I've always loved howTom talks through the verses as if he's talking to a friend about his life. Doing so makes the melody-driven chorus so much more effective.

Petty makes the song just by the way he sings "then she looks me in the EEEEEEYYYYYYYEEEEEE" Such a vocal hook, such a charismatic vocal performance, it contrasts so nicely with Campbell's tight controlled guitar lines.

This is just good songwriting. The verse is frenetic - there's so much going on in the narrator's head; so much noise; but then the chorus comes in (his girl enters the picture) and everything gets smooth and nice (musically too), which lets him see the world as an OK place again. It feels timeless because that weird duality is not something that changes. Ever. "...the fight for love and glory" dontcha know.

Take a run at "Don't do me like that" from this same album. So many high points in that cut, different players stepping forward. For me. it's the drum fills in particular that stand out and really make it sound like nothing else. Strong vocal with crazy good phrasing, great Mike Campbell work, keyboards are immaculate. Just a super strong song.

"The Waiting", in my opinion, the song features the quintessential T.P. & The Heartbreakers sound. The sound of their first 5 albums. Once you get into the 6th albums, while still solid, you get other outside influences taking hold like Dave Stewart of "Eurythmics" and Jeff Lynn of E.L.O. These first 5 albums are pure. Again, in my opinion.

The more you hear of the 4 decades of his music the more you will understand that. The video of the song is well worth the watch. To me, the jangly guitar is reminiscent of and a tip of the hat to the Byrds. Campbell does the most with the fewest notes. And let's not forget Jimmy Iovine. Can't discuss this record without discussing just the pure tone/sound. Just perfect.

Doing the most with the fewest notes or words is pretty much the essence of the whole band, I think. Perfection, indeed!

Reaffirmed as my favourite Tom Petty song. Saw this tour in 1979. The vocal on this is everything.

Time to graduate to the Petty included supergroup Traveling Wilbury’s. Petty, Dylan, Jeff Lynne (ELO), Roy Orbison, and Mr. George Harrison (Fab Four). Hit it hard!!!

Spent 1979 listening to Tom Petty Damn the Torpedoes, Van Halen, Bob Seger Night Moves and Journey Evolution, man those were the days... Lyrics from these songs are part of my daily vocabulary 🤘

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers had such a unique sound. And another example of Mike Campbell playing just enough, just the right notes and riffs ... never too much, just perfect.

Another band, like Rush, who were together and making new music for 40 + years! We went through a lot of stuff together. You might want to check out Mike Campbell's band, the Dirty Knobs, too. Mike is underrated - he doesn't have to do a lot of riffs, but what he does is perfect for each song.

This was one of my favorite music videos, it really shows Perry’s magic. It’s worth a watch, we all watched it daily back it the day. 😁❤️

Absolutely. The total connection between Petty and his bandmates, which A&A were not able to see because they chose the non-video version. If they saw it, they might have given it an 'S'.

Unbelievable, the band was in the studio just messing around, and one guy played this short melody, and Tom yelled out, " I have the lyrics for this song," and history was made.!!😊 beautiful song ( my favorite). RIP TOM

From late 70’s to the mid 90’s, Petty was one of the most consistent artists of that era. Every album produced classic hits. I saw him in 1991, great concert.
