical class society we’re living in, where people’s access to new technologies is limited by their wealth/poverty & the majority are on the poor working-class side). They could have unimaginable benefits, & by the same token they could cause absolute catastrophe. But in the arts, in music, it is going to be AMAZING to see how we progress. There are pretty limitless possibilities opening up. We’re getting to the point where, if you have a computer, there’s virtually not a sound you couldn’t somehow make... And now it seems the question is to find novel ways of interacting with or performing whatever specific sounds we reify, make manifest, from that huge range of possible sounds.

Let's bring a bunch of DJs in and set up the turntables and play with the one peice of technology they've been waiting all their lives for. What could go wrong? 3 hours later - look, I can scratch upside down, I can scratch from across the room. Let's see what happens if I spin the record sideways. 2 hours after that - SERCURITY!!! They WON'T LEAVE!!!

I have been watching this product closely since certain dj's started experimenting with it. Here are my only issues. You can't "needle drop." But if you have your cue points set up in Serato I guess that is not a huge issue. Also the mechanism sits on top of the spindle you can't use the spindle to speed the record up while beat-matching. Although that is a sloppy way to mix, and the proper way is to use nothing but the pitch control. Other than that, this thing is awesome if you use an interface program like Serato.
@grey95145 жыл бұрын
I don't see why you can't needle drop? You can still use needles, and THRU mode on Serato/Traktor/etc. to actually use your turntables. You can't do that with CDJs. You can't do that with Rane Twelves. Or, you want to go on stage, with two turntables without any cartridges, without any vinyl, like they are doing in Phase's demo video? I don't think that is how these will be used. I see these as being used IN CONJUNCTION with traditional vinyl turntable DJs. Unless maybe you have a terrible mixer with too few inputs, so you can't route your TTs and your Phase through them simultaneously? That would be ridiculous, but I guess possible. Those aren't Phase's issues, that is you not thinking about how this adds versatility to a performance, it doesn't remove a single thing, it is additive. Mathematic set theory may be over your head, and youtube level discourse, but you can't needle drop: only if you completely remove the needle for demonstration purposes and remove through modes in DVS systems and don't know how to wire your mixer. I don't think that is an issue with Phase, I don't even think that is an issue. To not needle drop you would actually have to just have a bad setup, Phase isn't part of that equation, your lack of imagination is. I personally plan to use this with vinyl in my sets, but I have some music which is absolutely digital only and has never been released in physical form. Not every producers puts out vinyl these days at all, and control discs have lost out to CDJs primarily because most people using CDJs are just using them as controllers anyway, they're rarely loading up Serato timecodes into them, as XDJs and such have that built in. I remain dumb founded by the lack of imagination. The only possible criticism that has retained any validity in months of reading fora since the NAMM announcement is for those who like stylus tweaking and label turntablism techniques, and for those few haters I already have some theoretical solutions involving thicker slip mats or mounting sub turntable platter, but those ideas have other drawbacks and really maybe Phase 2.0 can have the controllers actually just fit the PCBs and batteries in something that is vinyl sized and shaped? Much more difficult engineering to get electronics that thin, even iPhone X models are still thicker than a 180gm piece of vinyl, so I wouldn't expect that soon, if ever.

@@grey9514 Thank you for your long-winded response. And yes, if you have needles on the tables, you can still needle drop. Also I said it's not a huge issue, because you can use cue points. Please read my entire response, instead of fixating on one thing to write your book report about.
